Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

You can watch almost all of it - for some reason all the replays starts 5 minutes in and ends few minutes before the final siren.

But well worth watching. Great to get the opportunity to see the players in the VFL team and our players pushing for a call up.

Random thoughts on the game:

  • Casey employ a very similar model, which i guess is captain obvious, but interesting to watch nonetheless
  • One example is the way we look to move it forward around the boundary
  • A related point is the roles players play mirror the structure of the AFL - eg daw rucked for much of the day (with chop outs from Weed), Bowey in the Salem role, White in the Fritter role, baker in the langers role etc etc
  • Weid worked hard - played the role Tmac does in the seniors, so perhaps his best bet is to come in for tmac. He dropped a couple of marks where he had done all the work and had his opponent cold, which seems often be an issue for him. Must be a technique thing ( in cricket we would say hard hands) because he has good hands on the lead
  • Brown still does not look all that agile, which I suspect is what is keeping him out of the team.
  • But 5 goals is 5 goals and you have to love how accurate his kicking is.
  • His fourth was a thing of beauty. Had to kick from about 40 metres, on a slight angle, with wind also being a factor. Such is his confidence with his technique that he was able to deliberately start it to the right of the goal post and let the wind bring it back. perfect
  • I also thought brown was ok pressure wise, creating at least one goal with a tackle
  • Melksham's pressure was also pretty good i have to say, which is a great sign. Hit a beautiful 50 metre left foot kick to a forward's advantage, which is exactly why he is big chance of getting back into the side
  • I love Neville Jetta - easily one of my all time favorite players. Works so hard in every game he plays and a brilliant role model for the young players (postscript; just watched all the VFL goals video and saw that jetts kicked the last of the game - something  missed on the replay becuase it finished before the end of the game! - nice gola nev - boys really got around him too)
  • Jones was simply brilliant. Played smart, played with intensity, played like a true leader and played like an intent on winning his spot back. Pretty good goal too
  • I really like Captain Jack Sparrow, and thought he was terrific against the bombers, but i suspect Jones will bump him into the medical sub role this week given Goodies comments about picking blokes in form
  • Bedford has some real toe
  • Bowey and Laurie are both natural footballers and both are excellent kicks, Bowey particularly so, which warms my heart
  • Rosman has some real x factor and get up and go too - loved his super smart kick into a small pocket of space to set up one of brown's goals
  • Vanders looked to be moving really freely and used the ball really well in the main. Is a wild card for finals for sure given how strong in the contest he is and the importance goody puts on winning the  hard ball - not mention our focus this year of only having one player go to the contest and/or tackle.

You probably realise that Spargo is playing his role then and playing it very well. Has been extremely consistent this year.

Oh, then i football.

Spargo has been fantastic this year. Kicked some clutch goals too - the one on the weekend was really important.

One thing that i reckon some might not fully take into account when assessing how well kozzie, Spargo and Nibbler (and Fritter to a lesser degree) have played is that often when they get the ball they are gassed as a result of how much running they do.

Watch how often all three are way up the ground, often deep inside the opposition's 50. And when we win the ball they are often a link in the transition chain and also have to sprint back to get back inside our 50

And compare them to a player like Cameron for the Lions who spends most of his time inside his 50 and when he does leave that area rarely pushes further up than half way.

Loved his game too. Was nostalgic. Would make me tres happy if he were given a promotion and stayed there. None more deserving, and his efforts on Sunday suggest (I hope) that it’s more likely than not.

Thanks KC, Binman and all other posters really appreciate the player stats and special comments. I guess that we all beg to differ on different players but the stats are pointing to Weid as CHF And BBB our future FF. Problem for the Weid is that TMac has dominated  that role in the first 14 games. Hopefully BBB showed enough to get back into the Team and Weid keeps on improving until he gets another shot at it. We need a big key forward so Frittata can get back off the leash where he does his best work and we don’t waste so many precious inside 50’s.

Really good summary Binman

I thought Weid tried really hard and did a few nice things but just lets himself down occasionally - hopefully he will continue to build more confidence
Jones was great he really did look a class above that level - ability to work through traffic and hit targets was impressive
Brown was ok he did take a few marks and with the goals in the bank has put his hand up - defensively I still have concerns
AVB is an absolute beast if only his disposal was reliable - cant fault his aggression and I'm sure there would be a few looking over their shoulder when he is around
Rosman does move well, can kick, can mark, is prepared to tackle - I think he will develop nicely with another preseason to build more strength
Bowey has excellent balance and disposal - he will play seniors sometime not too sure where but it looks like back six in the short term - that might keep him out if they all stay fit and in form. I liked the fact he was annoyed whenever he didn't execute as well as he can
Haven't seen much of Majak - he tried hard but didn't have huge impact and maybe still building fitness
Smith is so frustrating as he looks like he could be anything but never seems to play consistently

I’d agree with that, would be interesting to see if he accepted it. I could picture another club coming in with a 3 year deal on similar/slightly more coin. A bit of certainty would be very attractive to a young man.

