Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I'm pretty sure the only in will be Viney.  Chandler will go to Casey to get a run and I would think Sparrow or Gus will be moved into the substitute role.

I will note that they continue to play Gus everywhere but in the guts where he belongs, but if they can't fit him in there then there are better options for the other roles they are trying to shoehorn him into.

Rivers has had 3 poor games in a row if you include the practice matches.

Not adverse to dropping him next week. We’re playing a high quality side in St Kilda and we can’t afford to carry mistake riddled players.

I’m sure Rivers will be a good player in time (see GWS game last year) but he needs to go back to Casey to work on his composure.

In - Viney, Hibberd

out - Rivers, Sparrow

or perhaps drop Hunt for Hibberd and Rivers gets another chance.

he was in the guts for times, but needed the runs in his legs - he still does not work defensively hard enough for long enough

If they see him fit enough to play then it's a very simple change, Viney for Sparrow. I'm really not sure what Sparrow adds to our side other then grunt.

Hunt was simply poor. St Kilda have some quick forwards so he'll likely play again.

Jones and Jetta I thought were great contributors. Jetta I was pretty hard on pre game but it was Neville of 2018 performance.

I always enjoy this thread, shows how different we see the game.  Hunt was a liability at several times however such is the need for run off half back I fear he will continue to play there although to me he is a forward.  Sparrow and Jones both mixed good with bad yesterday so one of those goes out for Viney for mine.

Fair comment re: Sparrow, but tackling can't be the only thing a player brings to the side, otherwise vandenBerg would be playing.

I didn't feel Sparrow added much at all to the game, tackles notwithstanding. Ditto Jones. Harmes might not have been great, but I saw a lot more confidence in him as a mid/forward compared to what I saw last year. I'd be keeping Harmes over Jones or Sparrow.

Yeah agree mate, a tackle count doesn't guarantee you a game. But I'm using that stat to illustrate what was visible, which was he was the only mid really going hard with defensive pressure and given our lack of it from other mids then I think it might be an important thing to keep in the team.

Happy with the win, but seeing some of those old habits still there was a bit of a worry for me.

It’s alarming that we didn’t address our lack of outside run and pace in the off season.

Did we not draft for run and polish? We by all reports tried to trade for Hinds but he chose elsewhere. It was pretty well reported we met with Philips (unsure who opted out) and wanted Smith but missed to the Cats. My view is we attempted to address it. We need to be fast tracking those that can like Bowey, Laurie, Bedford, Chandler as soon as we are confident they can play out a senior game.

Do not think that there will be many changes to the side for next week if any. Would like to know how the like replacements from Casey's game performed first to see who was demanding a game back in the firsts. Love to have Viney back, but would err on the side of caution after his injury and another game at Casey would help with his match fitness and and make him even hungrier. Frankly I would be happy to have an unchanged side and show a bit of faith for there is to be improvement and excitement ahead for this side. Also by winning the first game we have shown the first steps of improvement on last year. A that's the first tick in the box for 2021.

Viney if fit presumably for Sparrow

I suspect Hibberd needs another run at Casey

So does Viney. We play a fast StKilda so putting viney in is not quickening us up. Give sparrow more game time.

Sparrow lead our tackle count with 6. We need that to balance out the others sadly.

ANB had some great looks inside 50 and had 5 clearances (second only behind Oliver). Craziness to suggest dropping him IMO.

Spot on for me, Sparrow actually runs two ways and when watching i noted he had a few nice kicks when we were attacking.

ANB apart from his awful time wasting set shot that he ended up kicking straight to a freo player was very good, his fitness levels made him shine.

Hunt is the only other player apart from Harmes i'd consider dropping. Harmes was really bad.

As per usual, Fritsch escapes scrutiny

For what? 2 goals 1, 2nd most score involvements, 6 marks, his pressure and contest work was all improved if not decent, nailed a couple of tackles. All against a very strong Freo backline. The breeze at the city end made set shots incredible difficult too.

If Luke Ryan dominated the game like Lever and May did then you might have a case but that didn’t happen.

i was disappointed with Harmes as well but on reflection, you cant have him in the middle against a fast midfielder. He is strong not speedy. They ran off him in the square a few times for goals and it seemed to cost him his confidence when moved to HFF.

Nev was solid defensively but I reckon I could’ve handled Liam Henry in a one on one. Henry’s out of position as a deep forward.

The issue with Nev is he just provides nothing once we’ve won the ball back. Given our game plan requires switching, run and carry and changing angles to move the ball it’s a big liability to have a one way player. There were times our defenders ran in trouble where Nev could’ve been there for a handball or lateral kick.

I don’t think they can give him Dan Butler either. Rivers with a chop out from Hunt probably has to take that assignment.

Jetta was better than Hunt. But I think Hunt has upside if he can sort out his ground ball fumbles and more than that I just don’t think we can go with Hibbo and Nev in the same side.

Harmes just needs to get his touch back. First time getting back in the midfield for a while. He stays.

I'd be looking at Viney for Jones and Hibberd for Hunt, and that ought to do it for the week.

Bring Bowey in for Jones, Hunt to half forward, Bowey to play Hunt’s HB role

Viney in for Sparrow

This is what I would do.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
