Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

All of Brown’s games were played in wet or poor conditions for AFL footy (maybe a bit harsh on Tassie as I think it was an OK day for once there against North). Weideman has played every game bar 1 in perfect conditions for a tall forward and still clearly inferior to Brown statistically.
So Brown has kicked more goals in fewer games in poorer conditions, and has played about 5x as many good seasons as Weideman has played games.
Absolutely baffling. I wanted Weid gone after the Crows game, how he’s still here doing nothing a month on has me stumped. It would be like playing OMac ahead of May in 2019.

Turn it up. The North game gave us the rare sight of a crowd full of Tasmanians in T-shirts. The Carlton game had a shower at half time. The only one that was wet was the Sydney game - Brown's best performance for the year.

This is not a defence of Weed but I don't think your conditions based analysis stacks up

Next year maybe?

Tomlinson CHB: Petty FF/CHF. Petty did quite well up forward last year and he knows how to hang on to a mark! And he’s a big lad apparently quite able to take care of himself. (And further, he’s just 21or 22, still developing)!

Have been a big fan, but also lost me Monday.

IF they don't think BBB is an option, then Mitch Brown or even Majak would provide a better contest.

I think the Weid would benefit from signing a 3+ year contract to stay at Melbourne and establish his position as our key forward for the next 5 or more years.  I reckon the off field pressure of his contract isn't helping his on field performance and I think he will finish alot more of his work (contested marks, goal accuracy) without this added 'off-field' pressure.

I'm of the view that he's done reasonably well over the past 5 games, acknowledging he had a poor game v Collingwood, and is capable of being an excellent forward per last few home and away matches/finals in 2018.

To me the BBB vs Weid comparison at VFL level performance somewhat distorts the picture.  I think it's far more representative to look at their respective performances at senior level.

Weid: 5 games, 3 goals.  Drops marks all over the shop, doesn't get to the right places and sprays his set shots.  Limited track record of producing it at the top level.

BBB: 3 games, 5 goals.  Doesn't look 100% with the pace of the game or to have found chemistry within the team, but still holds marks and gets to the right spots.  Hardly looks like missing a set shot with signature cartoon style 100m run-up and set shot routine.  During the 2017, 2018 and 2019 home and away seasons Brown finished 3rd, 2nd and 2nd in the Coleman medal and kicked a combined total of 188 goals across 66 games, the most of any player in the AFL over that time period.  Best individual effort in a game 10 goals.

I known some of his VFL form has been underwhelming, but there are some players that don't perform as well at VFL level, compared to the seniors and perhaps BBB is one of those.  If there is a player we would want to be getting right and embedding into the team over the back half of the season for a serious run at finals the pointy end of the season it's BBB.

Ill relate a story I was dropped from the ones after kicking 2 goals and about 10 possesions in the early eighties in what was to become a premiership year in the Ammos. In the magoos I faired worse getting about 6 kicks for zero goals

Next week was back in the ones kicking 5 having a hand in 3 more and had about 20 possesions

Some blokes never cut it in ressies. In my case I didnt think I should have been dropped in the first place. Copped it though, BUT did nothing in the magoos to justify a recall but did. Played ( and dominated)the  following week in ones... as I itetated. GO FIGURE?

There are no clubs circling Weideman. Who the hell wants a KPF who cannot get double figure touches a game. If only he was worth something.

I know this is simplistic but you would have a player on the list until at least 2024 based on a handful of games 7 seasons prior?

Despite my disappointment with the Weeds game against the Woods, when I read some of the vitriolic comments on this thread I despair for mankind.

No-one deserves the garbage some of you post. Would you say these things about your own son or grandson ?

Be they  footballers or just young adults trying to get on in this difficult crazy world.

Not simply the best, simply disgraceful.

Decent sentiments Ernie but that’s the world we live in.

The problem Ernest is the FD keep playing him when he is clearly not an senior level talent. Not every high placed draftee makes it. He clearly won't, time for him to return to Casey and play out the year before moving on. Unfortunately criticism comes with the territory and will never change.

I like Chookrat comment.

Good time to offer him a low price 3 year category as our future KPF to play and develop at Casey until he is ready and one of TMac or BB go down.

On current form it is unlikely that any club will offer a big contract. He's really not showing any big time attributes. Needs much more development. Saw him in Sydney ran under the ball, ran to wrong spots, easily brushed aside. Bulk him up and get him to demand the ball through performance.

