Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Unfair to Nibbler who has improved his accuracy markedly.

Yes i didn't put Nibbler in as i don't count him as a small forward or genuine mid RMD.  Hardly unfair as i don't see or expect him to be taking as many shots and would see him as a Medium Forward when spending time inside 50.

Yes he is quite good of late but often doesn't get as many set shot chances as some of the others named as he's often playing high up the field on an opponent or creating a link option on the outside somewhere.  He get's involved in plenty of scores which is a great asset also.

Some of the background stats...

He is running Equal 9th for set shot averages with Clarry & Lingers this season at 1.5 a match.   Goal Accuracy (overall not set shot) is 45% which is not too shabby.

Wouldn't be too worried about Viney. His Set shots would be better than that I reckon.

Possibly DR.  Provided he is within range of kicking reasonably accurately.  This also makes up the aggregate though.  Goal kicking accuracy obviously tends to become more difficult the further out you are from your natural kicking distance limits.  Part of our issue here is that we have a number of forwards and mid/forwards whose limit starts from about 30 meters (Spargo) out to around 40ish (Kozzie & Viney) before their set shot accuracy would appear to fall away quite badly.

All of this would be fine if we had a few more who were quite accurate from 40+ out but aside from T-Mac I'm not sure we do.  Fritsh might be the other from around 40 to 45.  Not sure how he fairs with set shots beyond that.  Would love to see the numbers here.

Not just goal kicking accuracy.
We really don’t have anyone who can reliably kick a set shot from distance 50 metres and beyond. This weekend we saw some monster goals from the likes of Green, Hipwood and others. Petracca can hit from long range but his accuracy is all over the place. Our mids have to constantly search wide and deeper into the forward for a set shot target. We don’t have a player who can mark on 50 and confidently go for a set shot. Both Browns can hit from long range but they are currently are not playing. We need some players that can take that option when our forward line is choked up. That’s one of my big gripes with Weid. He can win the ball whe moves up into space from goal but we have seen many of his set shots not even make the distance.

Yes this is part of what I'm referring to JC.  We struggle to score from set shots and many are limited with their accuracy to 30 to 40 meters.  As you have highlighted nicely, outside of that we struggle to kick set shots from further out.

I'm not sure how BB sits here but might be the key to changing this up if he comes back fit and can find his best form or close to it.

P.S. have seen Weid kick them quite comfortably from around 50. But only at VFL level.  Doesn't seem to have brought this asset to the big league very often so far.

This is haunting us already, NO TALL IN FORWARD LINE TO TAKE A MARK

You reap what you sow MFC Selectors. Garbage NON SELECTION!!

TOTALLY PF.  Why you would not want to offer a genuine tall forward target who can kick more goals than he misses from set shots and stretch the opposition down back?  As well as provide some chaff for the smalls to crumb off.  Silly stuff and may cost us the match tonight along with a shot at the top two.

Oliver gets it looks up and sees no one and then goes sideways.

Agree if we lose this you can blame the selection.

They are loaded with talls.

We won our first 6 games without Brown or Weideman. Structurally forward of Centre is not quite right at the moment. We’ve made a habit of making adjustments at half time. Let’s hope tonight is another one of those occasions.

Put this game down as the game that potentially STUFFED our season because of selections

Calm down Byron.

I do agree that on tonight it's get Ben Brown in and let him build form. He makes McDonald and Fritsch taller with his ability to draw defenders.

Along with all the other assets if he plays deep he will also straighten us up.  All these zany kicks to the pockets for little chance of a goal is killing us on the scoreboard.

To be honest Tom Mac, Harmes and Fritsch all had essentially the same shot in the 3rd quarter from a slight angle 45 out. The stats tell us they’d kick 2 out of 3 across the year. They kick those and it’s game over at 3/4 time. I’m not sure Brown is the answer. I think teamwork, cleaner ball use and better kicking for goal is the answer.

There is no point finding those targets, even on a slight 45 angle if very few of them can even make the distance let alone kick accurately THB.  Harmes probably the exception with distance from around 40/45 at present.

Sparrow and Tracc were the only ones that seemed capable tonight and you are not going to kick too many winning scores against the top 5/6 clubs relying on those two players finding their range and accuracy neither of whom are designated forwards.   The forward line failed to stand up again tonight.  It needs fixing.  Even if it means bringing in Mitch Brown for a stint in place of Fritsch maybe?

The door is open anyway and changes might come down to who performs at Casey tomorrow.

Brown won't be playing if he isn't in form in the VFL tomorrow and maybe even the week after ... selectors have shown that form dictates selection even if we are crying out for a tall to take their opportunity ... and that's the way it should be

Fritsch needz to lift. IM CALLING IT NOW

BB  MUST play next week. MB also in with a chance

BB MUST earn his spot next week. If he puts in a solid performance for Casey (2-3 goals, multiple marks, team acts etc) then he comes in. But no one should come in without earning it.

But they didnt. And how many easy marks did dons take due to our lack of height?

Not sure I’m buying the argument that Brown, who is known as a leading forward, will all of a sudden make our forward line better at contested marking.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
