Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Pickett2jackson is usually pretty good but that post was a shocker. I rate all our opponents except Norf and I especially rate Richmond who are a top 4 side with us, Bulldogs and Port.

Eagles v Cats will be a belter this week.

Still consider (an injury free) Eagles to be a flag threat and one of the reasons why we need to keep winning. We need to avoid the Eagles in Perf come finals time.

Forgot about the forecast. If it’s wet then 2 talls is enough. Need more ground ball pressure.

Be interesting to see how our defensive system holds up if it is wet. Richmond will be very dangerous in the rain in their forward half. It also means whoever can be cleaner off half back might just win it.

I'm tipping the Tigers will be "up" for this game.

That's why a victory will be a watershed moment for the cub.

I was looking at some stats and although Luke Jackson is doing a great job in the ruck as a ff has kicked one goal for five games.

Is this accurate and is it enough?

He is getting the ball to ground and helping Max win games but at this rate will be lucky to kick five goals for the year if he plays a full season.

Needs to hit the scoreboard a lot more.

If you think this is THE important metric - it is helpful to think about the advantage he give to the team beyond his goal scoring or current lack thereof.

He is 19 for gods sake.... 19, he is 19, nineteen years old

So, anyway he is 19, 19 years old and he is helping the team you love win games and are currently sitting 5-0, due to the way that he plays the game, spreads the opposition backmen, and also by the way he doesnt score goals. Did I mention we are 5-0 with a range of goal scorers who are coming in to play due to how he plays the game.

If I think about it really hard - he is 19 and whilst he is 19 - he could have scored a minimum 5 more goals more, than he currently has, due to the fact that he is 19, and the fact that TMAC kicked a goal that was his last week in the goal square, and that Petracca kicked a goal the week prior (the first for the game) due to a sublime palm down in to his path.. and 3 more for good measure.

So going on that rate - as a 19 year old - he would have 6 goals in 5 games... 6 goals for a 19 year old - so by the end of round 20 he would have 24.

Does that change how he is seen?

I think we get it.  He's 19 yo, developing and he has tallent ;-)

That all said, his kicking still needs considerable development.  He's a pretty ordanary shot for goal so far this season and it's also fairly obvious neither he or his team mates have alot of confidence in his his feild kicking as almost every time he has a possession from a mark/free-kick type situation he dishes off a hand pass to a team mate around the back.

This is all ok, because he is only 19 yo, extremely agile and mobile, we haven't had any better options to this point  we are winning and getting the development into him is a big bonus.

I personally still think he's probably the weakest link big man in the side at the moment and sooner or later we'll bring in Weid or BBB to replace him, which won't necessarily be a bad thing, because he's still young, probably somewhat physically underdeveloped and it's a long season.  I suspect Tommy Mac will end up giving Max a chop out in the ruck.

Yep. True. It's a big decision - another week to distinguish between the two is probably the right call.

There's even the possibility that 1 extra tall is too many and the only way in for Weid or Brown is through TMac or Jacko.

As an aside, I'd have loved to have seen Bedford (or even Chandler) in for Melksham.

Just about the best second ruck in the comp and he makes Max a more effective player.

I think you have points with the parts of your post I deleted about Jackson’s kicking being sub-par (although not many rucks are great kicks).

Unless Jackson really starts to labour and his form falls off a cliff, I can’t see him being the one who makes way in the name of team balance.

I think the coaches are in love with the tactical flexibility he provides. 100% Ben Brown and Weideman are better forwards than Jackson but Jackson bringing the ball is providing a contest even though he’s not kicking the goals - that’s critical to enable Pickett and Spargo to go to work. Either of Ben Brown, Weideman or McDonald can do a job in the ruck to spell Gawn, but only Jackson can completely change the ruck and midfield dynamics when he goes in there. Given Brown’s knee troubles they may not want to risk throwing him in the ruck either because that invites the additional front-on knee contact.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jackson remain in the team a bit further up the ground on a flank once one or both of Ben Brown and Weideman are in as he has the agility to do that.

