Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

His confidenceis completely shot. Going off @RigidMiddleDigit small little training report on Weid barely touching the ball in the minor intra club match, it's fair to say he'll struggle to keep his spot.

I too held hope after his 2018 campaign that he'd become a really good key forward for us, but I don't think it'll be the case. I think he'll be at worse a Levi Gasboult type who'll still be a solid contributor at times, but nothing to write home about. Mind you Gasboult has gone on to still play 150 AFL games.

I think Weid needs to think whether a fresh start at another club will be much more beneficial for his own career sake. I would presume he's going through that thought process now, but right now, being OOC and possibly out of the team probably doesn't bode well for him. I know Goodwin did say a month ago he wanted Weid to stay but maybe behind closed doors its a different dialogue.

Speaking of key forwards, Essendon have found an absolute ripper in Harrison Jones. Took 5 contested marks yesterday and played like a guy that's played over 100 games.

This thread has 5 and a half new pages since the Pies game. Coincidence you reckon hey? There's also the 6 page thread about Ben Brown playing instead of Weid that was started after that game.

Haven't seen one thread started about our horrendous delivery in that game, or how our defence was a mess.

Not going to bother with the rest of your post, it's just another example of the ridiculous overreactions in this thread,

That is hardly surprising when did not get one kick and pressure little else.

Cannot understand why every other Club picks on their players when they haven't won any where near the number of GAMES that we have this year, and don't rake up the usual.

We keep up this crap and we will be the cause of a fissure appearing between the players

We are just helpful supporters, support like the players are doing with each other......and winning.

I struggle with your second last para. How does it affect players what is said on here? It is a serious question.

I would love nothing more than for Weid to find form and/or develop into a player that can kick bags of goals and prove all of us wrong. I get the delicacies of social media and not writing off young men but this is a fan's site and we should all feel comfortable in posting our beliefs and opinions. If we are way off the mark or over zealous in our views, I have no problems in being called out for it - we live by the sword and die by the sword ?.

My view on Weid is that in his 6 seasons of AFL and almost 50 games of footy there have been very few indications that he has the skill, belief or attitude to make it - i can only go by what i see on the tele so cannot say which one is at the heart of it.

For comparative purposes (i know how all you DL's love stats and comparisons) you only have to look at Eric Hipwood who was picked up in the same draft, 5 selections after Sam. The key stats are that he has played more than double the games and kicked more than triple the goals (should have been much more had he learned how to kick straight). I don't think Eric is anything super special. He is a good, tall, mobile forward but you could see in his first 1-2 seasons that he had the goods to cut it at AFL level and is worth almost 2 goals per game.

We refer to Sam's finals form as the potential he has, which has been the carrot being dangled before us all that has/had all of us accepting of Hogan's departure as nothing to be too concerned about.

Give him a solid 5 game block in the VFL and if he is kicking 4-5 games consistently and Brown is not impactful, then i'd give him one more crack. I do hope for the team, that we are not in this situation though.

We certainly tried to top up with talls in the 2015 draft. So far to no avail. Max King and Hullett were unfortunately busts.

This thread really is bringing out the worst in a lot of posters.

Just continual kicking of a young player rather than actually discussing footy.

He's 23. That's still young for a key forward, especially one who was already considered a 'project' by the club whom drafted him.

Gawn didn't become a consistently good player until his 7th season.

I certainly wouldn't be offering Weid up for trade unless he's desperate to leave, i don't think he's best 22 right now but i think he show's enough to persist a little while longer on the list if possible

I'd give him another year i reckon OD, mostly because i can't imagine we'd get enough in a trade to make it worth moving him, his value was a lot higher when we weren't giving him a game haha

I have for a long time thought he will never be better than a average KPF. But he is better than the last month and certainly the last game. However I firmly believe he would be better off at a new club now.  From watching his last game I suspect his confidence is zero and I have a gut feeling a lot of his team mates don’t trust him any longer and if they have another option to play through they take that option.

This would explain a lot of why he is never anywhere near the ball on the field... perhaps he is option number 3 or 4 behind Tmac, Fritsch and possibly even Kozzy and Spargo.

True but he showed enough in early seasons to suggest he was good enough. Most people seem to be hanging their hats on one game in 2018.

2 hours ago, whatwhat say what said:

trade him for ben simmons

Imagine how frustrating it would be to have a KPF on your team that the opposition intentionally give away a free kick to in the forward 50 because they know he'd miss it. So the oppo gives away 10-20 free kicks per game knowing half the opposition's inside 50s per game will be converted 10-20% of the time. Genuine winning strategy. AFL would kick up a stink and change the rules though. Maybe introduce a free kick limit inside 50 per quarter, and give away shot at goal square if you go over.

Hack-a-Ben!!

Ps how good are the NBA playoffs right now? Games 7s with incredible performances, rising teams like the Suns, Hawks.  all time classic games. Big Comebacks. Close finishes every day. Has been better than any neutral (non demon) footy so far this year with the ex player commentary that is a genuine turn off. Whereas their commentary is so professional.

Bring on the AFL finals already anyway.

Tim O’Brien from Hawthorn is a comparable example to Weid. Played 88 games since 2014. Stats almost the same. 9.8 kicks, I contested  mark and 1 goal a game. Only played one decent season and that was in 2017. Would we have him playing for us? I doubt it. Only getting a game because veteran Gunston is injured and hawks are clapped out. New boy Koschitzke in his first season  has already over taken him.

Here’s an interesting comparison. Take into account Watts played in a far worse side.

Jack Watts (50 games) 2009-2012.

Goals- 37.18
Contested Marks- 49
Avg Disp- 13
Tackles- 89

Sam Weideman (49 Games) 2016-2021.

Goals- 49.29
Contested Marks- 69
Avg Disp- 9
Tackles- 67

Weid doesn't have the mind to be a great player unfortunately, a massive confidence player who goes into his shell really quickly. Still reckon he has the upside & talent to become a good 2nd tall forward option, but if the Pies gave him a good offer I'd gladly be taking a 2nd rounder at this stage if he doesn't show something obvious in the back half of the year.

but you took watts first 4 years and compared to weids first 6 years

i realise you took the first 50 games for each, but same years of development would be better as you are using averages anyway

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
