Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Salem's ability to get receive the ball under pressure, know what he wants to do before he gets it and execute a quick kick lace out to one of his teammates would have to be the best in the AFL I reckon.  Bloke is a magician.

Totally agree.

An excellent kick, who importantly actually does not attempt many high risk kicks - which is line with our low risk, high percentage philosophy).

Another element of our philosophy is predictably. A big factor in how often Salem hits a target when under pressure is that he knows his teammates will be in the right spots, which is almost always a short lead up pass or near the boundary line.

There was good example near the end of the game where under pressure he turned to the boundary and hit a short bail out to Gus.

This rule is a joke. Even at first bounce Boak got ball we tackled him correctly and he dropped it but received the free because we held on to him after he dropped it. Has me totally confused. In my days it was dropping/holding the ball every time.

Here is the rule on "incorrect disposal"

18.6.3 Free Kicks - Holding the Ball: Incorrect Disposal. Where a Player in Possession of the Football has not had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if that Player elects to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when Legally Tackled. For the avoidance of doubt, a Player does not elect to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when: (a) the Player genuinely attempts to Correctly Dispose of the football; (b) the Legal Tackle causes the football to be dislodged from the Player’s possession.

If you haven't had prior opportunity, it's not a free kick if you "genuinely attempt to correctly dispose of the ball" or it it comes out as a result of the tackle.

The grey area IMO is the "genuine attempt" - neither Boak nor Dixon had prior opportunity, but did they "genuinely attempt" to dispose of the ball? If not, then it was HTB. If so, then there was no HTB free and both were then correctly awarded a free for being held too long.

The first bounce Gawn hit the ball forward about 10m, to me that showed our intent to be positive from the start.  No flick over the head handballs, it was everything we needed to do to get the win.

Hats off to Mark Williams, the development of our young players is the best it has been at the club.  Petty and Jordon last night were outstanding, we know what Pickett, Rivers, Jackson can do.  Spargo has an amazing footy IQ, would love for him to get a run through middle at some stage.

The back 6 are just one complete unit, the 7 blokes that play back there May, Lever, Petty, Hibberd, Salem, Hunt, Rivers are the best backline in the AFL.

We need to put away Hawthorn and Gold Coast cement our top 4 spot.  I like that we will play 3 top 8 sides in the lead up to finals

While both teams played off a 5 day break we looked as fresh as a daisy and Port barely gave a yelp.

Huge for us to play 4 quarters with 5 days, travel and in enemy territory then convincingly win.

While 'just' 4 points, it was an enormous performance in terms of entrenching us in the top 4 and embedding belief in each other and the system.

And I would like to think it makes us more likely to get marquee time slots with the best umpires.

And that is not even sarcastic.

That is the part players are taking advantage of and umpires are adjudicating incorrectly.

They are paying a free kick against the tackler when the ball spills free.

On another matter throwing the ball does my head in. There would have been 20 last night from Port alone.

Meggs was super impressed with Harry Petty tonight, he thought it was the Number 35’s best game in the Red and Blue!

Perhaps because Harrison is like ANB ( full on SA) Kossie  ( adopted SA sort of) and Jake (SA for 4 years) Tommy Sparrow (SA full on young gun) are all so comfortable with Adelaide Oval we produced a very good result up there with the Dogs and Lions wins.

Just the tonic after the dip in form and a timely reminder to the footy world this Demon team is not going anywhere and a serious top4 contender for this 2021 flag.

How was Dixon mark paid in the final siren!?

I saw Georgiadis have a CLEAR attempt at a mark, bounced off his hands straight to Dixon and yet they paid him the mark?

Absolute woeful decision.

You could add Motlop incorrect disposal for wines goal, Mays holding the man (vs incorrect disposal), and Oliver being dumped without the ball for butter’s goal.  For us, Kozzies 50 was dodgy.

Viney had a great pressure game, and it is clear some posters here just don't value pressure and their idea of analysis is stats without understanding impact. Pressure in the midfield helps defence. Watch the Port interchange bench just before half time, they looked dead, that was a result of pressure.

Jack had a great pressure game, but some posters value ball use and decision making too. For the most Jack's ball use was terrible. But higher TOG and working his way back, if he plays the pressure game and stays within his limitations, he'll be a valuable asset to our midfield. If his pressure is down at all, like it was last week, and his ball use continues to be ordinary, he's a liability. I don't think anyone can deny that.

Doesnt BBB just love to play in front.  He is a ripper imo. Like a golfer on a course he knows well, the midfield will learn exactly where you can afford to 'miss' .  Take 5-10 percent off the kick. He will be tough to stop and will continually bring the ball to front and centre.

Ps convinced james jordan is the second coming of a young joel selwood. Head over the ball, gets the high contact frees,  courageous, skillful.  What a debut season so far.

Actually, this is a great call. I had him pegged as a bit of a Brad Sewell clone, but I think he's cleaner than Sewell and can totally see the Selwood comparisons.

I actually reckon both were legitimate free kicks for held too long. Dixon barely touched the ball before May disposed of him, and obviously too long. The Motlop ‘throw/disposess’ for the Wines goal was ‘orrible. Had prior opportunity, didn’t dispose correctly, or attempt to do so. There was another in I think the third quarter, ample opportunity, tackled, dropped it rather than dispossessed.

