Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I'd go no changes, Viney, Hibbo and Melk have had very limited pre-seasons and playing as fit a side as possible will serve us the best at the moment. After the job Cognilio did on Steele shows Harmes has a place, but he just needs to remember not to loose his positioning at the center bounce, which he did very well in the pre-season games. I also think Freo ddi well to stop Hunt running out of the backline, clearly seeing this as something we'd worked on in the off-season, but they shouldn't give up on that after 1 game.

I think this shows what a lack of ambition a lot of Dees supporters have. In my past senior corporate life there is no way l would have put up with the mediocre performances of my team, particularly in the last half. Unfortunately that is what we have put up with for the last two years after an outstanding performance in 2018.

No competent Board would tolerate this. Unfortunately l think we have mediocracy with our CEO as well, there are good reasons why he was let go by the Magpies.

I support Goodwin this year, but given our outstanding list, there needs then to be an end point. In the meantime we need to give our outstanding players a reason to re-sign, as they did after 2018. The complacency on here though is a concern. If the rumours about Alistair Clarkson are true about his interest in the MFC as he comes out of contract this year given his historic connection to the Demons, then that might provide a way forward.

Having said that though, go Dees! Let’s go one better than 2018. I think we have the list to go all the way. I really hope Goodwin and his team can make it happen.

Struggling to understand what this has to do with my post, are you saying that unless we make wholesale changes to the team after we win we don't have ambition?

If we are going to beat the Saints, we need to be quicker. I am not too sure how much we can do that. St Kilda are not a big team. Chandler for Jackson is an improvement. I think if we play Jackson we are no chance of beating the Saints. Jackson just does not do enough we can't afford to pick him in hope. Sparrow will make way for Viney. Much as nobody did too much wrong last week, it is more about what we need to do to beat the Saints. We do have more experience and pace at Casey and I would be tempted to drop Jones and Jetta if we could get more out of two of Sparrow, Bedford, Melk, Hibberd or Baker. Daw has been taking marks and kicking goals don't know if he has enough fitness yet, maybe a sub.

Shoosh

Jackson will play

Chandler won’t

Jetta will play as he destroyed his opponent and reads the play better than anyone.

Baker ?‍♂️
Daw is a spud, surely you know that

Can't imagine Viney wanting to play a 3rd consecutive week of VFL

Hibberd has also played 3 VFL games and should be ready

Everyone potting Melksham is kind of laughable. Yeah he isn't our best tackler but we need his nouse around goals and delivery inside 50. Many of you acting like we're spoilt for choice in that area at the moment

Problem is that is the Milkshake of 2018, not the version we got in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, he had only 10 goal assists and 15 goals for the 17 games he played. That is less than 1 goal and around 0.6 goal assists per game. I think we need to do better than that.

Melksham was down last season but he was 1st in the AFL for Goal Assists in both 2018 and 2019.

He comes straight back into them team for mine and anyone writing him off will be in for a surprise.

Shoosh yourself. If Jackson plays as well as he usually does we will lose. If Jetta is best available, pick him he did nothing wrong. Would others be more help was my question? You are a very insecure blind faith fan and don't seem to know much about the game. Jackson is worth more to us as a trade, there is no room for a forward that can't kick goals. I have never thought Baker was best 22 but he does have pace that others are lacking. This is what we will need to beat the Saints. Daw may be a spud but he has kicked a lot more goals and had more marks than Jackson has this year.

Agree Nev actually played quite well and Jones was a pass in my book

The problem lies with the Saints fast smalls particularly in the front half of the ground

Nev whilst reading the play brilliantly and being fantastic one on one will struggle to keep pace with them

How do we combat them ? I'm tempted to say Bowey in but I know I'll get howled down by a few on here

Other key threats
Brad Hill - I'd try Harmes first in a run with role
Steele - Viney hopefully comes in matching his physicality (Sparrow has done ok but if Viney is fit he has to play)

Did Jackson steal your girlfriend or what?

The kid has bags of talent. He’ll be a mobile ruck and extra midfielder for us in time. They don't grow on trees.

He didn’t play well on the weekend. If he needs to go back to Casey to develop and learn his craft so be it. I'm not against the idea

But trading him after what, 7 games of AFL footy, makes absolutely no sense.

Jackson will never get a go at Max's job. We need Jackson to kick goals, he does not seem able to do that and we can't afford to keep picking him in hope. Let him earn his place by kicking more goals than anybody else at Casey. The reality we don't really have a place for him in the best 22, and he is not busting the door down. Jackson is quick for a big guy but he is far from quick against a team like the saints. If he needs to develop it should not be in the best 22. If others see he has so much talent then maybe we could get a player that is more useful to our needs. We don't need a part-time ruck that can't kick goals. I suspect that if we get any half decent offer for Jackson at years end we will move him on. We have too many others who are more ready to play. There is a logic that if we don't play him he will be worth nothing so I expect he will only play games that we can cover his lack of production.

No, I think it is funny that so many here want to pick a forward who can't kick goals and still expect the team to win. We could cover it against Freo but it won't work against the saints. Let Jackson learn where the goals are at Casey. Jackson does not fill any particular needs now and I doubt he will be a match winner for years. How many years was Max at Casey before he was a regular? If we can get something good for Jackson we should move him on.

Because he hits the scoreboard. Has kicked 8 goals in 3 games (albeit 2 practice matches) which puts him on pace for a 50 goal season.

Not a chance in the world you would even briefly contemplate dropping Fritsch and he’s certainly a player the opposition would be weary of.

I think he misses too many 'clutch' goals - goals that keep the team in the game, or the ones that are desperately needed

That's my concern

Petty played well down back in the Casey game (see match report).

Is there room for him up forward?

https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/886758

Petty needs another week or so at Casey i would think.

If he can set it alight a little, especially on the scoreboard, and LJ fails to score much i would think he will be a chance to replace him in the short term.  Can't afford to keep out of form players in for weeks on end any more at this level, especially rookies, regardless of promise.

Not too many changes for me.

I would bring in Viney as long a he has the run in his legs. One thing that came out of the games was that the longer quarters, th rule changes and less interchanges have put a premium on fitness and the ability to run out games. Only players that are 100% ready should be considered for selection.

Out goes Jones. He had a reasonable game, But I think we need more mid rotations and better (younger?) legs.

Might consider Hibberd for either Rivers or Hunt but it is line ball for me. Rivers took some good marks to intercept in the first half in particular and loosing Hunt would take a lot of pace and some flexibility out of the side.

Other than that the only other change I would consider would be to look at making Bowey the Sub. Chandler will need a game somewhere next week.

Report from Casey practice match is pretty sketchy, but it doesn't sound like Viney, Melksham or Hibberd took the game apart. But if there's any way Viney is ready, or even ready enough, he should come in - if only to free up a bit more outside run from the likes of Oliver.

Otherwise, judging by the Casey report, VDB put his hand up.

I agree that he misses too many set shots but he did steady the ship in the third quarter with a lovely set shot that went through.

Is on track for a 45-50 goal season if he plays all games which would be a very solid result.

If however he has continued 5 possession 0 goal games then he should be sent down to Casey.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
