Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I’m still stunned, but actually realising I’m now following a serious team. We’ve all seen plenty of momentum builds and promising moments with waves of good form over the last 34 years with a couple of good September runs, but IMO not this.

This team is different seriously different and dare I say it they have a lot more improvement in the forward 50 with their finishing.

After watching the replay earlier I took the dog for a walk and on returning home had a quick chat with my neighbour ex Saint George Young, who said you don’t win flags in April, but geez they are very good. They are so hard at the contest, tackle with ferocity and just defend well all over the ground.

I said I’m not getting ahead of myself(trying to be humble) and he said no mate enjoy this they are going to get better they are tough, hungry, well organised, can play have some real star quality and the core are now 100+ games in

I felt good after a chat and it wasn’t just me thinking I’d seen something different since Round 1 this year which has built

I think I said last week that I felt like I was watching some else team. The Dees don't do this. This morning I woke up and my first thought was did I dream we won? Immediately grabbed my phone to ensure it was real. strange situation we find ourselves in PSD.

At the end of 2019 we recruited Langdon, Tomlinson to play on the wings as well as Jackson Pickett and Rivers.

There was criticism we made a mistake recruiting Tomlinson and after a few games in 2020 he was dropped but forward thinking turned him into a tall lockdown defender and the rest is history.

We may say 2019 was a poor year on the field but a great recruiting year off field.

We will never know who had the brain child move of Tomlinson but that person or persons should take a bow.

I feel dreadful this am. The Melbourne lads all pulled the pin on going to the game late on Friday so I stayed local and watched the local team play their one and only night game for the year (they got belted by 100 points). I wandered into the club rooms to watch our game, plenty of condescending Tigers fans saying they’ll run over us but we’re looking ok etc before the game. By half way through the 3rd it was jokes about the ski season being quiet this year and range rovers and never won any flags... ggeesss I enjoyed being very loud as we kept kicking goals.
I really shouldn’t have had the CC dry on the walk home and the glass of red watching the replay though... ouch.

I'm feeling your pain Cards. I spent most of the afternoon in a sake bar in Fitzroy followed by a couple of cheeky cocktails on the way to the ground. After the game it was back to The Tippler on Wellington Parade until they shut up shop at 1am. Messy.

As for those Richmond supporters you mention, as far as stereotypical fan profiling goes I'd sooner be known for the trappings of first world excess than their reduced cognitive ability.

he was a gun forward and a really nice guy

George is still a great guy, my oldest boy is a half decent player and George is a bit of a mentor to him, some really sound advice and just hits the kid with some good reality and perspective. Loves a beer a punt and to chat about the game

The perfect summary of where we are at.

When did he play? I can't recall his name.

Left Subiaco for the Saints after the 72 season and they broke a big Premiership drought in 73 under Ross Smith. I asked him if he regretted missing out on a flag and he said no Saints offer was handsome set him up well and he made so many great lifelong friends.

George aLso played state cricket for WA and A grade club cricket in Vic with Carlton.  Played at St Kilda til around 79/80 and played in the inaugural state of origin game in 77.

He came back player coach for Wembley A Grade Ammos. Was involved in the footy department at West Coast for a long period when they first entered the comp

Was at the G last night and just watched the replay.

Some observations;

Gawn is currently the best player in the competition.

Dogga is Jr Max. What a future!

Going to the football is a strangely calm experience. I have been to the last 3 games and have felt that we were always going to respond and wrest control back.

Richmond are a "tough" team. They really went after Pickett physically. Didn't work tho!

The fox commentary team know very little about football and the laws of the game.

That was Channel 7 commentary, there is no Fox commentary if there is C7 available.

Tomlinson played in just about every position on the field at GWS, many as a Centre Half back.

Wonder what it's going to take to get more numbers to our games.

The team literally cannot do any better or play a more attractive and hard-nosed brand of footy. 56k attendance is pretty disappointing all things considered (unbeaten, ANZAC eve, Jones 300th, our home game, Richmond being our biggest test of the year etc).

At best the crowd was 50-50 but i think there were more Richmond supporters from what I gathered?

Maybe i need to make peace with the fact that we will always be a small (albeit passionate) fan base.

We need sustained success to really bring the bigger crowds.

If you look at Jones' win loss ratio as an example, we can't really expect large crowds and membership until we're consistently winning year in year out.

