Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Following the very poor showing yesterday, I'd like to send TMac, Spargo, Baker, AVB, Harmes, Tomlinson, Jetta, Jones, Jordon, Sparrow and Bedford back to the VFL next weekend to try and earn themselves a spot for Round 1. Chock certainly has his hands full improving the skills of this lot.

However, given that it is likely that all of Viney, BB, Weid, Hibberd and Melksham will be out for Round 1, some of the above will get call ups, but hopefully only based on performance.

My team would be:

Rivers May Lever

Hunt Petty Salem

Langdon Petracca Tomlinson

Pickett MBrown Fritsch

Chandler TMac Jackson

Gawn Brayshaw Oliver

INT: ANB Jones Bowey Harmes.

To me, Petty has to come in, and therefore, until we have a better option (which I don't think will be any time this year) I'd move Tomlinson onto the wing - its what we bought him for and he is the model we based getting Rosman on.

Given the lack of form of our injury free key forwards, I think we need to entrust Mitch Brown to the CHF role for now, and put TMac back to FF where I think he played his best footy back in 2018. That should also free up Jackson from having the best defenders on him (at least initially).

When it came to picking the interchange players, I found I couldn't find one player that would make the best 22 in virtually any other AFL team. I may have forgotten someone but the lack of depth really concerns me. When we get back our injured players, these guys will struggle to make the bench IMO, unless they dramatically improve their skills and their form. That's a bit harsh on Bowey, who I think will become a player. he certainly has the disposal skills we so desperately need.

I think Tonlinsion on the wing is the right move to start the season...  isnt that why we recruited him, to help us on the wide open spaces of the MCG where we struggle to win games?

We didn't play there last season so we haven't even seen what he can do for us yet.

We have seen Tomlinson on the wing and he didn’t cut it which is why he was tried back, maybe we could try Salem on the wing, not sure who then plays off the back half In his place but I like the idea of Salem transitioning the ball into the fwd line

B: Rivers May Lever
HB: Salem Tomlinson Hunt
C: Langdon Petracca Melksham
HF: Jones TMac ANB
F: Jackson Fritsch Pickett
R: Gawn Oliver Harmes
I: Brayshaw, Jordon/Sparrow, Jetta/Bowey, Spargo/Chandler

I'd like to bite the bullet and bring Petty in as soon as possible and that would also free Tomlinson up to pinch hit but we'll probably stick with the current backline set-up particularly against Freo who are short of tall forward options.

We need to see Brayshaw, Pickett, Melksham and maybe Salem get a successful solid hit-out with Casey v Box Hill this weekend.

Viney is confirmed out, Hibberd hasn't got near fitness, I just can't have Baker or AVB in the side.

Bowey looked alright but surely a bit premature for a round 1 selection??

I know we’re running thin but he’s no where near physically ready and wasn’t even selected in the A team game against the Tigers

My Round 1 team

RIVERS MAY LEVER

HUNT TOMLIMSON SALAM

LANGDON PATRACCA ANB

JONES JACKSON PICKETT

FRITSCH TMAC CHANDLER

GAWN OLIVER HARMES

I: BRAYSHAW VANDENBERG BOWY JETTA

Only pick players 100% fit and I'd pick experienced players over young ones in the early rounds try to get off to a good start and build momentum.

Also wouldn't mind swapping ANB and Salam see how they go and T Mac and Tomlinson we might find a bit of flexibility to the team.

JONES JETTA VANDENBERG get games because Viney BB Wied and Melky injuries.

Thoughts thanks?

Sorry NC but I think that's a bit harsh on Harmes. From what I saw he was expected to be our number one mid for the day and also expected to try and shutdown Bont/Macrae. Some will try and say that the number one should have been Trac but he doesn't have a shutdown side and had little real influence in the midfield hence his move forward in the last, successfully to some extent. I also think the call on Baker is premature. Many think he should be as good on his wing as Langdon is on his. What I see is development in Baker under a fair bit of pressure. The opposition know his is the weak side wing and are trying to exploit that. Conversely, we are trying to use the Langdon wing because Langdon is more effective. What this amounts to however is a discrepancy that I'm sure the coaches understand. We need a better player than Langdon to take Bakers wing. Is that player Tomlinson? Clearly not. I would prefer Baker continued to develop in the position and was impressed with his performance in the game against Richmond when he continually kept his width and didn't get sucked up into the contest. I think it's important to acknowledge that the Dogs play a great brand of Football that suits the Marvel dimensions. We get to play them twice during the regular season and it will be interesting to see how they play the wider wings of the MCG. I think we will give Baker plenty of opportunity to cement his wing with games at the MCG and therefore think he's a lock for round one.

Frankly, I think talk of any of the first year players being tried on a wing in the early rounds is ludicrous and as for Salem I believe he is better positioned to hit up the likes of Baker and Langdon or targets further afield as appropriate.

Good line up.

I like ANB on wing. I suspect Goody will persist with Baker a bit longer.

Probably only one of Jetta / Bowey.

Can’t see Tomlinson moving out of defence now. So TMac is fwd or wing or bust. I like him on the wing personally.

For all the talk of good depth, we’re looking far from solid with only a few out.

My selection (above) as well. It seems balanced and agree with your discussion points. Petty surely must get a moment to step into the bigtime - he has talent and with an adjusting team mentality, he could be an answer; what's more, there is an option for him if he does not play well: the bench brigade having one stock backman, TMac moving back, Vanders stepping up. With our 'outs', it is going to be a big 'un and one that with which we will struggle anyway. Brown could be serviceable, as well - he gets to positions well and can take that mark. He does kick accurately. From what I have observed as a team member, Brown is sadly seldom 'seen' by out obsessed 'long-bombers' and anyway, it is time for shorter hit-ups into and across the forward line.

Jones will be valuable for short-term ball aggression from the bench, and must keep the eyes down. His experience and ball nouse were well displayed against the Tigers no matter who they utilised to negate him. He does what Oliver should be doing - running to space before delivery using teammates as stepping stones in the chain.

'Carna Dees!

My team for Round 1 assuming they are fit:

B:      Bowey              May                  Lever

HB:   Salem               Petty                Rivers

C :     Tomlinson       Oliver               Langdon

HF:    Harmes           Jackson          Neal-Bullen

F:       Fritsch             McDonald        Pickett

R:       Gawn               Petracca          Brayshaw

Int:    Sparrow           Hunt                  Chandler

Jones

Emg:  Jordon            Jetta                Spargo        Baker

Key thoughts:

Petty - this guy has earned a spot through solid performances and I feel he is a big part of our future backline at 197cm and fairly mobile for a tall. Tomlinson can rotate through the wing and half back and even chuck him forward if we need another marking option.

Bowey - I like the way he played and we must have elite kicking in our back half. I',m not expecting him to set the world on fire and yes he may let a goal through here or there, but he has shown enough and I don't think he will get much benefit playing at Casey. Can also go through the wings as required. Jetta is past it and should only be played if needed to cover injuries in the back half.

Neal-Bullen - he has earned his spot with strong showings in the pre-season and is another option to run through the wings with his huge tank.

Like it.  Probably only change I would make is to bring in Baker onto the bench instead of Chandler.  Just adds more flexibility.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