Stats wise it seems like he was much more involved which is good.

I would personally get Ben Brown in but it could well be the club will want a body of two good games from him before earning a recall.

Great, but he isn’t a forward. We don’t need another linkman playing high half forward, unless you think TMac is inferior ?  As a forward he is way off it. That’s all this chat is about. Is Weid the answer to our forward line problems? So he has a new role coz he has been proven to be incapable of playing forward ??? What am I missing? He had two shots on goal yesterday and never looked like it! He can play his new role at Casey and hope that McDonald is hurt or has a form slump.

Reichwaldt, i cannot spell his name and i don't care, and Hawkins are both playing HHF's, and Macca was tried along with Hogan, (pretty good at it), so i'm still prepared to go with the roll, seeing as we are winning.

Are you talking Riewoldt?? I don’t get what “going with the roll” means? You think we can fit him in with Ben Brown and Tom McDonald and Luke Jackson? You’ve got me completely baffled

Random thoughts on the game:

  • Brown still does not look all that agile, which I suspect is what is keeping him out of the team.

Possibly accentuated when not at his peak fitness Bin but i reckon he pretty much always gives this impression.  While not being as agile as some of the genuine tall (very good) forwards going around like Cameron (196cm), Lynch (199cm) he is extra tall at 200cm compared to these fellas and as a result probably a tad more unco.  Not as dynamic either but does seem to get the job done by getting the basics right and playing within his limits (when at or near his best...not so far this season).

It is also worth noting that on 2021 season averages, after supposedly being NQR having had an interrupted pre-season, BB is sitting just behind T-Mac on goal averages (T-Mac 1.71  BB 1.67).  Yes T-mac has had a much bigger impact in general around the ground in general ball getting and use as well as a pressure perspective.

Tackles inside 50, pressure acts in general.  The FD probably wanted a fair bit better in these areas where he is well behind T-Mac and LJ (as an aside LJ is equal 1st in the league for pressure acts as a Key Forward along with Freo's Josh Treacy!).  BB ahead of Weideman on tackles inside 50 but well behind LJ & T-Mac on pressure acts.  Maybe this is part of the agility aspect you are referring to.

Accuracy of our KFs so far this season are...  T-Mac (58.5%) , LJ (57.1%), BB (55.6%) and Weid (30%).  Haven't included Mitch Brown here as he's only played one match so far.

I don't think his height is the reason he's not mobile
Eric Hipwood 202 cm
Harry McKay 204cm
Buddy 199cm
Josh Kennedy 196cm
Max King 202cm
Ben King 202cm

All of the above plus Cameron and Lynch I would argue are more mobile than BB. That I'm afraid is one of his limitations. He does have some strengths to off set that but he's never going to be very agile and add to our forward 50 pressure game IMO

Now even you're saying this?

If we're fully fit, as we currently are, which midfielder is vandenBerg replacing?

And the only two of those Key Forwards who are ahead on goal averages (career) are Buddy & Kennedy Sydee.  I agree he isn't as agile as some but is just as effective in terms of scoring/conversion.

Equal 5th with Tex & Tomahawk.  Only players above are in order...

1.  Buddy

2. Cameron

3. Kennedy

4.  Riewoldt

I'd be happy with the 5th best (KF) running around in my team if we / he can get back to his best or somewhere near it.

The rest is important in terms of getting to a minimum level that satisfies the FD but he's there to convert at the end of the day and he's one of the best (Key Forwards) going around when he's on.

In terms of career accuracy (KFs)...

T-mac is No.1 for us sitting at 8th in the league at 62.1% and BB is 2nd for us and 12th in the league at 59.8%.  Noting that both our boys are more accurate (career) than any of the other Key Forwards we have mentioned so far including the likes of Buddy, Kennedy, King, Cameron, McKay etc.

Worth noting that Weid directly involved in 3 goals plus the one he kicked himself

Not suggesting he should return to the AFL just yet but it was probably a better game overall than I originally thought

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
