Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Some randoms gleaned from the Pure Footy podcast:

Melbourne are only conceding scores from 30.6% of i-50s - the stingiest ever for a team after round 4.

Melbourne should be scoring a predictive 101.8 points p/g (currently 89.5).

This part was unclear if related to the above or not: we're currently generating the second-hardest shots profile.

Adam Tomlinson has lost 1 out of 19 one-on-one contests since shifting to defence in round 10 last year.

21 players have played every game so far this year (obviously set to dip this week).

We have kicked more behinds than points in 3 out of the 4 games with the one game when we where in the positive GWS kicked 11.2 Geelong even  had 9.3 at one stage. So while we have kicked bad our opposition have been kicking straight. The wheel will turn.

I've been enjoying picking over some individual curiosity stats that often don't mean much but which can be amusing.

First up, we have two players in the top-10 of disposals per game - Oliver of course, at third and only a whisker behind Mitchell and Macrae, and then Petracca at 8th.  Both also feature in clearances, with Oliver slipping slightly to ninth, Petracca in 23rd and Viney in 15th giving us three inside the top 25.

Viney is back to his hunter-killer ways with more than 8 tackles a game putting him at 4th on average and thanks to a quick. James Jordan also in 4th place for tackles among rising star eligible players.  Pretty sure 'JJ' is also 'Junior Junior'.

Petracca is equal 4th for inside 50s, just ahead of Martin, which is nice.

No surprise, Gawn is second to Grundy for total hitouts but is better than Grundy on every other conceivable measure.

Bayley Fritsch still sits in second for marks inside 50, equal with Tom Hawkins.  Strangely, I think it has been a different player in first every week.

But the stat of 2021 for the Demons is still tackles inside 50, with an incredible SIX players ranked inside the top 25, plus Fritta correcting one of his deficiencies and coming in at 38th.

Tom McDonald in 4th, Kysaiah Pickett in equal 5th, Charlie Spargo in equal 15th, Jack Viney in equal 21st, James Jordan and Alex Neal-Bullen both in equal 24th.

This is incredibly surprising. I've never felt it's a particularly strong area of Tom's game the tackles, but that's brilliant. He'll keep his spot if he creates a contest in the area and tackles on the ground to prevent easy exits.

Very much so.  In terms of his ranking within the team since i started keeping tackles inside 50 records...

2018 - 10th

2019 - 11th

2020 - equal 2nd alongside Mitch Brown and just behind Kozzie in 1st

2021 - 1st ahead of Kozzie, then Spargs

Rnd 5, 2021 MCG - Hawks vs Demons

Gawny hits the big time for the second time this season.  His other top ranking was against the Giants in Rnd 3.

Clarry's contract discussions seemingly having no impact on his ability to contribute.  Decision making looked a tad off today at times and still plenty of room for improvement, especially with his connection work coming inside 50, where i thought he was a little better last week against the Cats.  There was a moment today where he marked in the member's pocket on a super tight angle, we had an open CHF area with Melk & ANB running free from the center square open for quite a while but unfortunately Clarry never even appeared to be looking out for them.  Missed the goal by quite a lot.  Opportunity lost.  Some future work on this forward 50 connection aspect and set shots at goal wouldn't hurt going forward.  Little things that, if improved on, just might take him to super star status.

Welcome back Hibb!  I thought he was very influential today pressuring his opponents, leaving his own to support, two way running and general desperation.  Super impressive return.

Salem again in the top five and having a solid start to the season.

And yes you aren't seeing things, the super mossie Kozzie in the top 5.  And not for the first time.  He came 5th in Rnd 17 last season vs the Giants with a score of 2.925  However, this was his highest statistical score by far, easily beating his outstanding Rnd 3 score against the Giants of 3.650

Our best players also batted deep today!  Without trawling through records (going back to 2017), i can't recall too many times (if any), where we've had 13 players hitting a score of 3 or higher in any match.  That's a good solid contribution (or better) from so many today and quite possibly a record i would think.

The team score of 69.03 is right on our 2018 average team score of 69.53 !!