I would much rather have his spot on the list and salary free for someone who might have a future. Why keep someone who has proved he  cannot cut it at senior level.

Were  you at the game dpositive?  Because I think he has got himself to the point where the team mates ignore him just like they  did with Watts.  It is not easy to see on TV but I have the feeling they have zero confidence he will do anything with the ball and send the ball elsewhere.

Don't think he's proved anything yet. Too slight for FF. He has shown rucksack Ng talent similar to Jackson but Jackson is the real deal on baller. LJ would struggle holding down FF. BB has shown he can hold that position, slightly heavier, faster and experienced, he as proven that.

Yes was there and agree totally. But he did not always run to the correct delivery spot and I thought at some stages he was merely taking two defenders out of he action. Our midfielders did not seem to be delivering very well.

We we're close to the pickets Row G and could really only watch him at the Randwick end.

The whole game was a disaster. Was there with a swannies supporter who really wanted us to win and did have ademons hat on so took the comments of the Pies supporters with us. He felt we just did not handle the small ground. He sees a lot of games there and works for Zurich hence the keen support. He reckons  Forwards weren't running to wrong spots but our delivery was to the wrong spots.

couldnt see a lot of the action at the other end so was just bitterly disappointed after what had been a great visit to the beautiful city so not a complete waste.

I reckon the Sydney supporters don't know how to barrack and I have a lot more respect for the energy that the MCG cheer squad generate. It was difficult trying to inspire the players and the Pies supporterscertainly found voice once they hit the front. There were several Mark , ball, etc decisions that seemed to be  affected by the crowd roar. Our supporters were more spectators.

I tried to generate some support was only in one stand. Felt we lost it down the other end.

Good point OD I was yelling at the TV, why were we kicking wide to the pockets consistently? In contrast to our usual game plan. By the fourth quarter I was assuming we were going wide because we had zero confidence in our key forwards to even make a contest. All we needed was Weid and TMac for that matter to punch the ball! I cut TMac some slack as he has runs on the board and should have kicked 2 goals. So the real issue as you say a trust problem with our midfield delivering or not delivering to a key forward.

It used to do my head in years ago when Watts would be leading out on his own and the mids would ignore or not see and bomb it to a contest, always wondered if it was myopic or intentional.

I was there; early in the game ANB got a great hit up from Petracca and turned to see W hovering behind Moore with Darcy basically saying ‘this will be a 50/50 with me in a bad spot’ and ANB said ‘yeah, nah’ but you know what was most damning? Sam never demanded the footy and didn’t want the 50/50. He didn’t want it quick and early.

You can’t think like that. You have to think that I am going to even this contest and bring it down 25 out for Pickett and Spargo.

There were a few other frustrating moments but the team was down across the board so I assume the team is ready for a break.

We have such an opportunity to finish top 2 and ensure an MCG preliminary final - I am eager to see if the wilt or will themselves to realise that opportunity.

That is an interesting observation, not presenting ahead of the ball carrier. I witnessed it , at MCG, in our bad years when we would be in contention in the very odd game and see players forward of our ball carrier run to pick up an opposition player rather than run into space for the pass. Players unwilling to take a risk for whatever reason, it happens but as a team you can’t function successfully with that mindset. Time to move on with our forward line set up. As for Weid as I have said elsewhere, he has all the attributes to be a good intercept marking backman but we never tried him there. Darcy Moore was going to be a key forward but where is he now?

FWIW      I think a low price 2 year deal, go back to Casey, develop a bigger body, confidence, learn to give confidence. I cannot see any other team wanting him for what we would accept. He needs to grab marks, demand the ball, and given his kicks on goal a game ago   learn to kick goals. That will give his team mates confidence in him. Come back next year unless something extra ordinary happens.   He does have potential, its there somewhere.

Good in theory but haven't we been told how strong he's become?

I am not giving up on him but he needs to rethink his approach. While he has not been contributing a lot directly, 2 goals was his best haul and had he kicked straight it would have been three, until Monday he was creating contests and our smalls were roving to the spillages he was creating.

On Monday he made one strong spoil that ended with a goal to LJ but otherwise had little impact. I agree his game meant we were playing one short and he must be dropped for the Bombers. Nonetheless given he has limited if any trade value atm we should persist. We saw in 2018 that he can play but clearly something is missing. Given the age profile of our current forwards we may as well persist.

Having said that, the suggestion of Petty forward is not totally out of left field given his game up forward against the 'Dogs in 2019 when he marked almost everything that came his way and kicked three goals (I think).

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
