Arr the old 426. The weid and brown have been that for a couple of weeks. Does that mean they should have been listed as 628 or did the second language pop  it's head up again.

Before round 1.  Light duties.  Running and running and more running only.  No contested work. No jumping.  No sharp objects. No cooking.  No heavy labour.  ???Break out the cotton wool imv. We need everyone fit and available.

I'll get this out here now: think we're going to really struggle in at least the first part of this year. We've got our two main talls out of the forward line, so not only will they miss a lot of training, the crucial point is that the rest of the team will have missed a LOT of training with them. Systems? Mid-Forward connection? Forget it.

Add to that, similar comments for the absence of Kozzie, Brayshaw and Viney, where the lack of training time together will have consequences on the whole team, regardless of how the individuals can get back into shape.

Finally, throw a few others into a similar basket: Melksham and Hibberd, but also players like Salem.

Sure, we can eventually get these players back on the field. But we can never make up for the lost training TOGETHER.

Agree 100%. Just don’t see how we can kick a winning score with the outs we have. Wouldn’t be surprised if we are 0/6, then the season is gone. We just don’t have the depth to cover. Depressing.

Not a good situation Re injuries with 10 days to go to Round 1. There are some critical players that are uncertain.

From the list above I think that the following players will definately line up:

Oliver - rested on Monday

Salem - Hammy twinge a lot of time to get it right from the time of injury

May - 12 day protocol, good to go if reports are correct and he ha no adverse reactions.

The following players need to play the VFL practicce match coming up to have a chance of being there Round 1:

Brayshaw - Played on Monday. will benefit from the run

Hibberd - Needs the run may not have the fitness for R1

Melksham - see Hibberd

Smith - see Hibberd

Viney to miss R1 should be good to go after that.

Brown/Wiedeman - 426 weeks Posted when? May be ready for round 3 to 5?

The other three out for season or indefinately.

My take? Hibberd, Melksham and Smith will not be ready for R1. the rest should be ok.

How exactly are fitness staff to blame for players getting injured?  What are they doing wrong?

Some people seem to be laying the ground work for a 'pre-season, injury based excuse' in case we don't do well in 2021.

And at first glance the injury list doesn't look good.  But on closer inspection:

• 7 of our best/better players are 'Test'.  .
• 4 of those:  J.  Smith, Salem, Oliver and May have completed all the pre-season.  
• The other 3:  Brayshaw, Hibberd and Melksham have many pre-seasons under their belt so match practice may be an issue for just the first few games but not a reason to derail the season.
• Brayshaw last week played and is playing in the VFL this week.
• Those 7 players and Viney are highly experienced and have played together for years so if they don't know and practiced each others games or know the overall game plan by now we are in a world of hurt. 
• Picket, Weidemen and B. Brown have missed the second half of the preseason.  Picket will take some time to get into the season and we will miss Weidemen and Brown for quite a while.
• The others are depth players who probably wouldn't get a game unless there were multiple injuries in their role. 

So, imv the injury list size and some players not practicing together in this preason are not a reason to start thinking of excuses for the year.

Some perspective is required.

I think we can reasonably expect to add Oliver, Brayshaw, Melksham, Salem and Pickett to the team that played the Dogs - they are some handy ins.

I'm not sure where the Hibberd "test" is coming from - he's listed as "TBA" on the AFL website and seems to have been in rehab for an extended period so I'm not expecting him to play early.

Yes, certainly some very handy ins.  My guess is most teams will be lacking match practice in the early games in part because of the shorter preseason and in part lack of practice games.  So we shouldn't be too rusty in comparison to say Freo or the Saints who we play in the early rounds.

Not sure Hibberd is in our starting 22 anymore so I don't mind if he isn't available for a while.  We play Salem, Rivers and maybe Bowey/Jetta/J.Smith until he is fit enough to play regularly.

There is a game this week V's Box Hill.

You'd imagine Melksham will play this week as he did most of the training yesterday and if Brayshaw gets through ok, he'll certainly play round 1. Melksham maybe for round 2.

Hibberd was in full training yesterday according to reports but has been in rehab the entire pre season so a round 3-4 return looks more likely you'd think.

It is disappointing, he does have much to offer our team when played in the correct position with teammates who, using eyes-up, bother to see him in forward line space(s) and when on a lead, or clear from an opponent, can mark and kick through the big sticks quite bluddey well. Hope he recovers from this set-back, well. He should be better used - he is the play maker type, not suited to throwing himself into the fray recklessly.

Sure, we can eventually get these players back on the field. But we can never make up for the lost training TOGETHER.

Good teams train and play systems so you don’t struggle nearly as much when integrating individuals. 

The majority of the back 7 have trained together over the summer, and played together last year. Same goes for Gawn and experienced mids even if they are mixing up their systems with a new assistant coach. The injuries shouldn’t be an excuse for the backline set up or clearance problems. 

I agree with you on the key forwards. The silver lining is they’ve been out for long enough that Tom and rucks have taken their places and had time and match practice in that role. It will certainly be a challenge trying to bring them back from injury.
