The Footy Impact of Victoria's Lockdown

As everyone in Victoria knows, we're in lockdown. 

For football, I believe that means club's can only train in 10-person groups until the lockdown ends (supposedly on Wednesday, but who knows...). 

For Demonland, I expect this means no training reports as I doubt travelling to Casey is one of the four accepted reasons for leaving home and it's probably only within 5 km for very few Demonlanders anyway. 

But some perspective is necessary. No training reports is a small price to pay if the lockdown stops the spead of Covid. But I'm still going to miss them.

Lockdown 3.0:  Panic, over-reaction, distressing, destabilising and unnecessary!

If our quarantine management and contract tracing were really effective we wouldn't need a state-wide lockdown.  Other states seem to manage it and are able to lockdown parts of the city - not the whole state.

There will be other cases - we can't lock down the state or shut borders every time a case pops up.  Get the processes right, Dan!

I'll leave it. I get that we're all frustrated about lockdown but this forum isn't the place to discuss it. It just causes more fights between posters and we have enough of that arguing about inviting players to train with us.

Maybe change the heading to 'The Football Impact of ...' as it is it invites frustration and the politically related comments.

Would it make a difference if the quote was speed of Covid or spread of Covid? I wonder. Australia is doing extremely well, let's not lose sight of that. As for who is responsible, the federal government is responsible for who enters Australia. The federal government is responsible for quarantine by law. The states are doing a very good job of stepping into the breach of an ill prepared (understandably) federal government. Time for the Feds to do their job. At the moment we are all doing a great job, it is tough. It is important.

You could argue attending training is one of the four accepted reasons to leave home - Caregiving.

You're showing the players you care by attending training, and you're showing care for your fellow demonlander by providing them with a training report.

Living in NSW I've really enjoyed the recent training reports.

Such a shame and feel for all you Victorians currently going through lockdown.

Let's not forget the womens team who are doing us all proud at the moment and are a genuine chance to win the flag.

If the border closures continue then hubs will be required to complete the season and if so i hope it doesn't upset their momentum. And i expect the club to go into bat on their behalf to ensure we don;t get another raw deal like the men copped last year. I'll be very disappointed if we cop an unfair travel schedule while Carlton and Collingwood get a nice easy run to finals.

I understand your frustrations but I’m not sure comparing with other states or other countries. Favourably or not. Every situation is different. 
 

Every state has has a lockdown recently and they’ve all been different. 
 

WA locked down Perth and 2 other regions which is pretty much the majority of the WA population. You’d have to drive 4 or 5 hours to Albany or Geraldton to escape it.

QLD didn’t but they were one case. We didn’t lockdown over the one case with the golfer but have over 4+ in the community.

The issue with a metro Melbourne lockdown is so many Melburnians would flood to beach houses and farms. A police ring has to be set up and we’ve exhausted the police resources.

I find it crazy that the state and feds haven’t purpose built facilities in regional areas with fly in fly out special workers. But that’s just my opinion. 
 

Today is hump day of the 5 day lockdown, so hopefully the end is in sight tomorrow

The recent Sydney outbreak had the merciful benefit of beginning in the inbred coves... ahh... northern beaches area.  By quirks of geography and sociology it is almost as separate to the rest of Sydney as Geelong to Melbourne.  Maybe even moreso considering the number of Geelong-Melbourne commuters.

The location of this outbreak in Melbourne was a real bastard; fairly central with numerous connections, as well as an unknown period of potential infectiousness.

It's kind of similar to the 'pizza shop guy' in Adelaide who got the whole state closed down simply because if he had actually been working shifts at that time there could have been 40+ people infected before anyone even knew about it.

That said, knowing people who have worked in the quarantine hotels I am staggered at the gaps in process and reporting that still exist.  Then again, I'm still pre-occupied by little details like the hotel quarantine staff are still getting the same old 21.58 an hour as they did before their every slip-up could cost a billion dollars.  Not to mention, you know, every reception greeting and room service drop-off is now an unpleasant and dangerous experience.

In the circumstances the 5-day lockdown is probably the right call because constraining this outbreak might just be enough to get us to the point of vaccine-based control without having any further major outbreaks.

Shouldn't have been necessary though.

Just hope we can see the boys play in round 1 at the G. I have looked forward for that ever since we were forced to watch the Carlton V Melbourne game in our lounge rooms between the two VIC lockdowns - and for those that attend every game in VIC, it was a strange and not particularly great feeling.

It will be the final nail for us VICS if all the clubs head off to SE Queensland just in time for round 1 and stay up there the entire season. I get the feeling hubs are more than just a contingency this year and the AFL be willing to ditch Victoria at the flick of a switch if the other state governments close their borders to us on the back of 1 community transmissible case - which they will.

I feel your pain LH but as one with family overseas i'm hearing some real horror stories. i'd much prefer a 5 day lockdown compared to overflowing ICU's.

Agree re processes. It's very apparent that our contract tracing system isn't fit for purpose.

The massive advantage of living on an Island, which is a long way from most.  The only way this virus is getting in is through hotel Quarantine.

On the Footy, will be interesting is our lockdown is extended if the AFL impose the same training restrictions across the entire competition.  From memory they did this last year.

I do too Bda in California and London. We are in heaven here by comparison.

If the football is messed up I will put it down as a small price to pay.

One lives in Butte County California approx. 300 000 people. They have had more deaths than all of Australia so far.

I think the approach will be different this year. For Lockdowns 1 and 2, we really didn't know how to respond to an outbreak and what controls need to be activated where and when. 

I really cant see a wave 3 happening as the govt will act swiftly as they have recently with a 5 day lockdown. So we may have the odd temporary short-lived lockdown but i think the concept of hubs will probably not be necessary. 

It does beg the question of what happens when there is a temp shutdown and the states shut borders with an effected state - particularly when you have a team travelling from / to the effected state.  there maybe last minute fixture changes or postponed rounds. I think the afl should plan for 4-5 mid week fixtures for teams effected, but how you make the fair i couldnt say.

While footballers aren't the tip of the spear as far as vaccine rollout goes, you'd expect that for the economic/social significance compared to just a couple of thousand jabs required they would be in the fairly early rounds.

Of course, we're still waiting to see exactly what community-level protection the various vaccines offer.  One strange case came up in Germany recently where multiple people at an aged care facility tested positive despite having been vaccinated.  On the one hand, it was a little worrying, on the other hand, pre-vaccine the same circumstances would have meant the entire care centre infected and dozens of people dead.  It did appear that even in this incident the vaccines a) provided really effective suppression of transmission, and b) eliminated symptoms to the point where Covid was only detected due to routine screening!

It is reasonable to expect that by very early in the season the AFL clubs will be generally vaccinated and highly safe.  The only way I can see Covid seriously derailing the season again is if the Demons are top of the ladder by August and a new mutant COVID-MFCSS strain breaks out.

The full fixture for Round 4 was released over the weekend I believe od. We have the Dogs away on Sunday arvo (3:10pm), ticketing details for Victorian matches haven’t been released as yet for obvious reasons.

From over here I would just say please do what it takes and stay on the side of extreme caution. The feeling in Britain is that Australia has done very well and is an example to follow in certain areas such as "go hard, go early". Massive errors were made here and the situation is a disaster with over 116,000 deaths. 

The vaccination program is going very well, they have got that right. I get my first one tomorrow. However there are still dark days ahesd.
