Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Sam Weideman re-signs until 2023

Actual article makes no mention of the four clubs. Assume one is Collingwood.

SAM WEIDEMAN (MELBOURNE)

Already clubs have started inquiring about Weideman’s services, with Collingwood believed to be one of a quartet to ask the question.

There is a chance Adam Tomlinson’s injury will clear space in the senior team for Weideman, but the Demons are just as likely to play Harry Petty in the third key back slot.

The romance of the Weideman name returning to the Pies is irresistible but they would need to offer a future pick or get back into the draft given they will be in points deficit with Nick Daicos. Weideman has kicked 14.6 in the last three weeks in the VFL and is too good for that standard, but the Demons definitely prioritised Ben Brown’s debut over his elevation. That would have to get him thinking about this future.

I'd be surprised if other clubs weren't looking at him.

As regards Collingwood, they need all their chips to pay for Daicos. They have nothing to trade with and no player we'd be interested in. They can gagf

It’s always been a lingering shadow that his family name would always lead to a romantic notion of a switch to the maggot infested Pies.  Sam has taken his time to develop as most young key position players do.

Sam clearly has the size and skill to be a key full forward.  His kicking is generally very accurate and he has a good conversion rate.

It’s his lack of a second effort and real desire and intensity that perhaps holds him back.  He can be a good mark but often gets out bodied by opponents in a contest.  One goal and one tackle on average in his 44 games in 5 years is hardly appealing.

If he is spell bound by the Pies and they offer him the $$$ and contract he wants, I don’t actually think they have the jewels we would ask for. I am not a fan of any of their list really. ( Perhaps Nathan Murphy and their 2022 first rounder??)

I mean he’s playing in the 2’s in his 5th year on the list. Regardless of the circumstances (and there are a few) that’s not a great look. You have to take your shot when it comes, and Weed probably hasn’t been consistent enough at AFL level. He won’t sign with anyone else in the next 6 months, so he has that time to make the decision for everyone. I hope he nails it, as his upside is huge - but he’s currently running on potential.

Lets be real, i rate Sam Weideman the talent, but he's never put consistent performances together at AFL level, and THAT, is the only reason he's not in the team now IMO, we want to see him doing it week in, week out for a block. and i reckon he'd be clear on that.

it'd be a real shame if he left, and i don't think he will, this is all just media stuff

There are those of us that believe he should be in the side before Brown. Anyway I would like to see them trial a tall forward line for a few weeks and make adjustments when necessary.

I think he is a better option than Brown right now and definitely in the future.

I whole heartedly agree. I think it will come into fruition.

I think Brown is going to have to really perform at a high level to keep his place. Not just bring the ball to ground for the smalls like many key talls are asked to do. He really should be taking contested marks consistently each week and having 4+ shots on goal.

I'm pretty sceptical. The club's going to give him every opportunity as its big off season signing but he hasn't strung good games of football for quite a while. I look forward to watching him in the flesh Saturday night. I felt like he was off the pace on the weekend which is understandable first game back in the seniors. But does anyone else feel that once he's competed in the air at the marking contest he just looks like he's moving in slow mode. Its like he's stunned from the marking contest impact or something.

I might be way off but there but there are worrying signs with his inability to get separation from his man when leading. I worry he's lost his first step pace which is crucial for his style of lead up play. Really hope I'm wrong!

I think Weid gives you more versatility, intensity at the contest and better tackling.

We shall see.

44 games in five seasons. He has to make an immediate impact and kick bags of goals if and when he returns to the side. He has not offered much different to what Mitch Brown offers.

5 years ago we could never have predicted we’d be in this bizarrely good situation, but as much as I love TMac and fully recognise he’s back in really good form, he’s ended up being the wildcard here that has created this abundance of key forwards. Jackson’s development as well has been better than what I think would’ve been predicted, it means we have plenty of talls but not enough spaces to play them.

Personally I thought Weid deserved to be promoted over Brown against the Kanags, I recognise that BBB was our big coup but Sam had better form and I think playing him over Brown would’ve really shown how much we rated him.

I would like us find a way we can hold onto him but realistically that would take one of TMac or Brown getting injured (knock on wood won’t happen!) or not performing for a period of a couple of weeks. Or Petty not performing in defence, forcing us to swing Tom back there.

Exactly, they have no capital and would need to trade players out just to get picks to use in any trade.

If Weideman cones to the club and says he wants to go to Collingwood I'm sure we'll make it happen but not sure what the Pies could offer other than future picks. They might be down for a few years so future picks might not be so bad I guess.

If he was fit rd 1 he would have played.

He is fit now play him and brown and Jackson in the forward line. Have TMac on the wing like he trained all summer with Petty KPD or play TMac KPD with whoever on the wing - just not Baker at this stage - not rating him at all right now, also not rating Petty either but he plays if TMac is on the wing.

At 7-0 now is the time to play around with team balance a bit, roll the dice and see what happens. I for one believe we will be better again with that set up. TMac can always rotate through stints forward to change the balance. Throw Jackson on a wing for a quarter here and there. Have BB weed and Jackson do ruck stints with Gawn one out in the square and swap him with petracca out the square - The only blokes whos magnets need to stay put are May lever Hibbo and rivers - keep them back. How good would coaching this team be right now - you could absolutely [censored] with every oppo coaches head and be confident it would work

He goes to someone who offers a top 5 pick if that is on offer I have no problem with him leaving. He has  played 10 serviceable games in his career and a couple of good games at this point. He is average. Get a top pick and let him go.

Not sure that glowing endorsement would net us a top 5 pick...

I thought he'd get the call up against North and was surprised we went with Brown. I don't think Brown being a big recruit has much to do with it, we did t pay a lot for him so at the end of the day if he is a depth player so be it. Weideman would be playing 1s now if he wasn't injured preseason and if TMac wasn't back to 2018 form.

I think he'll get a crack soon and when he does he'll stay in. He performed well last year particularly when he had TMac/jackson as the 2nd forward. Once those guys went down he struggled being the only tall option but I think he'll prove the doubters wrong. I've never seen a problem with his attack on the ball and he loves laying a crunching tackle as well.

I think the FD should stick to what they wanted to do when they constructed this list - TMac to a wing and if he can do it great, but Weideman is a better forward and Brown is better than both of them.

It’s laughable those that think Brown is the worst of the three.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