It is happening now and it will be all that much sweeter for those that have endured supporting this club for the past 15 years or more.

You do  know that it was the highest crowd for the AFL this year don't you?

In fact it was the highest crowd for a sporting event anywhere in the world. Todays ANZAC day game is now higher.

And at nearly $200 for a family of 5 plus transport/parking and/or something to eat and drink you are wondering why more don't go to the footy?

I can't help you.

Good, so it should have been. Given that list of reasons i stated that's a no brainer. Still doesn't mean there shouldn't have been an even bigger showing with nearly 30k tix still available.

so with 45k+ members already paid up, a portion of MCC members that aren't dual members which doesn't count to that tally- the moot point that everyone needs to drop $200 to go to the footy doesn't apply here.

Need to keep things in perspective - until today's Collingwood Essendon game - last night was the biggest crowd since the 2019 GF.  Covid is still having an impact.  I flew down from Canberra to watch the game, but travel isn't what it was two years ago - there are a lot of reasons why it's hard to draw bigger crowds ATM - including all the contact tracing and other issues compared to just rocking up to the game and buying a ticket at the ground.

One of the most brutal suffocating performances I've seen from this football club in a long time. We came with a plan and executed perfectly. Out coached an all time great, stood up to every attempt of physical bullying and lastly, we tooled them in pretty much every statistic.

The thing I still can't get my head around is the mental side, how have we managed to turn this around so quickly? I don't how how but I also don't care the fact is they have so far and I'm loving it. I am so proud of this footy club right now with the wat challenges come and we dont go to water, the keyword is 'calm'. Its about focusing on what we are right now and not what we've been, we are on the way back to where we thought we should be and the improvement has come from many areas.

Petracca is a bonafide big time player now and you can see he relishes the big stage. I did have Salem BOG personally but hardky disappointed with that choice. Tom Mcdonald's last 3 games have impressed me to no end, his work rate and ability to keep presenting is a massive part of all this. Spargo, ANB, Kozzy with their relentless 2nd, 3rd, 4th efforts. Throw Jackson into that as well, man this kid has a few clubs in the bag! Did I see a hitout from Gawn to him at one stage?

This is coming close to the best backline I've seen from Melbourne. You feel very confident when you see a high flying ball and Lever positioning under it. Tomlinson playing his role perfectly (yes I was one of his doubters), he's found j is niche. Just on that I saw him on the Sunday footy show and he's a exceptionally well spoken lad!

Hibbo tagged Dusty out of the game until his injury another great move. I thought Gawn started slow but really grew as the gane went on.

How about our 2nd 300 gamer? Has a defined job and does it well, pretty safe in the team for now I would say. I look at Jayden Hunt who was pretty much an expert in dashing and belting the cover off the ball, this guy is seriously playing to his strengths and i lpve the way he is timing his runs off the ball to get the quick handball. Bravo Jayden.

I haven't fully seen what happened yet in the Pickett scenario but free kick or not I was so proud to see our boys over there in a flash. Huge contrast to games last year where no-one got around anyone.

I could go on forever but we'll leave it at that. It's nice to have some more stable post match posts! far cry from the borderline losing my mind posts from late last season. Lid is off until tomorrow for me, going to enjoy the heck out of this for the remainder of the weekend which is T-minus something amount of hours.

Go Dees!

I'm a touch disappointed too. 78,000 today when both sides were in the bottom 4. 22,000 less last night when both sides were around top 4.

Part of that will be the drop off from the rain: I'm confident people who were thinking of going, particularly those who had cashed in a $0 ticket (i.e. members) decided not to go when it rained precisely as they had to make their call.

But only a touch disappointed. Today aside, most crowds this year have been below expectations. Whether it's the COVID effect or the AFL's woeful focus on "fan activation" with all the music etc. at games, we're not the only club struggling with attendances.

I was looking down at Kossie for the full lead up to the incident. I was surprised a free wasn’t called well before it got out of hand as the umpire was looking. Basically Kossie was trying to create some leads and Mansell was pretty much retrying to rag doll him with scragging and hanging on, no matter which way Kossie tried to run. Went on for a full 20 seconds or so. Eventually Kossie just took the bait and it started.

Probably worthy of it's own thread.

Who is replacing Burgess. We need that person recruited sooner than later to get a decent handover from him.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
