Yep

today was the first day of the NCAA season.

Baseball playoffs in early October and then NFL

All with full stadiums and not a mask to be seen.

Not sure what will be happening for indoor sports like basketball and ice hockey

I don't know if this has been brought up but what happens if WA is still locked up at the start of the next year's football season?

It appears that the government over there is talking about reopening the border next year and maybe around that time or later, would we just preclude Perth and Freo from the competition or would they have to stay over here in a hub, same with Queensland, I guess.

Their premier was talking about 90% not 80%, if they can't achieve that they won't open up and they seem disinclined to vaccinate over there. They don't give a [censored] about the National Plan, they will do what they want.

Maybe we won't have to trade for Cerra after all.

That's not really supported by the data which shows WA currently has 55.45% with a single injection and 36.26 fully vaccinated. This compares with Qld at 54.84/36.45, SA at 57.44/38.92 and NT 58.78/42.43. Nevertheless, and thankfully, all other States and the ACT are above 60% first dose.

So apart from Qld they are lagging behind all the other states.

I think that shows they are well behind NSW and Vic, so I guess that does support the data.

It isn't statistical but there are increasing reports that the WA system is under severe pressure without even a single covid case:  elective-surgery-postponed-wa-hospital: -

Elective surgery cancelled for a month, dramatic increase in ambulance 'ramping' hours and chronic underfunding of health system for several years.

So, I am of you view that the WA Premier has reasons to not vaccinate quickly and to keep upping the ante; the latest being 90%, an almost unachievable figure.. 

His latest is they open their borders in maybe March/April next year.  So every likelihood afl teams will still need to go over and quarantine.

The problem for the rest of us he makes it harder to reach a national figure of 70% or 80%.  Other states will need to go beyond those figures to compensate for WA vaccination shortfall.  

There are reports suggesting that Qld health system is also stretched.  Interestingly, they also have low vaccination rates.  I'm not sure they want the country to open borders either.

I also think that states with less Covid are seeing slower vaccinations uptake which makes sense. We have huge urgency in Victoria and NSW.

I agree. I think Victoria's vaccination rate started more slowly than it should have because of complacency (combined with hesitancy) when we were back in those donut days. Remember them?

The urgency isn't just around catching covid.  It is about opening our borders locally and internationally so people OS can come home, visit families, labour shortages can be filled, universities can ramp up their campuses with international students etc. etc etc 

The longer it takes WA to vaccinate and open borders the longer it will take the rest of the country to effectively open up.  McGowan is stretching the National Cabinet's agreed dates of Oct/November to March/April.

Do you think that the AFL and the teams will put up with that, it would be far easier to have the two WA sides come over here and go in to a hub.

With NSW and Victoria now well past COVID zero what's the issue with people coming here from OS?  They quarantine for 14 days and at worst a couple more cases get out.  I've got a mate who is stuck in NSW having gone to see his daughter and granddaughter and has been for the last 6 weeks or so.  It's costing him a fortune.  What's the issue if he comes to Victoria and isolates for 14 days? 

On the other hand I've got relations who are moving to WA permanently.  They've got permission to go there and leave in 3 days but a resident of Victoria can't get back in.

Can someone explain that?

Agreed  a hub over here would work.  But who knows.

absolutely correct but what politician wants to be seen as adding to the risk even if the risk is miniscule.

Many Malaysians work in Singapore due to better wages. When coming back from Singpaore to Malaysia they have to hotel quarantine for 14 days which most can't afford.

This is depite Singapore having 50 odd cases a day and Malaysia having twenty thousand. The world has gone mad.

I suspect WA will pay. McGowan just doesn't know it yet. And I don't mean WA will necessarily pay in cash. And it might not necessarily be the Government that pays. West Coast, which I keep hearing is the wealthiest club in the AFL, might find that it's Eagles wings are clipped in some way.

I hope you are right that a state can open up internationally when it reaches 80% regardless of other states.  I have a niece, her husband and two gorgeous little boys living in Hong Kong, who can't come home to visit.  Hotel quarantine just isn't feasible for boisterous 5 and 7 year olds.  

All along I've felt it is outrageous to lock Australians out of their home state.  Hope your mate gets back soon.

There may be some blow back if the AFL insists that the two clubs over there have to relocate here until the borders are open. I guess he cant keep the borders closed forever and once he does Covid will slip in. 

God only knows what Qld will do and they may have to relocate the Bears and Suns to NSW, that may not worry the locals as they don't really care about AFL anyway, but they sure as hell do in WA.

Two NFL teams now require fans to be vaccinated. I imagine the outcome will be the same here for season 2022, but whether it's made mandatory by the club, the venue manager or Government remains to be seen.
