Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

NOOOOOO WAY

And I'll reference my comments with the Caveat, that, given the History of head knocks there is NO WAY we should contemplate this for medical reasons only. I shudder to think what another one would do. No!

Concur PF. Also we had  2-3 years with KK and know what head knocks can do. I just hope he gets on with his life and enjoys it.

We took the punt on KK, it failed. We took the punt on Bennell, didn’t go so well. I don’t see any need for us to take a punt on Paddy when we actually do have depth in that area. Ultimately he would still be behind Tom, LJ, and Brown anyway.

I also cringe at the thought of him playing footy and taking one more hard hit that could impact him long term (what he’s been through I can’t imagine it hasn’t already).

Garry Lyon is very close to the McCartin family and good on him for supporting the kid.

I have only media knowledge of Paddy's concussion issues and what he went thru in 2019 sounded horrendous.  He had no lifestyle at all.  All credit to him for getting to a point where he could be recruited.  I think he spent some time training with Sydney late last year.  But he is a knock or two away from a life damaging injury if not now in the future. If he was my son I would encourage him to find another career.

From an mfc view I don't think it is worth the risk in part because there is no way of knowing how many games he could play and we could easily end up with 3 tall fwds out for a large part of the season.  I would hate for it to be like KK.

We have T Mc, M Brown, LJ and cameos from Petty to play the tall fwd role(s).  For years Richmond played and won a flag with only one tall fwd building a fleet of small players around him.  With the recruitment of Bowey, Laurie plus Kozzie, Spargo etc we can have a high performing fwd line with our list, as long as the game plan maximises the talents we have.

No from me.

The AFL need short term contracts, that can be cancelled anytime for special cases like Pat.

Agree with all you’ve said except that McCartin at his best is clearly better than Mitch Brown (unless it was Ben Brown you were referring to).

On footy talent alone, I’d be taking McCartin. But we need to stop taking punts on the Bennells and KK’s of the world and invest in surer bets.

I'd love for us to pickup a stop-gap tall forward to get us through the first month.

Yes, we might be able to get by with TMac, LJ and Mitch but the forward line is our glaring weakness. If we lose one of those guys and we're 0-4, 2021 is just about a write-off.

Not sure about McCartin, but some insurance would be nice.

Could we pick him up and cut midseason? when the weed will be back and Ben Brown has had 5 to 8 games under his belt

As is usually the case, it's not simply a matter of "yes", "no" or "take a punt".

It's a matter of his fitness for football, his personal motivation and wellbeing, the likely length and risk for his future in football, what it would cost the club in terms of his contract conditions and length, and whether those factors outweigh any health risk. McCartin was a #1 draft pick after all.

There's a big difference between offering, say, a 2-3 year contract and offering a rookie position on basically match payments. The club would consider all that in a decision.

My feeling is "no", but there would be a lot to consider.

My feeling is NO out of consideration of all facts and health factors for Paddy.

At the same time I hope that if Paddy wants to play he gets an opportunity.

Last year  we gave Harley a chance but since feel That Paddy is similar to Weid in that he needs to produce form Early on the make it worthwhile.  His form to be fair when available had not been great either. Realise it is a harsh call but entirely realistic one for our Club.

No, simply as his long term quality of life is far more important.  He should go play some low end social footy if  he still wants to play.  I can see him getting hit hard pretty early int he season and that being the end of his career and maybe more for good.

All very well, but what level he aspires to is something for Paddy to make, and some club to accept.

More likely to get hit behind the play in a lower level

If he were ever considered a spot for us I would much prefer us offering a place at Casey (perhaps someone could shed light on if this is possible) and say to him let’s see how you go in competitive footy before the mid-season draft. Is it a similar system where you can nominate players to have first dibs on?

But he’d have to be out there playing regular footy with zero symptoms before a place would be considered. And even then it just doesn’t sit well with me.

Concussion aside he hasn't played since 2018. He played 35 games in four years. He is a key forward who's never kicked more than 2 goals in a game. Averages less than a goal a game. The answer is clearly a resounding NO. He's not good enough on exposed form.

THEN you add in the concussion issues. FMD, how anyone could even consider this beggars belief.

I generally agree with your sentiments, so it’s just nitpicking , but I do remember he kicked 3 in a drawn game in 2018 sometime.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
