And once they green light Eddie to be the club's spokesperson surely to goodness the CEO is also at that presser. Or even better they release a carefully worded written response and schedule a presser for say Friday to create some space and control.      

What a complete shambles from a governance perspective.

Eddie will be publicly painted as a martyr in that he will say that the issue had become about him and that it should be about the way in which Collingwood has openly dealt with the issue.

I haven't seen one sponsor come out at say this is not acceptable.

I am finding it very hard to disagree with the above binman, it will go down as a worst way case study for future generations.

It is barely 24 hours ago. Sometimes the results are not immediately apparent. You can bet some of them have been in contact with the Pies suggesting Eddy step aside as a minimum.

yes but only spilled over to the general public very recently, sponsor react when they have little choice. As long as it is not effecting them direct they look the other way.

early dec: initial findings of the report given to the board, including a nike board member
mid dec: eddie announces he'll leave at the end of 2021
late dec: full report given to the cfc board
early jan: nike confirms new apparel deal with cfc
late jan: full report leaks to the public
early feb: yesterday's gloriously awful press conference

now the query will be what comes next...

Well it did not take long for the old boys club to swing into action with Gil talking about it being a courageous decision by Eddy and the pies to initiate  the review. Gil defending was as sure as the sun rises tomorrow.

As someone who managed a sponsorship relationship with an AFL club we would be asking questions about all of this and reviewing our contract from when the report was first noted as going to take place. ie oh I see an independent review is happening into racism at the club... do tell... and when will we know the outcome of it BEFORE the public...

exactly my point @Cards13 - i would suspect that eddie's surprise retirement tour announcement was done in the wake of requirements from sponsors in the wake of the initial findings in the report being circulated at a high level

It's fun watching Collingwood get belted but there must be some ripper skeletons in everyone's closet. Difference is most clubs would probably just flat out apologise instead of trying to spin it like a great triumph.

They came out and unreservedly apologised.

We do have a history!

The most recent I recall is in the Neeld days (any surprise given he was ex Collingwood) when reportedly Davey (and maybe others) approached Misfud at the AFL.  It was all a bit of a mess of the 'he said, I said' variety and Misfud apologised for misunderstanding. 

I doubt PJ did an internal review when appointed or just knew what was required and set about righting the wrongs.  Not sure if that is what triggered the Matty Whelan role being created but it was a good move. 

We also developed a charter to engage with aboriginal communities (can't recall what it is called) and what we stand for in that regard.  Sometimes these can not be worth the paper they are written on but I feel mfc takes our obligations seriously.

And our investment with the MCG community oval in Alice.

Not saying we should pat ourselves on the back but I feel we have come some way but still lots more to do.  Collingwood has no idea and done precious little.

I even had to laugh at their attempts to say they tried to get indigenous players in the draft.  But they were all tied to Academies so those clubs matched the bid.  Surprise, Surprise!  So were they even serious of trying to get indigenous players to the club...

Any chance the report contains evidence? Not saying it does; not saying doesn't; I haven't read it yet. But if the conclusions are validly drawn from credible evidence, they're probably legitimate. Legitimate enough. Regardless of political point of view, certainly of identity, then it should be taken seriously, and death with.

That Murphy said the report didn't mean the people were racist, well I'm not sure how he explains the 'systemic racism' it if isn't by the people.  His comment means there were no perpetrators so no-one can be held to account (or sued).  No specific cases investigated so no names of who the victims of 'systemic racism' were so no-one can take legal action against them.  

Which all means no compensation to be made.

That whole sh..show had all the hallmarks of deny, deny, deny. 

As an aside has anyone seen what any of the 18 recommendations are? 

The definition of systematic racism doesn’t require any one individual to be racist. Collingwood have a point when they say that. The systems in place can simply discriminate against races by inadvertent design or ignorance. 
 

Depending on the authors threshold for what thoughtlessness or ignorance actually is they might be able to label thousands of institutions as systematically racist.

The issue for the Pies is making those kind of distinctions which might usually be correct when they have at least the Lumumba situation unresolved.

Can't remember exact details, but PJ has been working on a racism/cultural report for the AFL for a while too.
