In Max’s circumstances he should always ‘aim’ for the right peg. Maybe he should consider old “Chicken Legs” as his personal goal kicking coach. Seemed to be all over it from the commentary box. That being said, have seen Max kick a super checkside goal on the run from the boundary at Mararra. Using the non-preferred hoof facing down field! Pressure was off of course,  practice shenanigans.

Skills and techniques learnt under pressure will apply even when there is no wind.

He said in his interview with Harford and co recently that when he aims right, he misses to the right.

I expect that if there was an easy and obvious fix to his goal kicking, he’d have easily and obviously fixed it ages ago.

You change how you drop the footy and your cadence to kick the footy.

Yes Maxie’s Massive ball drop doesn’t help, provides plenty of opportunity for deviation off the perpendicular or other arcane voodoo to kick in.

It's great that these kids can just work on developing their games without being thrown to the wolves if senior footy before they're ready. Such a change from where we've been for a long time

You learn how to control the ball drop and how be balanced for the kick. These techniques apply in all conditions.

Nev is holding his spot because of the renewed prominence of 1v1s.

I reckon this is an area where we are ahead of the curve. Our back half is full of guys who can win those contests.

Yes, having guys that can pick apart teams with great kicking is important but, dare I say it, perhaps slightly less important with the field being somewhat less congested.

The standard of goal kicking is poor across the league no matter what the conditions.

I saw a clip of Ross Lyon recently discussing this. Said the players need to take more responsibility for their technique. They need to practice more in their own time as there in not enough time during alotted training sessions to properly hone this skill. I’ve seen players out and about training at various spots around my locality over the years. Never once have they been practicing goal kicking.

I’m no expert and will defer to more knowledgeable posters but I would have thought that there are fundamentals of technique that apply no matter what the circumstances which you adjust to account for whatever the conditions are on gameday.

He hits most of his warm up kicks. Not sure it's technique that's his problem, seems to be mental

This is half right. They should practice goal kicking in the wind. They should also practice it in the calm.

The learning of the technique and the refining of the skill should be done in ideal conditions. Not when under fire.

They can learn more advanced skills (like kicking in the wind) when they've got the basics down reliably.

If you teach a man to swim by throwing him into the deep end of a pool, he may learn to freestyle but more likely he'll learn to dog paddle, and from then on, that's his default swimming style when under pressure.

Max should learn to kick to the left and to the right so he knows what the difference feels like. Once he knows that, kicking it straight is a lot easier than when you're guessing.

I've got a question about this for Ross;

If you spent 15 minutes each training session doing proper goal kicking practice, would you benefit more from better conversion with the shots you already get or would the 15 minutes doing other [censored] that equates to perhaps one more shot on goal be more beneficial?

I would think if you get 20 shots on goal each game and that is ultimately the defining factor in who wins or loses, it is the highest priority item for any coach. 

Wonder how many shots at the sticks an NRL or NFL kicker has each week?

How many penalty kicks would soccer players take during training?

How many free throws do basketball players take a week?
