Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

First time i have seen footage of him play. Looks to have a decent kicking technique and is quite skillful with the ball as well. Has great energy for a boy that is 200cm....

The obvious is that he is quite lean. it will take a few year for him to fill out and bulk up - if his metabolism and genetics allow it of course. And that would naturally mean he would lose some of that athletic dynamism - but he has plenty to spare so no biggy. Hard to speculate on his footy brain, but he seems to be getting involved enough.

if King bro's can go top 10 then i cannot see why Mac Andrew cannot as well. If we could snare him, then the Mac Andrew LJ combination will be something that could look so difficult to match up.

I wont comment on the fairness of the "Jamarra rule'..oh stuff it ... If the AFL were serious on it, they should grandfather the whole thing for last year. The timing was so deliberately setup so that the Doggies could snare the last NGA prospect because this has been a known issue for many of years. Somebody at Doggie Land clearly has evidence that Gill had a beachfront property on Epstein's 'paradise' island.

Surely 'grandfathering' any already in the system at the time of change would be fair .... but then it isn't so it won't.

This is another evolution of the rules, initially the father son rule meant players actually by-passed the draft (Ben Cousins as an example), then they incorporated them into the national draft but at a 2nd round cost also allowing a 3rd round pick to be used if you had 2 (Matty Scarlett was a 3rd round F/S), that then changed so a club could only take the 1 F/S but at a cost of a 3rd round pick (G Ablett), then changed back so the 1st F/S was a 3rd round and 2nd one costing a 2nd round pick. The Tom Hawkins, who was the clear number 1 pick went for a 3rd rounder (bloody hell Geelong have used their sperm well!) they changed to a bidding system where a club used their next pick - we got Viney for pick 26 but a bid came at pick 7. After that they changed to a points index system where there's discounts for F/S.

So the change to the NGA system after the Dogs got lucky is no surprise, these things have been fluid.

But, lets be honest, Mac Andrew was not rated by anyone as remotely close to a top 50 pick even a year ago, he's done very well to come along like he has, and if we miss out, we miss out. Just a shame it's happening the first year the rules have been changed that way.

Great to see the bulldogs benefit from an academy player while we get shafted the very next year. It’s like the word “fair” is a swear word at the AFL.

The title of the thread has been changed back to The Mac Andrew Thread because it’s only fitting that he should get the recognition he deserves.

There have been differing views as to how he measures up in the draft scheme of things, much of it based on how he performed in the Under 19 challenge match between Vic Metro and Vic Country earlier this month. Here’s vision from the game now released by the AFL:-

Time to lawyer up and put pressure on the AFL for the obvious discriminatory practices.
As i recall we lost out this year as well as they took part of the NT zone off us and gave it to another team (goldcoast?). this is not an even competition if and others keep getting screwed over while they dance around the rules and change them to suit other clubs.

i think my explanation was a little backward..rather than grandfathering the rule, think the grandfathering should be to allow for those already in the system. So no new NGA prospects this year under the old rule. Still gives us fair and access to Mac Andrew whilst gradually a fairer implementation of the rule.

Otherwise we should get some form of point compensation given the time we have invested into this kid (presumably).

I think Cal Toomey is using Mac as Clickbait.  8th ranked player in the draft??  The kid has a bit of x-factor, but can’t see teams taking such a risk.  Would think there are a lot of more AFL ready kids in the pool, ones that would be lower risk.  Mac has a few tricks, but his positioning off the ball and movement between contests needs work, he will need to add about 20 kg to that frame and he will need to do more than 1 quarter of footy to make it into AN afl team.  My belief is he will ‘slide’ and may be a available for us to get a discount on- whether or not we even choose to take him is still not set in stone. We have other needs too.

Yeah this is the most logical approach, so naturally it came under no consideration.

Even if Mac Andrew is as good as Cal Twomey’s ratings indicate, I think we’re still well ahead from getting pick 3 as a result of Frawley going to Hawthorn.
Theivery.

Yes and we had a lucky win in a game a few years ago.

What has Frawley’s pick of years ago got to do with getting Mac Andrew?

That’s got nothing to do with the draft. That was the free agency system that made sure lower ranked clubs got properly compensated for their loss of important players to them. That wasn’t thievery, that was based on what Hawthorn were paying him.

Looks unbelievable for his size.

While it seems there is a slight knock on his kicking, his action is very natural.

Also looks as though he'd suit playing anywhere on the field.

Only negligence across the other 17 clubs will see him fall below 20. I can see a club taking a punt on him in the top 10.

Some things haven’t gone our way over the journey, but some things have inexplicably come out in our favour too.

Swings & roundabouts.

Not gonna lose sleep over an NGA product we’ve put precious little into and few knew about prior to this year.

Bigfooty’s Ed Pascoe (eDPS) who has a thread on the draft hopefuls has to date left Andrew out of his monthly Top 20s. He was asked about him and this was his response:-

“He is in the 15-30 range for me at the moment and could find his way into my top 20 next month still. He is very raw I can’t recall a player as raw as him being talked about as a top 10 pick in my time of covering the draft, he will take a very long time to reach his peak and when you have all these midfielders who will no doubt come on a lot quicker it would take a brave club to take him ahead of day a Ben Hobbs who could be a high level midfielder for over 10 years where as Mac could be one of the best talls in the game in half that time.

“No doubting his athletic ability and talent but for me he is far to raw to even consider in the top 10 when you have so many midfielders in this draft impressing.”

JT is right here. Is Mac getting better because of the effort the Dees have put into him? and does that discourage clubs from putting effort into these kids - and therefore make the Academies meaningless?

It’s a ‘half pregnant’ plan the AFL has created.

Looking at Andrew's highlights he is still a few years off AFL. He is not a great kick and needs to add 10-15kg of muscle. It will be interesting to see where he lands.

I love the athleticism and the similarities with Aliir Aliir are obvious. Still not convinced a club will be brave enough to take him inside the top 20.

7 clubs apparently took ruck prospects in their mid-year draft.  Hopefully that means that there are 7 clubs ‘off the boards’ looking for developing rucks with their first picks.  Gives us a chance to have a look at this kid.

Quite right but none of that would stop a club (including one of those 7 clubs) from selecting a young up and coming potential ruck star. The only question mark should be whether they have other needs which are more immediate and they think there are better players available.

Vision from Mac Andrew’s two representative games this year.

First up, the game for the NAB AFL Academy vs Geelong played in late April.

Next, the Under 19 Challenge Match for Vic Country vs Vic Metro from July.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
