Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If they win they may well be in the 8 at round's end

Yes I know, but if they lose it makes it very hard for them. We must be ready to go first bounce, no letting them get their tails up.

Strangle them from the start, run hard, make good decisions and take our chances

It is a mistake imo. We had nobody to kick to for large parts of the Essendon game. Also, McDonald plays 5x better when another key forward in the side. Brown had earnt his spot.

Essendon are almost the best team we'll come up against in terms of flooding back while maintaining some semblance of a forward setup.

Personally, I'm glad we're sticking this setup. I see there being a time in the future where either Weideman or Brown are mainstays but Brown isn't covering the ground well enough and Weid needs to build confidence.

GWS are unlikely to be able to fill our forward 50 in the same way that Essendon did and as a result, I think TMac, Fritsch and to a lesser extent Jacko will all benefit.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. On the contrary, I meant to say they can be in the 8 if they win and as you say may not make the eight at all if they lose, so it is huge game for them. And i have no doubt they will come out hard

In a funny way it might help us. I sometimes feel that for top clubs (and i'm still pinching myself that we are one this year) they sometimes find it  bit hard to get up for games when the opposition isn't up, and those games can, somewhat counterintuitively, become danger games .

But if the giants bring the heat from the start hopefully that gets us wired from the get go too.

On the Gus & Gawny podcast, which was recorded on Tuesday, both said "no change" when talking about selection. They attended the Casey game. I'm just saying that what we want and what the people in the Club know are completely different things. And at 12-2, I'll park my opinions for now.

Yeah, quite happy they kept Essendon to 57pts.
Showed they're far more concerned with defence than offence within the club.

really interested by gw$ midfield mix and that they're clearly intending to go head to head with us

gawn / jackson - oliver - petracca - viney - harmes - jordon - sparrow plus langdon - brayshaw on the wings
vs
mumford / flynn - taranto - ward - hopper - green - kennedy - perryman plus kelly - whitfield on the wings

winning the contest will go a long way toward winning the game, you'd think

I reckon there is a long term plan around BB.  I’m guessing there is a lot of thought going into when he comes back into the team to ensure he has a confidence building run. We don’t want that [censored] Mumford running through him for example.

Had we not had such a successful year so far, BB would have been rushed back in but we have had the luxury of not having to do that. When BB returns I think it will be permanent and will add that touch of forward class come finals time whilst freeing up Fritsch and make our forward line a whole lot more potent.

They are still experimenting with the smaller line up. I would make it work with Brown from now but I get it.

Nathan is unlucky.

We should take care of this mob. Our home deck too. Time to be ruthless.

Agree. Both midfields ( inside and outside ) have excellent players and at full strength.

Was so hoping for bb to play.

He must be getting closer.

The positive is that Luke Jackson is hitting the scoreboard more but he or Max need to have some plan.

We must have Max or Luke spend more time in our forward line.

In the dons game they spent too much time away from our goals and often very close to each other.

It was telling to see Spargo up against three dons talls.

Frittas great in space but cant take a pack mark. Not strong enough. Hes not even a tall  (although his hair helps)as such which means effectively we have been playing with only one tall fwd. I love his work and skill but hes also struggling lately.

Tmac has been doing a lot but needs assistance and also a tad down in form.

Can we have Luke spend more time as a tall forward this game please and maybe Trac as well. And Kozzie too.

Fritta has credits though. Our leading goalscorer too. Hell fight back, hes a class act.

I just hope Bb gets a gig next week and we kick enough to roll gws.

Agreed, but our forward line needs to have a fully (or at least partially) freed Fritta and TMac, and one or two attacking, pacey smalls. To my way of thinking, BB with standard support might have just occupied enough key defenders to achieve this layer of mobility. However, there may be a 'trick' to the anti-GWS backline roles for Jackson and Gawn down forward.

Our 6 specialist forwards contributed a grand total of 3 goals between them last week, and Goodwin thinks that all is well - the mind boggles.

How many uncontested marks will Haynes & Davis take this week because we are looking for the marking option that doesn't exist?

Forecast is for 60% chance of any rain, with possible rain of 0 - 1mm. Hardly a torrential downpour and certainly no reason to keep Brown out.

My biggest concern for the match is that Mumford injures Max with another intentional 'clumsy' act - there I said it so that should nix it!

They had the same huge game last week and didn't bring the heat...would have been in the 8 if they beat the Hawks.

We went with an extremely defensive game plan last week. Flooded back in big numbers. Watch the replay and note where players like TMac, Spargo, Kozzy even Fritsch appear a lot of the time. The reason our forwards didn't contribute as many goals is that they were all high up the ground and we scored surging forward together.

It's not particularly great footy to watch, but it won us the game coming off the bye when our form hasn't been great and against an in-form high scoring team.

I thought Brown would come in this week, but I think you're off the mark with this angle, and there's just 0 chance Haynes and Davis will be by themselves in our 50.

TMac and Fritsch both in the top 5 distance covered for the game.

Top 5 average speed in defence - ANB, Jordon, Salem, Jackson, Sparrow.

The heat maps reflect this defensive aspect too.

Weid needs to build confidence

Not sure we’ll see Weid again this year, unless Tmac or Dogga go down (or one of the big 3 in the backline go down and Tmac gets moved back). Based on Casey last week, that’s the ‘replacement’ role I reckon he’ll now play, which is much more to his strengths, not a permanent KPF, but a mobile tall/2nd ruck with forward skills.

We're 12-2.

You're running the same schtick you ran last year when we were 7-8.

Pretty sensible selection for mine.

There would not have been the Demonland push for Ben Brown to come in had we kicked straight last week. And while Brown was solid in the VFL, 5 goals flattered his performance a little bit IMO. Moreover, Sparrow was the player mostly likely in the gun and he was very good last week in limited game time.

My feel is that in order for Brown or Weideman to force their way up from the VFL, they really need to be taking some big high pack marks , covering a lot of kilometres and kicking straight. Without that trifecta they are both liabilities.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
