Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If Ben Brown doesnt play the rest of the year

Brown was very good against Sydney, kicked goals, set one up for McDonald with a delightful block. I don't understand why people want to write him off based on one average game against Carlton in conditions that didn't suit him. He went back to the VFL and had a rubbish game but is a proven commodity. If we bring him back and it doesn't work over a couple of weeks either go with one less tall, pick Mitch or reinvestigate Weid after a few reserves games, but whatever he does it will be better than what we got yesterday. Weid's confidence is shot, which is no good for him but we're trying to consolidate a top four spot we can't keep waiting for him.

I really like what I read on here about rumours BBB was doing a mini preseason. I really hope that’s correct, and he comes into the team after the bye. If he can get some separation on the lead then we are a much better team.

If nothing else defenders are going to watch him more closely than they do SW. Brown, McDonald and Jackson deserve a month working together to see if they can click.

Aside from Weideman's age. He doesn't have much going for him. Too Timid, no confidence or consistency.

We aren't in a development stage anymore. The time is now. If Weid gets dropped sooks up and leaves, so be it. We need to pick the best side to trying a pinch a flag while we are in the window. Aside from the Big 4 (Rich, Hawks, Cats Eagles). Most sides only get about to years at their peak to win a flag.

Get Ben Brown, Mitch Brown in. Who cares just get someone in that will have a crack!!

Dropping BBB after only three matches was premature. It’s like, you haven’t  kicked a bag of 10. On yer way fellah. Next!

The sad part is his value at the trade table would now be zero. A third round pick would be considered amazing.

I wonder if Brown was dropped for lack of fitness.
When you play a whole team defense and have a strong focus on applying forward half pressure you need your forwards to be able to cover a lot of ground and go for repeat efforts.
Maybe BB has been doing a mini pre season and will be picked once his fitness improves.

It won't help him if he's consistently playing from behind against blonde haired defenders.

He’s often behind because he’s still running back to make sure we have a deep target when a midfielder plays on for no reason. It’s certainly a weakness of his game but a big problem is he team mates just don’t time it up with any of our forwards. Nor do they kick with the right weight to drop a ball for a forward. It’s either bomb it high or try to lace it through 4 defenders.

I think you have probably nailed it there - he certainly didn't look fit enough for mine

When he was at his peak he was always fairly weak defensively but could move a lot quicker on the lead and to get into position to receive

I reckon you've nailed it Jaded. In the Carlton game he covered a lot of ground but really struggled to get back into the forward line to be a threat. Glacial movement. And as others have mentioned, in the small sample size we have, Brown didn't appear to have the sharpness on the lead that he's known for.

Hopefully this six week physical tune up will get him back to the sort of shape he was in when he was bagging 60 goals a year.

Mind you, with our forward setup you'd struggle whether it was Ben Brown, Sam Weideman or Fred Fanning !

Oliver Cant kick a set shot to save himself so while not bad at crumbing Id say no.

Kossie set shots aren’t great either, Oliver will be resting there as opposed to resting on the pine and the reason is

Provides ability to win the ground balls and increase defensive pressure which has dropped off since we went with the extra tall

Very difficult to match up on and will take a decent medium defender as nobody is going to leave him unattended

his clearance/stoppage ability will provide scoring opportunities for himself and/or teammates

Pickett's goal accuracy this year is 39.2%. Oliver's is 30%.

Meanwhile TMac's is 63.6% and Fritsch is 60.5%.

I think you missed it or I did not convey it well. I was meaning there are no Casey reserves, meaning no team lower than our reserves / Casey seniors DJ.

Surely the first B in BBB doesn't stand for big? He's skinny and weak and gets pushed off the ball so easily. The only good thing apart of his game is that he's an accurate kick for goal.  But he has shown in the games played so far that he struggles to get separation off his man, is a poor mark over head and terrible defensively. I don't care what he's done in the past and either did North Melbourne. They didn't ship him off for no reason.

Make of it what you will, but Goodwin in his post-match:

- was not asked about Weideman's strikingly poor stats (thus no opportunity/requirement to restate or now distance himself from his 'Sam is a long-term player' stance)

- was strong on the poor delivery into the 50

- named 5 players pressing for selection, none of whom were Brown (of either variety)

Make also of it what you will:

- In the most recent Casey game, to my eyes B. Brown 1. exhibited all the negative attitude, endeavour, mobility and playing characteristics cited in earlier posts and 2. was largely marked one-on-one, not multi-teamed

- Weideman can perform in finals, but he - and/or the structure and/or activity around him - has lost whatever it was that allowed that. Is it possible for such capability to be regained? (note, Chris Dawes also kicked 3 goals in a final but look what happened thereafter...)

They both have the ability to get where the ball ain't as Jack Dyer would say and both have the same iron hands.

I would be getting a genuine great (forward) of the game, preferably a recently retired one, down to the club pronto and teaching the likes of Clarry,  Spargo & Kozzie how to kick set shots from various angles and distances.  As well as shots on the run under various amounts of pressure and angles.  The ideal for mine would be Gary Ablett Jnr.

I would also have him running some training drills with the forwards in order to connect more often, attempting to place the ball into space for them to run onto more often.  We just don't do enough of this when coming inside.  Tracc & Clarry could both do with this sort of drill in particular.  Many of our kicks coming inside 50 lack finesse and touch.  Most of them either mung balls or just blindly kicked in without any thought or use of the eyes.  Would also be helpful for the likes of Viney, Harmes and Hunt.

This break is an ideal opportunity for something like this to take place and could be the difference between making a PF or not and potentially making the big dance.

Might also help to put lessor light teams away earlier or see us having a few big percentage wins.  Even against some of the higher rated clubs.

Agree. Sam is a major disappointment. Give Ben and Mitch  go.  Nothing to lose and everything to gain. Mitch is very versatile too

His go is to get on the lead and players up the field kicking in front of him - not convinced we have the structure or the players up the ground that are great at delivering inside 50

True.  But he has two other big advantages, even if the ball isn’t delivered perfectly.  First, he is so tall he often draws a free kick from arm interference or over the shoulder contact.  Second, he can kick straight.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