Who writes these rules?  When does a player ever 'elect to incorrectly dispose of the ball'?  Perhaps when they deliberately throw it, but a fist missing an attempt to handpass is hardly 'electing'.  But what about a player who had prior opportunity who is then tackled and genuinely ATTEMPTS to kick the ball but misses it. No free kick according to that.  Any guide to the perplexed?

I was going to bring this play up myself. The way he split that pack and hit Langers on the chest in such little time was for me, one of the highlights of the match. He cant kick 50m to save himself but his vision is outstanding.

I really like Spargo as he plays to his limitations, and every player in front of him knows it. He’s the most consistent ball user we have (in that he’s almost exclusively going to kick it 15-30 metres), and I think the forwards love it because they lead to him. They go hard and early and he honours the lead every time. I think he’s been fantastic this year.

It's still terrible coaching. BBB could have kicked 20 past outing against them. You play two defenders on him then, not your best interceptor. Dumb, dumb coaching.

What?

How on earth could you come to that conclusion???

Kossie marked it. Jonas assumed, incorrectly, that it would not be awarded. He then threw him to the ground preventing him from immediately playing on or giving it off. Which is exactly what the 50 was brought in to penalize.

Sure Jonas was unlucky, but it doesn't matter a jot that he thought it was play on. Didn't for Friiter - and nor should it have.

Awsome to see.

If his body had held up Trenners could have been a good captain.

But gee Big Maxy is a great one.  Loved hearing him respond to a question from the Eddy or someone on the Fox Footy panel, when he was interviewed post match.  The conversation was about how Kossie had seemingly pulled himself out of a form slump and got himself up to put in a great game against the Power and the question asked of Max was "What did you say to him as captain to get him up for the game?".  Taking absolutely no self credit, Max deflected the premise of the question and proceeded to talk with words to the effect of what an incredible contributor Kossie was to the MFC and how great his performances were and how he had been so amazingly reslilant in the context of the family tragedy that he had been through at the start of the year and how it would be great for him to hopefully get to spend a bit of time with them over the weekend as well.

In the same interview, Max had a bit of a laugh at himself for getting his head sat on in that screemer the Port bloke took on his head, then had a rye dig at Jake Lever for pushing the Port player up there and a laugh about it with Steven May.

His work ethic and commitment on the track are elite, his onfield performances are amazing, his work with the media helps elevate the marketability of the MFC and his social and emotional connection with his teammates is sensational and his leadership has us playing the best, most disiplined team first footy that I've ever seen from the MFC.  He totally respects the MFC history and great players and personalities.

Hard to think of a better MFC captain that we've had in a long time.  Another diamond in the rough.

Congratulations on 150 games big Gawn dog.

Great summary and so fitting of Maxy.

I can't stop thinking of what MFC and Maxy might be by his200th match in 2 years time!!

I dont think Jonas had a reasonable indication from the umpire.  The late whistle on the play but the umpire left the door open for Jonas to think it was touched off the contest and he was free to tackle.  It looked like he was committed to the tackle by the time the whistle blew.  I am happy to be corrected, but if the roles were reversed I would not have been happy if our defender had not committed to the tackle when there was no whistle.  Fair result IMV is just to pay the mark and get on with it.

If the whistle was one second earlier, I would violently agree with you.  It was poor by the umpire to be so slow on blowing the pea.  He created the problem.

Ben Brown was a success tonight and didn’t have to kick a single goal to help us win. Straightened us right up and provided a target. Brought it to ground, followed up at ground level, hit up targets inside 50. He must stay in the side. When TMac has an off week, Brown is the one that can step up and hit the scoreboard

Yep, if we can get a first rounder for Weideman, I'd do it. But that's by the by. Brown should be in the side for the rest of the year. Sam shouldn't get another look in. injury permitting.

JJ earnt the number 2 wing spot, especially after Gus' ordinary performance against the Giants.

The move of Brayshaw to the high half forward role and playing as the extra on baller at stoppages then even switching with Petracca was a very good decision. That's a better role for Gus than the wing against a fast running side like the Power.

I'm not convinced that's quite right. Gus definitely played some wing and JJ definitely played some half forward. I'll have to watch the replay again.

Not this year Harry P is going along great guns and knows how to be a defender.

Have  liked HP since I first watched his highlight reel when first drafted. JTaylor another bow please!

PS Reckon mid year recruit Daniel Turner will also be a a ripper.  Maybe the heir apparent to Maysie once the best in the business retires. (Hopefully never) Just watch his highlights reel and agsin I say it there is a definite feel of the Mitch McGoverns in him!

Very good performance all round.

Dont worry about stats both Brown and Viney were vital. Pressure was back where it needs to be across the board and the 1%ers were back.

Loved our defensive pressure from the inside 50 tackles to the set up as soon as we turned it over

Who would have thought a Friday could get even better!

Brown didn’t do a whole lot for his first game back but you could see the port defenders still worry about him and couldn’t help but follow him. It allowed most of their defenders to be near brown and have other forwards sneak off into some space. He’ll always get the best defender because if he doesn’t he can kick 3+ goals. Allows fritsch McDonald Jackson Gawn  to be able to beat their opponents when in the forward line.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
