Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Viney Tomlinson Langdon from best 22.

Lions missing Gardiner and … otherwise at full strength

I think Harmes on McCluggage is a good move.

J, Berry and Raynor both also injured and very good players

McLuggage had been in great form and has been playing more inside this year. I'd say around 50% inside mid and 50% wing.  Would be good to have Jordon on him all game and follow him on the wing and inside

With Langdon out this is as good as the team is going to get. There will be some interesting matchup and I would expect some quick moves of players depending on the contests.

Harmes to Zorko or Lyon for me. First up I would have him on Zorko to shut down his clearances. McCluggage to have Brayshaw with him if he lines up on the wing. Might give the inside job on him to Sparrow if he is damaging.

Would not be surprised if Robinson goes to Oliver.

Will watch the game with a close eye on how they line up.

Dees to win by 4 goals.

Right... not sure why i am bothering here, but...

An AFL player is always going to remember their debut game. It's a big deal. You would know no matter what that you were good enough to get to the highest level.

Your family would be present at the game... they would be so proud. Likely all your friends too... close or otherwise.

If you are the medical sub you might not actually get a game. All that build up and emotion for nothing... do you do it all again next week? Maybe... but it doesnt have the same feeling.

If you do come on... it means a teammate is injured which is a negative. The player might not get much game time. They might not even get a kick. This would be disastrous for a young player.

Plus... do you really want the sub to be a kid sitting on the bench full of nerves, unsure if he is going to come on? No. You dont. Clubs dont do this. I would be amazed if they named him.

In no way am I saying he doesnt deserve a game.

Should have won and had we, we'd have made finals.

I've been casting my mind back to the game. Pickett missed a soda handball to Langdon in the square, Bennell missed from 10m out, then in our final foray forward Hannan had Viney open inside 50 but went long, high and to the pocket, missed, went out on the full, then Fritsch gave away 50 by not giving the ball back.

Infuriating. Would love to win tomorrow just to feel better about last year.

Yep there were so many missed opportunities that game, I even remember Huddo’s call as Bennell streamed towards goal “this is why they got him he’s a great finisher, and he.....misses”. I feel like the biggest difference this year compared to last year is that we take those chances to manufacture goals.

Neale is too dangerous not to tag given the Lions create the majority of their scores from stoppage. Harmes goes to him. I've no doubt. If he can quell Neale, it might go a long way to winning the match.

Lyons and Zorko worry me too though, but I'm comfortable with Clarry and Trac going head to head with them.

If Zorko and Lyons are winning it, that'll bring McLuggage and Rich into it, so if they do win clearance, that post clearance pressure is going to be vital.

Are Brisbane tanking? How can you possibly win without your barometer? I was looking forward to Steven May putting beast mode into sleep mode.

Not optimistic about this one. Langdon is huge, not only the solid 20 possessions and 100’s of metres gained, but the assistance and bail out he provides the defenders.

It won't happen. Selection tells us everything about the mindset of the MC. We want continuity and simplicity. That means they'll keep the defensive structure as is. Pulling Hunt and Rivers out of the back 6 completely disrupts us and would be a bad coaching move IMO.

The second wing position will come from JJ, Melksham and Kozzy.

Then your pulling JJ out of the middle, and Kozzie out of his forward position and melksham  out of his mid to forward linking position.

Plus you are not losing anything at all if say a Hunt pushes up to the wing.

you still have a strong back 6 of May, Lever, Petty, Hibberd, Salem and Rivers.

Any way you look at it you have to move someone.

With Sparrow in we are one inside mid too heavy. Clearly the plan is to push one of the inside mids to the wing. If it wasn’t they would have brought in Baker.
My guess is Harmes on the wing in a run with role on McLuggage or JJ.

Yeah, but our game is based around protecting our back 6 and countering from there.

None of it is ideal, but shifting mids and forwards around is a lot more doable in our system I reckon.

In no way am I saying he doesnt deserve a game.

These are all valid points,

... But what if having Bowey as the sub is because he's our next best performed, the most ideal utility roleplayer to cover various positions, the fittest, the best decision maker, the most skilled and therefore the best pick of the bunch to help us get over the line, in the event of an injury? Purely from a tactical point of view.

I mean the coaching dept has already confirmed you are good enough to make it to the highest level if you are picked ahead of 22 or so other players on the list, in just your first year. And tbh id rather see what he can do at this stage, than have Baker as sub. If our best 22 is so hard to get into for another month, it makes sense to put the 23rd best player as sub, even if he's not used for a month, just in the event that he's ready to have an better impact on the game, than others who you're saying we should make subs purely because they've already debuted? It's not a compelling argument.

The kids a first round pick, I'm sure he has enough belief in himself and is chomping at the bit to get on the field and make an impact in any capacity. Maybe stepping up, when another goes down, is also a point of pride.

If he doesn't come on, we all know it wasn't his first game. It's merely an intangible statistical anomaly that the AFL just hasn't fixed yet. He will know his first game will be when he actually gets on the field via a sub or as listed in 22.

But having said all that, your points about family and the first game being major are all perfectly fine reasons to just debut him in the 22 instead when the time comes.

I don't know, depends on the player really. As i said, maybe he really wants to debut as 23rd man waiting to help out if someone is injured. We're a 10/1 team chock full of superstars and players all performing their role, you'd kill to just be cutting oranges for them at this stage. ?‍♂️

How good is it that our first and second rounders from the 2017-2019 drafts are all playing this match!

2017: Spargo, Fritsch and Petty

2018: Sparrow and Jordon

2019: Jackson, Koz and Rivers

That's a serious strike rate from JT!

I would run ANB on Langdons' wing

Knows the system has the tank and is making good decisions at the moment

Harmes on Neal and let them try to tag our best

Yeah, that would work actually. Good call.

In addition to having the tank and making good decisions, nibbler role is very similar to langdons, in so far as it involves lots of defensive running between the arcs, much it near the boundary.

In that scenario JJ stays in the middle and Captain Jack takes nibbler's role -  a position he has played so is familiar with.

Minimal change and captain Jack is not thrown to tbe wolves first up against a super midfield.

Only 1 shut down role - Harmes to Zorko.

Allow Brayshaw to play his natural game on McCluggage.

Hopefully down back we can see Hibbo on Cameron and Rivers on McCarthy so Salem can play on Ah chee which is a huge win for us.

I would have thought if Langdon were playing, he'd be on the same wing as McLuggage.  I've always thought Harmes was the player most like Langdon - that is an aerobic beast with moderate to good, but not sublime, disposal skills. Perhaps it makes sense, therefore, to play Harmes on McLuggage and Sparrow to take Harmes's lockdown role in the midfield.

Other way round IMO Hibbo on McCarthy ( taller consistent marking player) and Riv on Cameron as did job on minding smaller faster Weightman last week.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