Weighted Average Scores up to & including Rnd 5 , 2021 vs 2019

Our average team score this season is now tracking above 2018!  Ok so it's only slightly above at a tad over 1%, but it's still higher.  Does this mean we are PF bound?  18% above 2019's disaster.

Quite a return game from Hibb in this round when you see it in context vs the season averages.  That will probably drop off in coming weeks but one can only hope he holds that level.

Pitty May won't be back for the coming Anzac eve / Jones' 300th against the Tiges.  Reckon he might be the difference if it's a close one.

Latest on where the Demons are tracking from Fox Footy.  Some of this has already been covered by astute contributors on this forum but nonetheless an interesting read...

Rnd 6, 2021 MCG - Demons vs Tigers

Too many great contributions to mention today.  Let's just take a look at the top 3 who are all off the charts.

Salem:  His highest weighted score since keeping these stats, beating his previous best against the Suns in Rnd 20, 2018 where he topped that round with a massive 6.325.

31 Effective disposals @ 79.5% efficiency!   2 one percenters, 2 clearances, 8 rebounds, 6 inside 50s, 3 tackles, 4 score involvements, 9 intercepts and a goal.  5 turnovers.

Clarry:  24 effectives @ 66.70%, 2 one percenters, 4 clearances, 4 rebound 50s, 4 inside 50s, 6 tackles, 10 score involvements, 7 intercepts and only 3 turnovers.

Tracc:  20 effectives @ 52.5%, 10 clearances, 3 rebounds, 7 inside 50s, 7 tackles, 11 score involvements and a goal.  Turnovers a tad high at 7.

Taking no notice of Hibb in 22nd place here.   Did the job asked on Dusty and would have no doubt sacrificed much of his usual role to achieve this which has obviously impacted his usual output.

Our highest team score so far this season, outstripping 2018's season average and smashing 2019's.  Also our highest score from the top 6 ranked players this season.

A lovely set of numbers.  You have nicely identified that Hibbard’s statistical score had little correlation to how we judge his performance.  Jackson in the top 6!  A couple of Christians at the top, separated by a Clayton.  Salem could have easily won the Checker Medal.

Rnd 7, 2021 Blundstone Arena - Kangaroos vs Demons

Strange game indeed and a round to forget.  Nonetheless a win is a win and it does give us a tad more breathing room in a points sense.

One of those rounds where the stats, in many cases, have little correlation with who did what and who had the most impact on the day.  Mind you it wouldn't be the first time or the last but this one is up there as being a real doozy.

Is it just me? Possibly i wasn't watching closely enough but not sure i would have had May in my top three or even five.  No doubt the coverage from side on doesn't show a fair wack of what goes on behind /off the ball either.  However, i suspect many of the possessions that went towards his top of the table outcome (statistically) were cheap ones lateral and/or on the switch.  Wouldn't be the only player nor the first time.  Plenty of defenders rack them up in this way as well.  Even the kick ins count i believe.

Now i usually focus on the positives here, but the last time a player received a negative weighted score for a whole match, at least without being injured early and not taking any further part (a la Tomlinson), was Joel Smith's Rnd 19, 2018 match vs the Crows with a -0.300

Statistically ANB's  - 0.100 weighted score ranks as possibly the 2nd worst in the last four years.  Let's look at some of the numbers.  5 effective disposals running at 50% DE, one 1%er, two inside 50s, 4 score involvements, 181 meters gained, 2 intercepts.  Finally....Zero tackles and 8 turnovers!  Hibb the only other player not to lay a tackle in this match!  Not counting Thommo for obvious reasons.

On the flip side a big positive.  Young Jordan.  Cop some of these for outstanding as a rookie... 18 effective disposals running at 90% efficiency.  4 Clearances, 4 inside 50s, 7 tackles (one inside 50), 7 Score involvements, 260 Meters Gained, 1 Goal and only 1 turnover!  Nice work young fella.

Top three for score involvements... Fritsch 10, Kozzie 9 & Tracc with 8.

Top three for Meters Gained... May 552, Tracc 539 & Clarry 438.

