Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Let's change the fact that MFC supporters don't go to Marvel.

We all know that the Doggies faithful will be there expecting to thrash us and given the umpiring result of having a majority Adelaide supporter crowd we need to have more than the usual MFC base supporters at Marvel. MCC/MFC members notoriously will not go to Marvel. This is a game where we need supporter noise not just to balance out umpiring decisions but the players thrive on it as well. We all need to be there.

Unable to join you longsuffering due to locale but great to see you having a crack at revving up the faithful!

Sorry Rusty but as far I’m concerned if Mitch Brown comes in, regardless of form, with all of our tall forwards available for selection then we may as well give up.

Either stick with Weid or bring Ben Brown in at Marvel. I know both were garbage this week but I just can’t see any silver lining in bringing Mitch in for the Bulldogs, especially given he hasn’t played a game this year.

edit: in fact I’d rather drop Weid and go with the forward structure we had at the start of the year.

Brown didn't do too bad at all against the Hawks Beetle and was the only tall who scored multiple goals over the weekend.  He also brought more heat at ground level against the Hawks than any of the others put together.

While it's pretty obvious he isn't a long term option, it wouldn't hurt to stretch the Doggies deep in defence where they are vulnerable.

Weid has had two chances for two fails.  You want to risk a third against equally the best team going at the moment?  Not for me thanks.  And BB didn't give a yelp against the Swans according to all reports and most unlikely he will get a call up.

Having said that i still think BB will be back and firing at some point and is the best of the bunch in the medium term.

Aside from that i agree with your last point as one option.  Go with the original set up up forward.  Two talls and four mediums/smalls feeding off them.

They don't have many weaknesses though and i am leaning towards the option of attempting to amplify that weakness by bringing in the extra tall up forward (Mitch) and three mediums/smalls.

Regardless, if neither of Salem or Viney return, i doubt we'll get the job done this week unless those who were too far off the level last week get back to some very good form ie., Maxy (some major blunders/poor decisions against Port which in the end cost us dearly), Spargo, Kozzie, Hunt, T-Mac, ANB, Jordan & Fritschkrieg (who had a mare).

IMO Jetta has to be dropped even if Salem's not fit. I know the VFL is on a five-day turnaround but I just don't think we can take Jetta into this game on a fast deck at Marvel against the Dogs and come out alive.

The stats don't really back this up too much.

At AFL level this season Brown's averaging 5.3 pressure acts per game to Weideman's 6 (i.e. less than one pressure act per game the difference), but importantly Weideman's averaging 3.5 defensive half pressure acts per game to Brown's 1. That's important because it shows Weideman is playing a different role to Brown and getting more ball up the ground away from the forward line. Taking the defensive half pressure acts out, Brown's averaging 4.3 forward half pressure acts per game to Weideman's 2.5 (just under 2 more per game).

Tackles is the same. Brown's only laid two tackles in three games but both in the forward 50. Weideman's laid 5 tackles but only 1 in the forward 50. Same with marks: Brown's averaging 3.3 marks per game to Weid's 4, but inside 50 Brown averages 2.3 to Weid's 1.

The way both have played this year, Brown offers us something different and IMO stronger in the forward half/50 than what Weideman offers.

Having said all that, it doesn't look like Brown played well in the VFL yesterday and I'm not a huge fan of players coming in without earning it (although to counter that counter argument, I don't think Brown should have been dropped in the first place).

Brown had 5 goals in three games. Weidemen has 1 in two games. He needs to kick 4 this week to break even. Only if they’re breaking even or thereabouts would I consider the pressure act stats you mention. I just want goals from those two!

Agree that Jetta should be dropped regardless of Salem’s fitness. Indeed, it’s not at all clear to me that Jetta is Salem’s replacement.

