Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I kind of agree 'Macca', but those poor decisions were the icing on the cake and put a dampener on the night for me.

If Brisbane had of won it would have been a steal.

Fagan was part of the problem (needs to rip into himself), he was badly out coached by Scott all night and capped it off beautifully by allowing a rookie to contest Hawkins 20 out from goal in the dying stages that resulted in a goal.

The game was played on Geelong's terms and the Lions never got any quick ball movement going...yes it's a bit harder on the narrow Kardinia Park oval but they (Lions) didn't even try to break the game open.

They got back into it with a couple of individual efforts (McLugage) and some tired old Cat legs...

On tonights showing I'm not sure either of these teams are a threat this season.

If we had have served up that tripe that Brisbane showed in the first quarter and a half we'd be furious

That's where they lost the game ... simple as that.  They then played catch-up for for the rest of the game and made it hard for themselves

Soft & insipid.  They weren't switched on.  Too little, too late.

Are they drinking their own bathwater?

Mind you, our team has it all before them and we've got a lot to prove

It's big league pro footy and you've got to be ready from the get-go.  Otherwise you run the risk of getting a howler.

Take the luck out of it

Losers whinge and the winners get on with it

And clearly at Geelong if you are the Cats coach, you are allowed to approach the other team and incite them. What would have happened if one of the Lions had a go at him. Great look for Junior coaches watching. Go and abuse the other team. No guts AFL will do nothing.

Agree 'Red' and interestingly one of the commentators said when Scott approached the umps last year an expected please explain was not forthcoming from the AFL.

Remind me...who runs the AFL footy department? and who did he play for?

mmmm

Yes it's a conspiracy theory but in all honesty they need to be seen to do the right thing and they don't.

Is it any wonder fans don't trust the AFL to do the right thing.

Scott should be hauled over the coals for this...

...by the way, I was hoping a player did go up and get in his face and then see his reaction.

Sure Macca, let’s take the luck out of it. The Brisbane player executed a tackle that led to the Geelong player incorrectly disposing of the ball. That’s a skill that, within the rules of the game, should be a free kick. Nothing to do with luck. An umpire decided the game there and then.

Brisbane had there chances in the 1st half. Hipwood missed an easy one from in front. But why the hell did Selwood get that 50 in the final term? But that Blicasvs incident was incorrect disposal. That is paid every day of the week.

But also what the hell was that Brisbane player thinking at the end with that final kick? Why an earth would you go to the boundary line. Centre it and if it gets punched through at least it would have been a draw.

Sick of umpiring impacting the outcome of games so much!

It’s actually quite rare that a decision/s really changes the result of a game.

The famous Adelaide - Fitzroy match at Footy Park in 1991 is one that sticks out.

But given the blatant nature of the free, its proximity to goal, and the time left on the clock, it’s safe to say that tonight was definitely another.

Will be interesting to see how the AFL and umps try to spin this one; they’ll be loathe to admit a mistake which cost a game.

I'm not denying it wasn't a poor decision ... of course it was.  I'd just prefer to look at the big picture rather than isolated moments.  Besides which, the umpire might not have had a clear view of the incident

But that poor decision is not the prime reason that the Lions lost the game

Did you watch the game?

If so, let us know your evaluation of Brisbane's first quarter and a half.

Don't hold back either.  A proper evaluation.

Most here have acknowledged that the Lions were really poor in the first half

Now, if they had have come out of the blocks as they should have,  that last decision wouldn't have had any consequences.

By the way, Fagan has just said that he is not concerned about that non decision ... good on him.  Otherwise he gives his players an out

The Lions blew it in the first half GV

We meet them in Alice Springs mid season so here's hoping they don't turn up again

It wasn't a great standard tonight.  Neither team took on the corridor enough.  Both teams played cute.

Neither team can finish top 4 if that's what they're going to serve up.  Dangerfield & Cameron might make a difference but Fagan has some work on his hands with Brisbane

Yes it does, read the rules.

However in this instance I believe he did have prior opportunity.

He definitely had prior... he’d taken the ball and spun around in an effort to get away, was caught and dropped the ball like a hot potato. But worse than that was the fact that at the point where he let the ball go, the umpire had a direct line of vision and could not have missed the infringement. Bizarre!

The thing that annoys me the most is that umpires seem to adjudicate the game differently in the last few minutes of a close game which is wrong. This thing about putting the whistle in their pocket or sock  is stupid. They should pay the obvious decisions as if it was in the 1st quarter. Doesn't matter how many time the LIons had chances. The FACT is this umpire made a huge mistake and cost the Lions the game. He should be sent back to the bush as happened in the old days

It was a poor decision but the result of a game is decided over 120 minutes (or whatever it is these days)

I counted at least 12 questionable decisions by the umpires but also noted numerous poor decisions by the players themselves.  50+ poor decisions by players on both sides .. wrong options taken left, right & centre

That includes a soft approach by a stack of Lions players in the first half.  2nd to the ball, playing from behind etc etc.

If you were the coach (Fagan) you'd be ropable.  Scott shouldn't be too pleased either ... when Brisbane finally got their act together the Cats went to pieces

If we're fair dinkum (and finals bound) we need to be able to defeat both Geelong & Brisbane (based on what we witnessed tonight)

He definitely had prior, chose to spin to take the tackler on there’s nothing more obvious. I imagine the umpire thought he got a clean disposal.

Clear mistake by the umpire but the lions had their chances, actually mirrored a lot of our game against them last year where we pumped it in 3-4 times in the last few minutes but stuffed it up. I didn’t watch any of the game, just the closing stages in the highlights but it would’ve been really enjoyable to have the cats start 0-2 after giving up a big early lead.

Lions could end up with a Melbourne-2019-like  season if they don’t get a wriggle on.

The other thing is, is it such a bad result for us that Brisbane lost?

If we're to feature in the finals we not only have to play well ourselves but we need teams above us to fall away.

And the Cats will be lucky to get past the Hawks next week and then they meet us.  The Lions next 2 ... Pies & Doggies.  No guaranteed win there

All things considered, tonight's result could work in our favour

Looks like Geelong will make 'roughing up champion players' their 'one-wood'.  Hope our players protect Oliver and Petracca, Geelong's likely targets, more than the Lions did Neale.  They let him down badly in the first half.

Whaaaaat? Not favouring Throwlong? You must be trolling.

Seems I put the mozz on the umpires!

My remark was in response to the frees the Brisbane forwards were getting. Not normally given down there.

I think blatant throwing started after my post. Selwood goal was a throw, no doubt.

Didn’t bother watching the last quarter but judging by the rest of this thread it seems there were some more  controversial decisions.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
