Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Luke ‘dogga’ Jackson rising star favourite

This is a classic example of the confusing nature of the Rising Star Award.  It's always difficult to get a clear answer on the criteria for how it's awarded or the degree to which the judges look at:
a) the performances they've had over the course of the year.
b) the potential that player exhibits, based on their performances that year.

There has always been an ambiguity in the Rising Star award which has seen players like Lewis Taylor, who had a fine 2014, beating Marcus Bontempelli, who showed clear signs of the player he was going to be in the second half of that year.  River and Jordon have both had greater and more consistent output that Jackson this year but, from what we have seen, most would agree Jackson has the greater potential to be a 'star' in the future.

This keeps the award wide open and probably suggests it's between Jackson, Cox and Green.

Lewis Taylor beat Marcus Bontempelli for it a few years ago. Surely it's based on the season and not potential.

Nat saying he wins it or should be favorite over Jacko but one thing to consider with Jordon is his output v's game time.  Most weeks hes in the lowest few of time on ground and is still producing great numbers.

Last 2 weeks

R15 - TOG = 62% - 21 Disp

R13 - TOG = 57% - 23 Disp -

That's a mystery in itself. From what I understand Jordon can run all day. Why is he getting limited TOG?

It's both - Bont's first season was nothing special whereas Taylor looked like a 25/goal a game star. Hasn't kicked on but it happens.

In terms of the Jordon/Jackson comparison, JJ is a hard working third year player. Jackson could be NikNat good and is a regular 2nd ruck as a 19yo in a top side having a decent scoreboard impact. Only one is a chance of winning rising star

Still a young player, and I note that some of the other youngsters have lighter numbers too, eg Tom Sparrow. Probably managing loads as they aren’t machines and as I said still young.

Trent Rivers is paying 51/1... huge odds. He's flying so far under the radar it's not funny.

Think it may be a versatility thing, Brayshaw used to play 65-70% TOG when he was playing inside mid behind Trac, Oliver, Viney. Now he plays 85% time on ground on the wing. Essentially I think JJ’s second position is bench!

I'm surprised that Dogga is so short in the betting and the extent of the praise for him  .He is obviously athletic but to  date has generally had wooden hands .Hogan would clunk marks all day long even early in his career but Luke either drops them or takes them with 2 bites .If his marking comes good he will be a weapon but at the moment he is fairly limited.

Calling him just athletic is under selling his value.

His skills are almost unprecedented for a man his size. He is sublime below his knees, works way through traffic with ease and makes smart decisions.

There's nothing wrong with his hands per se, but by his own admission he does need to put some weight to help him stay strong in the contest.

Hogan is an unfair comparison - his body was ready-made for football. Jackson has work to do in that area but has the potential to be one of the most complete players the game has seen.

There's not a position on the ground that he's not suited to and that kind of flexibility is everything in the modern game.

In cricketing parlance, Jacko is our Richard Hadlee, Andrew Flintoff or Jaques Kallis. He allows so much flexibility at the selection table to go small, tall, or in between. The fact that we haven't had select an underdone Ben Brown is a testament to this.

More to do with the fact that we have to find 400% across the team to be on the bench. Jordan plays in a group that wishes to play above 85% so something and someone has to give. I would prefer Oliver and Petracca hit their minutes than giving them more bench time so Jordan can get out there more.

Jackson is pushing the best ruckman in the game out of the ruck at times.

That is unprecedented for a 19 year old. He is utterly ridiculous and will be a top 10 player in the league soon on this trajectory.

It's interesting that there have been a lot of repeat nominees this year, suggesting that a lot of older players have been nominated.

I wonder how much impact Covid has had on this year's draftees, who missed most if not all of their senior year?

All playing consistent roles for the team. He was essentially arguing we’ve drafted as well as anyone - particularly in 17 and 18 when we didn’t have early picks.

One third of the team in 3 drafts is exceptional.

I'm really happy with Taylor's recruitment and our development of players, but what's enabling these guys to have the impact they're having, is the easily and clearly defined roles and the system we play. They're all role players.

When all you need to do is work at your game at VFL level and then when you get your chance, play your role for the team, it must greatly reduce pressure on emerging players and clearly allows them to flourish.

Well Nik Cox was horrendous tonight. Jackson will shorten after that.

Cox shouldn't even be in the conversation. Sorry. He barely touched it last week and was deadset liability last night with his lack of physicality and lack of running. Will be a good player but has tired massively and shouldn't get near the RS.

I'm watching shades of Cale Morton with Cox..

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