Another option to squeeze so many talls in is to further exploit Langdon, May, Lever and Tomlinson’s ability to play near 100% game time and have one of the talls on the bench at any time. West Coast had years they consistently played Naitanui at around 60% game time albeit due to his lack of endurance rather than a way to jam more talls in - but the result is similar with West Coast often forced to get another tall into the team to accomodate Naitanui who provided them a huge tactical advantage in bursts.

McDonald is the one under the pump in my eyes as he’s not kicked a bag of goals for years now, has poor field kicking, poor agility, and his legendary endurance doesn’t seem to be what it once was either. In good form right now though.

These are all great problems to have, a couple of injuries or a couple of these talls struggling form wise and it will be back to the panic of just before the start of the season.

Thrilled with the selections. past MFC teams would have made wholesale changes, jumped on bringing the big guns in and upset the balance.

we've opted for 2 genuine upgrades and bought in 2 absolute guns. bring on the Tigers. they'll be bloody hard to beat on the big stage, but i think we're a bloody good side this year, so game on.

as other have mentioned. so happy for T'Mac. he's playing his role perfectly and i can't help but feel like a bag is coming. he's getting his hands to a lot and just not quite clunking them, but i reckon it's coming. same with Jackson.

The implication though is that the current balance is enough to get a win, which may or may not be the case. Weid/Brown clunking a few and kicking 3 or 4 could actually be a defining factor or difference in getting a win over what we've put on the park the last 5 weeks. provided one is fit enough to come in.

If Richmond limit us to 15-20 or so shots in a defensive struggle, Tmac kicks 1 or less and Fritsch misses a few gettables in the pockets, well then I'd say it will have been a mistake to not bring one of them in.

Nitpicking though. Perhaps FD would've made the big call if we were 2/3 and desperate. 5-0 allows you the luxury of longer term thinking. Not to say we will be gunning for a win any less.

That’s what I think.

Otherwise I can’t understand how you keep a young key forward out, who has kicked 7 in the VFL the week before.

I think we are more balanced and dangerous with another key forward.

7 goals was a great return, but lets be honest, Box Hill were listless.

Still... i think Brown and Weid are part of our best 22 and its a big call to keep Mitch Brown in the team when both are looking good enough to play.

Reminds me of Allen Iversons famous “It’s just practice” rant

I’m fully on board with you EO. 200cm, 14 game, 19 year olds should be exempt from criticism particularly when they are as wonderfully exciting as Luke. None of us know where he will end up or how good he will be. We should just sit back and enjoy the ride. We have a special talent on our hands

I thought he did some lovely long kicks into the F50 a few times... so I also just checked the stats on the AFLPRO and he is going at 60/40 handball to kick ratio, and the main point with that, is that I dispute that neither he or his team mates have confidence in his kicking.

I think @Lampers nails it with his quote around the flexibility the he provides for our team and also the difficulty as a match up for opponents.

Great to get May and Fritta back. Fritsch being available was the unexpected that meant we did the right thing and did not bring in either of BBB or Weid. Why would you change the team structure when 5-0? Honour the players doing their job and playing their that got us here. Form lapse and injuries will occur and create chances at some point. Jackson whilst a key forward/ruck may not be kicking goals but he rarely lose an aerial contest and usually brings the ball down to a dangerous spot for our mids and smalls. The flexibility his role and athleticism gives us is one of the key reasons for our form and in particular our ability to MAXimise Gawn in varying ways.

I love the passion but every team that has won a premiership has achieved something amazing. They don't win it on one day and in many cases, it's years of work. Trivialising that is ludicrous.

For some reason, I really like Chris Scott. He's my favourite coach - he's not a likeable sort of character in the mold of Neale Daniher or Chris Fagan but he's measured without being robotic.

Also, you really sense the passion for his team and a desire to protect them.

Although I disagree with your post on a couple of counts, it's hard not see a similar passion in your words and let's be honest, if we all played a straight bat, this forum would be pretty boring.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