I’d like us to go with the high pressure game across the ground. I’m undecided on dropping Frisch or Weid and going with two permanent talls because IMO Frisch plays as a tall because he offers minimal pressure at ground level. Max and Jacko rotate as the other big option forward when not on the ball

Salem comes in for Jetta and if he’s not right I’d bring Lockhart in

Viney and Sparrow would be great but not sure Jack will get  up though

B.   Lever.        Petty        Hibberd

HB. Rivers         May          Salem

C.  Langdon    Oliver       Brayshaw

HF. Sparrow     Weid       Jackson

F.    Pickett       Trac       Spargo

R. Gawn, Trac, Viney

I/C. Jordon, Nibbler, Harmes, Hunt

Sub. Fritsch

I can’t resist, I know we’d like two Tracs, but I think TMac is ok at FF!

Be happily surprised if Viney gets up but think Fritsch survives!

Agree with rest of your sentiments with one exception Benny FF for Weid!! TMac CHF!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Weideman and Brown both don’t play and we go back to McDonald and Fritsch as our main targets.

The issue is Melksham should be dropped too so not sure who can come in to fill those spots.

BB and Weid don’t deserve a game based on their current form

Pointless playing guys in the hope they come good - both need a very big kick up the a$$ and start performing

Bring in Bedford for Melksham and get some real fwd pressure happening

agree we were too tall against the crows

Need to try and isolate whoever plays on Caleb Daniel. chances are he's going to end up on a Fritsch or Kozzie.

We need to play ANB on him. If he plays on Fritsch we are stuffed.

Don't know about that, Fritch will have height advantage and is great in the air. I admit when it comes to ground he'd beat Fritch but that's what our small forward are for.

I think we need a little perspective.

9-1 and if the OOB was paid we are probably 10-0 still.

Delivery to Fwd line was ordinary and yes a couple look tired.  no need to panic.

Salem in for jetta (easy); Viney (assuming fit) in for Jordan (just needs a recharge i think); Sparrow for Melk (just no pressure from him when needed - fair weather footballer)

I'm with Jaded. Aerially it would be a great match up but Daniels would carve us up if Fritsch was minding him. He creates so much of their play off the back half that we need to look at a defensive forward to sit on him.

Doggies have one key weakness in that they lack height down back. Richmond towelled them up with Lynch and Reiwoldt taking 19 marks between them. (11 inside 50s). Its their Achilles heel imo.

All this talk of forward pressure and tackling is great but if the ball hits the ground, their half backs of Daniel and Dale will continually rebound, despite our pressure which may or may not be there. Respect the strength and exploit the weakness imo.  Stretch them and get 10-12 scoring shots from marks/free kicks and we're a chance of kicking 100 points.  I dont trust Ben Brown to tackle, but i do trust him to draw 2 defenders, get free kicks, and create open leading lanes for others. I dont know what i trust Weeds to do in this regard unfor.

In, salem viney brown.

Out jetta, melksham, weed

And i'd definitely have someone playing a forward defensive role on Daniel. His ball use is first rate.

Neal-Bullen just to sit on him and make him accountable.

Melksham has shown a capacity to mind playmakers, and probably has the capacity to match Daniel on the ground/should beat him 1v1

Don't know about others but I'm fairly terrified by how quickly and efficiently the dogs move the ball at Etihad.

If this game were at the G then I understand how going taller and trying to expose their backline like Richmond did out in the elements on the larger ground makes sense.

Hoping we pick the team that can gives us the best chance to get our defensive structures together the quickest. Not sure if that would include BB or staying as tall as we've been. Its a delicate balance.

Depends how dodgy his ankle is. ANB is the team’s best runner, and should be able to stick with the little bugger all day.

Anyway, if Salem is unfit then it’s gotta be Lockhart (not Bowey) who replaces Jetta.

Not too sure of the Doggies match ups in our backline.

my guess is

May on Bruce

Petty on Naughton

Lever on resting ruck/intercepting

but the taller players at both ends are going to be a handful.

Naughton is an absolute freak.

This bloke laid Zero tackles against crows.

No way he deserves another game.

Hes not so elite to not have to tackle. If a player was kicking four goals every week then maybe he gets a no tackle pass.

Jake is not doing that. He cant be rewarded with another game if he simply wont tackle.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