Top three for Intercepts... Lever 9, Salem 8 and May with 7.

Top three for Tackles inside 50... Brown 2, Equal 2nd were Salem, Hunt, Dogga, JJ & Kozzie with one a piece

Top three for Turnovers...  ANB 8, Melk 6 and equal third Clarry & Tracc with 5 each.

Thanks Kent.  Real pitty about Thomo but hopefully Tmac can play a similar role.  Time for the Weid to make his 2021 debut you think?

Hopefully a blip on the radar.  Seemed 1/2 the squad were 5% off yesterday, saved by the young guns.  Good to see Brown applying pressure in the 50 and not just leading for marks.

Form is a fickle thing Buck.  I'm sure the boys will knuckle down this week.  They can't all have a half of footy, some a whole game, as bad as that again this week i hope.  Viney out is a big blow let's hope its not the old 426 issue.  Fingers crossed.

Weighted Average Scores up to & including Rnd 7 , 2021 vs 2019

Not the greatest debut in the Red & Blue from BB but should be given some latitude to find match fitness & form and for the rest of the boys to find him as well.

Spargo & Chunk just hanging in there at 21st & 22nd although Chunk did move up two places from 24th at the end of the previous round so not too shabby.

Oskar sneaks in to the 22 but one week against the bottom rung team obviously not a solid indicator.

Max and ANB the biggest drops from last week after pretty ordinary performances, dropping 4 and 7 places respectively.  Melk drops out of the top 22 and not for the first time.

Kozzie & LJ hanging on to 9th & 14th.

The Team's (top 22 players) average score is a massive 17.5% above the awful 2019 and just above 2018's average by 0.75%

Rnd 8, 2021 MCG - Demons vs Swans

Harmes, Clarry, Salem, May, Tmac & ANB the stand outs for me this evening.  A few of the usual contributors seemed to be out of it for much of the night but this does happen against quality opposition and the Swans need to be given plenty of credit.  Probably the best opponent i have witnessed live so far in terms of bringing the heat for almost four quarters and pushing us all the way.

Top three for Clearances... Clarry 10, daylight the rest with Harmes & Tracc 5 each

Top three for Score Involvements... Tmac with 7, Equal second Harmes & Melk 5 each

Top three for Meters Gained... Salem 605, Clarry 534 & Ed 420

Top three for One Percenters... Lever & May 8 each, Big Max 6

Top three for Intercepts... Salem 10, equal second Lever, Harmes & Gus with 7 each

Top three for Tackles inside 50... Kozzie 5, equal second Harmes, JJ & ANB 2 each

Top three for Turnovers... Tracc 11 (Big number!), Clarry 8, Salem 7

Top three most Time on Ground... Lever & May 100%, Ed 98%

Bottom three Least time on Ground... Rivers & Spargo 69%, LJ 70%

We've finally lost a last quarter, in fact we lost 3 quarters last night (by a combined 4 points). I wonder when was the last time we lost 3 quarters in a game and still won??

Im surprised we did not (from what i witnessed at the ground and i might have missed it) start with Kozzie in the middle at the beginning of the match or seemingly at any stage last night.

I think the Swans had us for speed in those center bounces and worried us into playing on the shoulder much of the time instead of being first in more often.

The need for speed and the hunt for ball was lacking imv R&B .  Kozzie also brings an element of closing speed that may have resulted in a few tighter tussles and turnovers in our favour through the middle had he been played there in short bursts.

The above could also be completely wrong ?  Would need to watch the replay to be more certain.

Regardless it's definitely a red flag that needs addressing.  The return of Viney will probably help solve it somewhat.  I just wonder why we suddenly changed our tactics (no Kozzie and apparently playing on the shoulder vs see ball get ball more often) from the winning one previously?  Match ups no doubt come into it but would be interesting to hear the coaches take on this.

Note:  Erratum above ?...Kozzie DID start in the middle.  At least for the first bounce anyway.  Haven't checked replay further than that!  My comments regarding ideally playing him there in bursts against the Swans are most likely null and void!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
