Did Jimmy Stynes ever cop racial abuse ?

Genuine question here - I'm not trying to stir up any current controversies.  I seem to recall Jim complaining of being racially abused during his playing days however I cannot find any reference to this matter on the web or even in his biography.  Do any Demonlanders recall this or am i imagining it.

Of course he would have been called names, but like wogs like me we can't complain, and when we do no one cares, or even call it racism.

Don't know if this answers the question, but this is from The Australian dated 12 January 2010 by Lanai Vasek,

'Following his retirement from the game in 1998, Stynes assumed the role of anti-racism officer for the AFL. At the time, he said the cause was "extremely close to his heart" due to his astonishment at the level of racial abuse he and other players had experienced during their careers.'

The article does not go on to mention any specific incidents, but this shows that racism knows no bounds.

If Jim received any racist abuse when playing it would be due to him being caucasian, not irish. There's the widely peddled myth of course that they're all a bit thick but in my time living there I found them to be anything but.

Hey Demonstone. Maybe I could've explained that a little better. What I was trying to say was that being irish is a nationality, not a race.

I recall going to a supporters  dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1996 where Jim was the main speaker He told of playing a reserves match against Essendon early in his career where they they were making disparaging remarks about Ireland so he meted out the appropriate retaliation to the main culprit after that he was chased around the ground by almost the entire Essendon team trying to bash him. So yes he was abused based on his nationality.

Yup, agreed. Hence the reason he wouldn't have been on the wrong end of racist abuse. I bet whoever did abuse him though only did it the once.

Under Section 9 of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 nationality is included in those criteria covered by the act as unlawful

On page 33 of the book ‘Sport and Post Colonialism’ by John Bale and Mike Cronin, “Jim Stynes, originally from Ireland, described his astonishment at the level of racial abuse he had experienced over the course of a 12 year career”.

Just as pathetic was Robert Walls (Brisbane coach) comments after he found out one of the players (Matthew Kennedy) ripped it in half, "Did he really tear it in half? I wish I'd seen it, it would have been the highlight of the match". [censored]

I think this subject is going to far ,lets not take the fun out of life,taking the micky out of someone is not racism tearing up a hat is not racism .i am sure Jim would have said his fair share out on the ground as well.Walls would have been joking because it was funny ,not racist

Happens everywhere. You go and live in another country and report back. As far as Aussies give it out, most can laugh when they get it back as well.
