Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Kate Roffey Set to Become President of the MFC

I guess the PC point was asked and answered.

This is allegedlyb as much about advancing the role of women , as it is about Melbourne Football Club.

We all live in the 21st century.   l am more than supportive of choosing the best person for the job.  The article or agenda did not need saying that it is about women.

I think Kate earned this gig on her merit. That is how it should have been described.

Gender should have had nothing to do with it,  however,  for the Board, they too can now tick that Social Justice box.

If we can find a home and win a flag,  l would applaud anyone in the leadership of the club to get that done.

For now,  l simply say good luck to Kate Roffey on her appointment and good luck to MFC. This is about achieving success.

Oh for [censored] sake

Don't like gender equality?  Women deserve the same opportunities as men, in fact they need to work even harder to gain the same respect.   Typical misogynist response to positive news.

I will be glad when this becomes the norm in society, and the person whether male or female is best credentialed for the job.  Sexism is an ugly thing. See and hear way too much of it, especially in footy.   Rant over!

Good luck Kate!

In the current climate of course her appointment will have an element of being “about woman”.  Remember woman have been playing second fiddle to a lot of seriously incompetent men for a long long time. She sounds like a good operator and that’s what we need.

Other Board members would have known what she stood for and in choosing her have endorsed the goals she has laid out.

Impressively, our Board managed to pull off a 'bloodless coup' when success is on the horizon.

We don't know the reason for ousting Bartlett but they must have had a good reason to change.

We need to trust their decisions.

Does it really?  You must live on a completely different planet Earth to me. Maybe the last 10-20 years it has improved for women but by no means does it exist.  Why did you have the response you did then, try explaining?

Roffeys job is to help deliver us a flag not campaign for non existent causes.

It looks to me helping deliver a flag is a top priority.  From the article: 'While Kate Roffey wants to do all she can to lead the Demons to premierships and off-field stability, the new Melbourne president spoke passionately on Monday morning about pushing for equality on a number of issues'.  'Roffey ...said another priority was to secure a home base for the Demons...'

There is no reason why she and her Board cannot have more than one goal.

Let's not judge her based on one article. I am sure she was asked a lot of questions about MFC etc and then asked about women in footy and business and equality and rightly gave her opinion.  Then the more interesting headline is used

Are you talking about women in China, Middle East and India?    Because they have it bad.  Real bad.

As for Australia and the west you are living in fantasy land if you think there's gender inequality here.

Equality means equal for both parties.  It is better in some places in the world, but i think you are so far off the mark here it just screams ignorance and male entitlement.   i might need a reality check and live in fantasy land as you put it, but i would say you need to delve a bit deeper and look within yourself.

You still did not answer why you reacted in such a way?

Ummm, not to derail this conversation, but no you are incorrect there is ‘more equity’ but there is not gender equality here or in most western societies, but don’t worry there are going to be several more people explain that to you in the next few posts I assure you ?

Nothing from/gy the club yet, od.  This article we-have-got-to-be-better-equality-key-to-roffey-s-melbourne-presidency is based on an interview on the ABC.

Listen to the interview on the link in here: melbourne-football-club-kate-roffey

Having now listened to the whole interview, the 'equality for all subject' is one of quite a number of goals.  Just shows the earlier tweet failed to present a balanced report of the interview.

I have no issue with our club making a stand on issues affecting society in the slightest. I don't view it as virtue signalling (though I hate that term because of how it is being applied today) as empowering others and viewing society as one of genuine transaction makes us and our communities stronger. No man, woman, nor organization, is an island. We function in a vast ecosystem of businesses, community organizations, NGO's, political parties, neighborhoods, city councils and competing sports. If we think we can somehow become great by currying favor by myopically focusing on a demographic that served us well in the 1950's while not realizing societally has fundamentally changed, we will remain stuck in the stifling cloud of self defeating fogeyism that has defined and burdened the club for a long period of time. It's resulted in a hollowing out of our support base as people view us as interesting as eating a meal of saw dust and onions.
I think @Lucifer's Hero summed up pretty well that you can have more than one set of priorities. I would also say that having complementary goals besides winning football games actually makes the club stronger.
I remember a great anecdote from 2015 in the age when Essendon held their AGM at the time. During question time, one of their members started venting their spleen over what had happened to the club. He raised a great point in that compared to the early 90's when the club was at it's zenith, it had a raisoon d'etre of winning matches, but it also had a social conscience: in particular Kevin Sheedy promoting indigenous and Black footballers.  It would be fair to say that they reaped a pretty good harvest out of that: Michael Long, Gavin Wanganeen, Dean Rioli, Derek Kickett, Che Cockatoo-Collins and many more.
He pointed out that the club no longer had a values based approach to doing business and operated in a mercenary manner. While it's hard to draw a direct line between having values and success (and clubs could go too far and prioritize either too much to the expense of the other), clubs without a moral core tend to get involved in shady stuff as we have seen. If all you care about is winning without morality,  I dare say that you create a moral vaccuum. I'd politely request that we look at the years of 2009 to 2013 when we threw our values out the window by pursuing tanking and ask how that worked out. Ditto with Essendon from 2012 onwards.
When we began reaching out to multicultural and Asian communities in 2018 in an authentic way, we saw crowds of 90K at the G for our two finals. PJ mentioned in subsequent interviews that he was delighted to see many non-white faces in the crowd and that got us those crowds. For me, speaking to constituencies besides those we have traditionally and insularly boxed ourselves into doesn't just help strengthen society, but makes us a stronger club.
On a personal front, I guess it also comes down to aesthetics. Does one believe in the idea that we are our brothers and sisters' keepers and that society works best when we work together and all have a chance? Or does one believe in Ayn Randian style individualism that most of us grow out of after high school, or Hobbesian pessimism (mixed in with the Marquis De Sade's particular philosophy for some)? I endorse the former ideals. Hence, I have no issue with Roffey saying what she has.

The fact you're nuffing out over a woman president talking about equality is proof enough.

Just because you dont experience or see gender inequality in your own life doesnt mean it doesnt happen.

Ah right, so we have equality across the board now do we? Job done, case closed yeah?

A worthy female succeeding in a traditionally male-dominated world often brings out the worst in fragile males who refuse to acknowledge that there's still quite a ways to go with gender equality in this country. I guess you haven't been watching the news lately hey? Look at our parliament ffs. You are making yourself a fantastic example of that fragile ego in this thread.

It seems odd that we have had no press conf, press release nor member email to announce the appointment.

Tom Morris who leaked the story of Bartlett standing down seems to have gone to ground.  And the Pert email he thought had been sent on Saturday night doesn't seem to have existed or he was misinformed.

Wouldn't mind seeing something official from mfc on Kate's appointment.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
