Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

POSTGAME: Rd 12 vs Brisbane

As I was watching the replay of the game again today, I couldn't help but think what an oppertunity Brisbane let pass them by last year when they assumingly (along with many others) passed up the oppertunity to sign up T Mac and instead chased and got Joe Daniher.

I suspect they would have got T Mac on a fraction of the coin and looking at the respective output of the pair, I know who I'd rather have.  Watching Daniher again yesterday reinforced to me how atrocious his goal kicking really is and what an asset T Mac's is.  Just take for example that shot that Daniher had where he tried to screw it round with a banana from 45m out on the boundary and ended up completely shanking it.  Compare that to T Mac absolutely nailing his set shots under pressure week in, week out.  These are momentum/game changing moments.

So glad we got no bites for T Mac last season and he's still at the club, producing his career best form again.

TMac is on about $800k a year I think so not sure that really holds true

There’s been a little bit of comment on the umpiring which, overall, I didn’t think was too bad. There will always be mistakes.

But the decision that I really didn’t understand was McCarthey’s mark in the second when Hipwood blocked Lever from contesting the ball. Hipwood made no effort to contest the ball and deliberately positioned himself between Lever and the ball ensuring Lever couldn’t contest it. The commentators supported Hipwood.

Am I right or wrong in thinking that should have been a free to Lever?

Agree the cost must have had a lot to do with the reluctance of 17 CLUBS not even responding or a phone call.

Just look at  the Taylor Harris scenario bit the same but  her alleged non team attitude this season would also be kicking in.

BTW I have complete faith that she wil not disrupt our AFLW culture and the pay issue is more controlled in the W comp and  if Daisy says  OK then it's OK. !!

To the letter of the law he needs to contest the mark. In practice, as long as the blocker doesn’t take his eyes off the ball and is in a realistic position to contest, they don’t pay it.

I agree BB thought agsin last night watching the replay for the second time Abdolutely Hipwood  only tried to prevent Jake from contesting. That's a free in any situation!!

I think it would reasonable to require Hipwood to put his hands up in the air for the mark, rather than purely hold Lever out of the contest, to escape scrutiny.

Also, watching the replay I think people may have judged Weid a little harshly. Much like the rest of the team (particularly the forward line) he was barely sighted in the first half, second half he was much more involved and took some good contested marks. His kicking wasn't great, but clunking some strong grabs might just give him a bit of a confidence boost. We can't wait for ever for everything to click, but maybe it isn't as far away as we might think.

He took 1 contested mark for the night?

Watching the replay, Petracca seemed pretty filthy with TMac for taking the goal in the final quarter. I'm not suggesting anything bad about it, TMac kicked a great goal, and I'm pretty sure Trac got over it pretty quickly. It was just funny seeing the look of Trac's face!

Payback for TMac having a crack at Petracca earlier for not moving the ball on quickly from halfback when TMac was free on the wing?

I was surprised by the crowd tbh. It was never going to be massive but that was a solid band of Melbourne supporters, so fair play to those who got there.

We still had to put up with the fake crowd noise on 7 though. That noise is so canned it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Correct! The noise was canned in the first half when I watched the replay at home. Hence my annoyance of the flogs behind me.

It was like being in a cinema with barely a ripple of noise in the first 40 mins of the game.

BT would have been in his element!

I don’t know why, but in these situations where there is a two on one, the umpires forget the rules and pay the mark.
Same as goal square shepherding, they let it slide.
Must be a directive as it’s not mentioned in the rule book

Only now getting a chance to watch the second half again. We did nothing short of blow Brisbane away really. I loved how we got both those third quarter goals of theirs back within 30 seconds.

In regards to the Sammy Weideman conversation it's probably time to just let it go and see how it plays out really. The way we're playing as a team means it's not a great concern in the scheme of things. There's no argument that his contests provide scoring opportunities for our smaller players but he's playing in a side where it's never been so good to be a key forward. I just worry that his misses from set shots will come back to bite us in much tighter games. I also feel for Ben Brown not having a chance to press his case at the moment. First world problems perhaps.

Watching it live it was a blatant free to Lever.

Watching the replay without the emotion, it was probably a 50-50.

They never pay a free for blocking if the player doesn't take their eyes off the ball. Hipwood took his eyes off the ball for a split second, but he probably disguised it well enough to get away with it.

Yet none of those teams went on to win the flag! Except 2021?

Let’s hope so. It’s incredibly hard to win a GF, all those teams listed gave themselves a massive chance for a preliminary final with the exception of the Cats in 2018 you could argue. Still a lot to play out, was more highlighting how hard we’ve worked as a group to give ourselves every possible chance.

Apologies if it has been mentioned already - but is anyone else still thinking about that amazing handball by Clarry that lead to  Sparrow's goal in Q4? It was out on the wing after the ultra intelligent highball by Salem, because we only had ANB vs 4 Lions ahead, that allowed enough time for Clarry to swoop in and give an amazing handball to ANB (who also did an amazing job to halve the contest), who then released to Trac, and... it was all over after that.

Just awesome. Awesome.

I've not yet watched the replay, but my initial impression was that at the last second he did a good job of making it appear as if he was looking to mark the ball on his chest. Cleary bogus because it was never going to get past the bloke who marked it but apparently enough to fool the umps.

Bizarre none of the commentators said so. In fact they praised hippwood

Did you see the half time spot with Lynch praising the blocking tactics?

I thought that the tactic was illegal?

Weid is kicking the ball exactly where he is walking in! It's bizarre that he his lining up between the boundary post and the goal post!

Maybe he has been listening to BT with BT's often ridiculous advice on where each player should aim.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
