Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Of course.

If you have Max Gawn rucking for you, then you can beat Bontempelli, MacRae, Libba, Hunter, Dunkley, Smith etc, even if you are Sparrow, playing in your first few games, Jordon, who has not played one senior game, ANB, who is not a mid or sure ball handler, or AVB, playing your first game in ages. They were our mids at many of the stoppages today.

Maybe read my original post again.

I still think we made a big mistake not going after Phillips...especially as the Pies virtually gave him away.

At one stage we were interested in him and then we weren't ... suggests to me we realised we weren't getting him or that he wanted too much $$$ to fit in our cap ... if tmac had gone I suspect it may have been different

If we can't get the ball, we can't work our system out.

Long bombs into the forward line, or leads into the boundary.

We still can't play when under pressure. They killed us with their pressure.

They slipped too many tackles.

Did not try and control the tempo.

All straight line and red mist.

Why can't we stop their ball movers.

If English and Bruce learn to kick goals they will give it a shake.

Disappointed, no confidence created to buy in. Panic, fumbles, very little 1 percenters, handball to pressure, turnovers from kicks.

Too many passengers.

Without May, Fritta, ANB, Langdon, Gawn and Lever, we would be completely lost.

When do the learnings stop and the doings start?

Gold.  Absolutely.

I’d rather the coach and captain say... “it’s not about words and ifs.  It’s about actions and results”.

Goodwin is a politician at the moment and not filling me with the confidence that we all deserve.

I was actually excited turning up today, even if it was a pre-season game.

Finally after 18 months, Live Football in the flesh!

I was not excited when I left.

I don't care about the outs, there was no soul in this team, nowhere near the required pressure and intensity - just the same predictable skill errors and the usual suspects killing chains of possession.

I regret going today.  The only thing I learned is how completely stuffed we are if Oliver ever gets injured... because we are deadset D-grade in the middle without him.

I have a horrible feeling we're about to waste a third year in a row Post 2018 - and this group's potential is going to be p*$$ed up against a wall because this particular coach can't inspire or get the best from them.

Have to agree Kev. Unfortunately our 1-3 year players are either just not good enough or are not trained properly. I think it maybe the former. Most other teams have a smokey that comes to light in the praccy games but not us. I cannot see anything in these players to give me confidence going forward and boy they missed tackles or gave stupid frees away. Our depth is poor. Adding to this is the mid range players like Jones, Harmes, Tomlinson, Jetta, AVB ( who was pathetic) and of course the normal culprit in Spargo. These guys gave us nothing and when the team needed them big time to stand up. We may get about 3 players back for the first round but will still need a couple of these mid range or 1-3 year players in the side which to me is a worry. Again it will be our bottom 6 or so players that will drag us down.

I will give LJ some slack but he also needs to start showing me he can be the star we are waiting for. Dogs just pushed him off the ball to easily for my likening and he is not jumping for someone who is supposed to have a great leap.

Finally TMac has to stay. We just do not have anyone else.

Also on TMac. He must stay in as we have nothing else at present

I hope we get at least another 7 back for round 1. Oliver, Viney, Salem, Hibberd, Melksham, Kossie and Brayshaw. Hopefully we can also work Mitch Brown and Petty into the mix, up forward as well. These players will improve the side but I do worry that our forward problems remain unresolved. And I see no real changes to the game plan, if you can call it a plan! Slow ball movement out of the backline, kicking long down the line is not how we train, sorry to sound like a broken record.

Haven't seen any of this but wondering how much of this result came down to coaching well before and during the game.  Eg; the differimg game styles / skill sets of the two sides.

Bevo would appear to easily have Goodwin's measure at this point.  Last time we played them in a H & A i felt motivation may have played a big part in the result with Bevo using a motivational rev up speech (video?) just before they ran on to get his boys to rise to the occasion.  Meanwhile Goodwin appeared to stick with the same old 'sticking to the processes' method.

Agree Earl on our lack of game plan and that sits with the coach but what worries me most is those mid range players  and our kids are just not improving. Understand Jones and Jetta will not improve but we are struggling big time with depth and having Harmes, AVB, Tomlinson, Spargo in the side as plodders does not sit well with me. Even the Dogs today who played nearly their best side had a couple of kids that shone. Couldn't say the same about ours.

I’m not too disappointed as it’s a practise game and the many, many players we had out make it difficult to judge.

However, it is worrying that our pressure and effort were so lax, that our structure collapsed so regularly, that our tackles were broken so easily, that almost all our goals were from chaos ball situations, that our ability to move the ball is still so stagnant, that our skills are still so terrible and that so many players getting a chance to play for a spot were so very ordinary.

Bring that type of performance to the first 6 weeks and Goodwin will be gone.
I hope for his sake and ours that this was a personnel issue, because if we have really improved so little on all the issues that ruined last season, I shudder to think...

Also while the dogs were closer to full strength than us they were missing:

Treloar, Easton Wood, JJ (I know he was omitted but jeez, I’d like him in our team!!),

Not to mention losing Noughton, Crozier and Vandemeer for much of the game!

They may well be one of the best teams and we may well have been undermanned, but watching that game felt far more 2019 than anything we dished up last year.

I desperately hope we bounce back against Freo.

Good to see we haven't changed a single thing with out kick outs. So bloody predictable last year just bombing it to Gawn and yet I see Steven May popping 50m punts on his head.

It's predictable and the doggies were able to work it out quick smart.

I haven’t seen the game but if this is the case I’m at a loss as to what our strategists are paid for. It’s been such an obvious issue for us since 2019, why not have a bit of creativity about it to try to HURT the opposition? Seems our aim is to get it out of the 50 for a stoppage or pluck a contested mark. Sides figured this out in early 2019 ?.

Slam it on the boot and hope for the best. The Bulldog player got a hand on the shorts to be fair, but still, the kicking motion was never about anything other than territory. Thought we were attempting to get past this type of footy. Harmes needs to read the memo if he's going to play in the midfield this year. There's only so much rolling my eyes can take.

Was disappointed to hear BBB mention 'learnings' at 3qtr time....

Understand what you are saying but should he say we can kick 6 goals to nil andwin it? Probably but last quarter We actually hung in a bit and we had been through the ringer in the3rd.

Again this  horrible ONE quarter cropped up and it probably could have been earlier in the game

With the team as selected we really have no option but to learn !!

BBB was not wrong but a bit too truthful a bit early but no harm done really.

A look at his highlights and he clearly doesn't have elite speed for a small mid/forward. What he does have is great agility and classy decision making, but I think he'll have to burst around a contest and run all day rather than be a break away speed guy. Crash, bash and out sprint is never the best way to play footy though, clean skills and burst is the way to get it done.

It's not like you to complicate or over-think things.

Example of poor defensive structure, lack of accountability, organisation and leadership. Why so many players manning free space just 10 metres behind the mark? You can see English running towards goal left of the screen

Untitled-1.jpg

Outnumbered at fall of the ball. Bruce literally stopped and walked to not get in the way. 4 players trailing on edge of the frame...fmd

Untitled-2.jpg

How can this type of thing happen for professionals that train as much as they do. Selfish, undisciplined and stupid. Really hope this game wasn't a sign of things to come.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
