Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

What To Do With Jack Viney

It is noticeable that he is an enthusiast of the 'kick it to me' syndrome; if this is done in a fast series of plays, Viney will stop that flow as he receives the ball (from a mark or free) to make sure the crowd realises he has the ball (well, congratulations) and thus, we lose that initial flow/run/ball movement speed just long enough for the opposition backs to run back into position - advantage of 'team' excellence and forward innovation wasted in his hands.

That is truly ridiculous. Go back and watch some of the videos of the games. Viney is the ultimate team player/one percenter.

Nope. But sometimes - rarely - he does so once or twice to ensure a guernsey, next week.

I worry for him long-term

His style of play, lack of skills and speed is going to be exposed big time in the next two years plus.

It's not like he can play an outside role, go forward or back

He's just going to be stuck in the middle and clog up a position that we desperately need other assets in

I don't think its a question of fitness - it's a question of his football ability

I think  that you are looking at a half glass empty at Jack now, Yes he should have come back through the Casey team but the VFL has been variable and missing in action since May.
I would think if he is no good this week he may have to be dropped but as we know he always plays some valuable footy when the finals are near. It's time for a lift again back to his April firm.

Don't they always say that players struggle in their second game back from a lay off.

Backing him in this week to a) play well and b) being an asset to our setup.

If not, some tough decisions will need to be made, particularly getting our balance of midfielders right - eg Harmes or Jordon going out of the side at the expense of Viney who appears to have priority.

That is also my assesment, but it wont happen.

Play him forward? In what world?

He can't kick more than 40m, has 0 aerial skills, isn't nimble, hand to foot drop is slow and defenders would have a field day running off him.

I genuinely hope we trade him. Might sounds harsh but he's going to be a liability and hurt us in the future.

Or I hope young guys come in for Viney

Spot on heard Storm are recruiting...

What basis do you have to say You are backing him to play well

Blind Freddy can see he is busted and can barely run. He un balnaces our midfield group who did ok without him

Bring him back if he ever gets un injured and Fit!

Not saying this justifies it, but my guess would be:

- He had a full season last year and a full preseason.

- We've been getting beaten badly for clearances.

- Burgess often rolls like that. He's not very conservative.

Viney seems to have lost his burst of speed. He’s never been quick but he was ok over the first few steps. Having had yet another foot injury and limited pre season, he seems to be missing that yard of pace that helped him. Without this he’s a liability in both defense and attack.
I am sure he will get better when he regains fitness and he’s still someone I want in the team come finals. He’s a beast and a competitor and he will put his body on the line every week. He’s a perfect finals player.
Just don’t agree with bringing him into the side to gain fitness when we have 18 fit guys in the VFL busting a gut. Not to mention we don’t exactly lack inside mid options.

Viney will be back. Everyone seems a little off the boil, and plenty of speculation as to why. I hope they can rally this weekend and put up a more spirited effort. It's a long season, and despite not playing great footy, we are where we are which is unexpected. Doomsdayers must live miserable lives to be so pessimistic. We will bounce back.

I question, as others have, why after such an extensive layoff, he walked straight back into the Seniors. I think we should have built him back up through the Reserves. He looks well off the pace and unable to pick up the game plan.

One problem of course is that the VFL is so dysfunctional, (even before COVID lockdowns), that one cannot rely on playing any given week, and with ridiculous number of teams in the competition, getting a decent contest is quite uncertain.

He most definitely didn't have a full pre-season and hasn't for a number of years now.

Because the VFL has been on again, off again and sometimes farcically one sided, and training and intra clubs might be a better indicator of his readiness. He has come straight back in from injury in the past and made an impact. Eg, around finals time in 2018, iirc.

Just speculating, Kent...

Yes he is banged up, he is not the fastest or most skillful and he is not Mr. Conviviality, he needs to be managed, doesn't kick many, but he is fierce. And not only fierce, he is now very smart with his aggression, he's not getting rubbed out or throwing cheap shots, but putting the pressure on in a very legal way that harries ALL opposition midfields. This is quantifiable, this is not MFCSS or norm smith curse, or theoretical value. It is well documented what he does to the opposition, compare apples with apples, he is (excuse the hyperbole) a weapon and should be used carefully, sadly not a xbox cheat code that can be used all the time.

Now think of the Finals we have lost over the recent years and certain 'big' games, we have always been a bit under weight and our best players have been sniped, for me JV value is that in the coming finals he will be the one to fly the flag, and protect the quick, the skillful and the goal kickers, so they get to do their thing and we don't look like school boys playing against men. Remember Gawn getting monstered against Port a few years ago, and no-one helped him, was a pretty bad look (no Viney), then think Viney ragdolling Rance, he and Watts weren't mates , didn't stop Viney getting in.

The reason I criticize other who post that he should be traded etc, is I feel people forget too quickly, and don't understand the bravery it takes to play the way he does. Do you think he doesn't feel all the hits he takes for the club.

Of all the people who play for the club I think only Jones bleeds more Red and Blue than this guy.

You are kidding yourselves if you think we can win a prelim or a GF against a team like Geelong West Coast or Richmond without him. Maybe we don't need him against the Dogs, and on balance I would want him against the Lions. And AVB who is a warrior as well, I am sorry to say is a much worse decision maker.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
