I remember 10 years ago we had all these supposed match winners and no one to win the ball.  Didnt work out too well for us then.  I think Oliver's skillset is essential from a team balance, however at a price.  Hawthorn and Geelong players sacrified $$ for success - im watching with interest

This is exactly the point, he’s a very even contributor and gets plenty of attention, but from an opposition point of view he would not be the one they want to stop. I think it would currently be Trac, Gawn, May and/or Lever then Oliver. He was rated our 5th best yesterday in the match report, so even they thought a lot of his 35 touches weren’t great or important.

There will be days in the future when  Clarry will get his disposal at a genuine 80% or more.

BTW when he kicked on Sat he did a mountain of damage fur to the speed accuracy and low flight left or right. Handballs were a mixed bag no real hot potatoes though,

And the critics cannot say how and how many players will get 30 plus possessions on each game to replace Clarry. That's 35 or 15 and 20 that the opposition have to get that WE ARE Benefiting from. I don't think some of you critics of Clarry  appreciate or see all that Clarry does.

All the experts including Caro saying ehy haven't we signed him up yet are jumping the gun, How long did we negotiate with Lever and Gawn No one knows Its just that Clarry and Trac are much more public and seeming much more important for our future.

BW5 Clarry  is IMZo another level above Tom Mitchell who  is a good accumulator But not many other skills.

Clarry is not a one trick pony and will be better in this next 100 games in impact on our results NOT ONE of the detractors has even said or thought about the next level he can go to which is scary.

BW you are basically shooting the messenger Clarry is with an improvement in handball / and or more kicking ratio capable of improvement.

Many  of the others struggle to get 15/20 possessions why not criticise them as they don't impact the game as much as Clarry.

Surely  you saw the Bulldogs  game without him and although only a practice game it showed how he would   be missed. Trac took until his 6 th year to fully mature and Anguswe are still waiting  for !! 
So Lay off Clarry a bit and question why others with ability are underehelmingly performing consistently and not impacting our results.

Clary in a top side like Richmond or Geelong would be a different player: would have time to be extraordinarily damaging which he doesn’t have now. This year is crucial for us to demonstrate to him we can be that team, as we did in 2018. 
 

Up to us really. My problem, is l don’t think Goodwin has the coaching skills to deliver it.

Look at Richmond, you would have Martin, Cotchin, Riewoldt and Lynch then the rest, more than one model works.

I agree. I an not saying he is not important, far from it, l am simply saying we need to be able to make the case that he has a brilliant future playing for us. This is why our performance this year at the least needs to reflect 2018.

Richmond, Hawthorn, Geelong never let young guns in their prime walk. They kept the core in tact. Oliver would be leaving before his prime and he's already amazing.

If you go to the contracts thread you get a gist of where everyone is at. Players such as Melksham, Hibberd, Jones, Gawn, May, Tmac and Lever (although only 25) have either had or coming to the end of their payday. I’m guessing Ben Brown would be on good money without being extravagant, Oliver and Petracca are about to have theirs. I would not hesitate giving Oliver 3.2 million over 4 and Petracca 4 million over 4. I think there’s still plenty for Salem and Weid both who need to show more.

I will have a crack.  In a better team like Geelong or Richmond he would be less likely to get tagged.  With better players around him and better coached team he would have others screening/blocking for him more often.

Atm he has to do things the hard way because he is every week tagged.  We need players like Harmes/Viney/Brayshaw to do a lot more blocking for him....or getting out into space to receive his handballs.

Those 3 players i mention do not require teams to put any thought into us....Tag Clarry and Petracca, let the others do whatever.

Our midfield does not scare any of the other teams right now.   Viney/Brayshaw/Harmes all need to hurt the opposition in some way.  Currently they really don't.   All are overpaid for their output and consistency/value to the team.

Would be paying Oliver whatever he wants....i would go as far to say that would not swap him for all of those 3 put together.  He is THAT valuable to us.   Without him we drop off a cliff.

I would think it's all to do with sustained success. Clayton and the club were expecting to be well and truly playing consistent finals by now.

I haven't read this entire thread but here are two comments in response to recent posts:

1. Anyone who thinks Oliver isn't a matchwinner/influential player or that the club will be able to cope without him is absolutely, completely and utterly wrong;
2. Does anyone have any actual source/information to suggest he hasn't re-signed yet because he's lost faith in the club, or similar?

On Saturday I saw both Goodwin and Yze have one on one chats with Oliver during the breaks and while Oliver was on the boundary. I’m not sure if the club is trying to really show him how much he’s wanted and needed, or if it’s just a normal process. But they certainly didn’t take anyone else for one on one chats. 
 

Oliver is an out and out star. His ability to win the contested ball is extraordinary and he is as important to our team as May is. Anyone who thinks we can just replace him is kidding themselves. 
He is consistently in the top five players in the competition for clearances and contested possessions. Unless you think we are replacing him with Cripps, we will be a far poorer team without him. And our chances of a flag will be significantly diminished. We need to move heaven and earth to keep him!

That's why we have hired Yze Dee2014

Also the Cats and Tigers are irrelevant as Clarry  mostly gets first hands on the ball.

Its up to him and Yze to reform his kick/ handball ratio and Change his approach to greater impact in this process.

Its a  2 way Bargain and a win win for the team taking this on now.

Oliver is quite possibly the best midfielder the Mfc has ever had. Can this be denied? If not, then he is definitely in the mix. On average 50% of first rounders fail. so the odds that we get a player as good as Oliver with 2 first rounders is next to zero.

Trac is fantastic but he's had one good season.  Clarry has been consistent since 2017.  

They are two different beasts, but it amazes how the posters on this site are blinded by Trac's flashier efforts and rate these over the consistency of Oliver.

I'm sure Clarry will resign, his bond with blokes like Petracca and Salem is very obvious. It's normal for players and/or their management to draw out this part of the process. They will execute when they feel they have the leverage required.

I'm more curious about how some of you are qualifying these opinions that Clarry isn't happy with club, coach etc.
