Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Id be really interested in his thoughts about where the game is heading in terms of game style, tactics etc and what implications that has for the sort of players and attributes clubs will be looking to draft

(Note: I reckon he is a terrific footy brain and this sort of forward thinking would be a big part of a good recruiter's tool kit ie not simply focused on short term needs of the club they work for.

I suspect selecting rosman might be informed by that sort of forward thinking. And same goes for Jackson lsdt year -  talls that are super athletes and can play mutiple roles and positions).

Three questions for mine;

1. Has any club ever been unhappy with their draft results on the night of the draft?

2. What is the logic behind our first two selections in particular?  Both sub-180cm, aimed at playing the small forward role where we used a first round pick last year to fill that need (Kosi) while also having Spargo on the list.  Yes, they have claimed that both of these new players can push up on to the wing, but given what the modern wingman look like (see Langdon, as well as the drafting of Rosman, a 194cm wing), I just see these two selections as head-scratching at the least.  Please don't allow the "plays taller than their height" line - it's a different game playing against men.

3. During the trade period we were told about the need for another wingman to compliment Langdon, then when we missed out on Smith from Hawthorn, we were then told that we were confident with stock currently on our list filling that spot (presumably Baker, Rivers, Tomlinson, et al).  We've now gone out and drafted a tall winger (Rosman), and picked two midgets that might be able to rotate through that position.

Following on from above,

1. we had a dearth of smalls a few years ago and now we have gone all in on speed, and smalls. Why so many? Do you ever draft because you think some might fail?

2. How much of this is based around Richmonds strategy?

3. Which if the previous draftees that we haven't seen much of look the most promising to become A graders? Petty, Jordan, Neitschke, Lockhart, Baker, Sparrow?

If Max Holmes was the player he wanted then if he is a professional recruiter he should not admit it to the MFC public because it is a inhouse type of thing.

I wanted the MFC to pick Cripps, not Morton and Martin but they thought they knew better but I was not on the recruiting panel.

Yeah wish we had Jason Taylor calling the shots around about the time players like Morton, Cook, Gysberts , and tapscots names were called out for the club.

Can't help thinking worrying about next year is unwise snd stress inducing.

Each year we manufacture high picks and if Josh M has left one legacy that is it. We also have had good results in the trade period recently so we manage to say in the hunt even if our No 1 oicksste evident in advance.

Answer to The Chazz ( And Paulo May be interested)

First of all  Chazz you have fallen fir the
3 card trick!

Automatically dismissing Any player BELOW 180 cm ( 6 ft) and calling a 179 cm recruit a "MIDGET".

That is why we haven't got a rounded list because our 181cm to 185 cm wingers and half forwards and the occasional below 180 cm players haven hit the role nailed due to skills and major impact qualities to succeed.

Garlett had speed and  Elusiveness Do he was a good choice. Flash Davey  and Austin Wonnamirri also had pace and ball skills.

But ANB Hannan and many others have only a limited ability to play that role.

IF you viewed the highlights of both Laurie and Bowey it stood out like thevproverbial their pace elusiveness ball handling evasion and side  stepping skills, kicking for  goals and the thirst for the contest plus Bowey can take a mark!

Most  of these skills are Inborn In each player and are natural to their method of play So they don't have to learn like ANB Does  without Any particular highlight and having got the ball his conversion is dodgy at best. Oh and all their coaches the AFL gurus Sheehan and Twomey plus JT have seen enough to know that although they are smallish in Stature that  their elite disposal skills are also a huge part of their game.

Spargo is IMO a good distributor of the ball but doesn't at this stage impact the game hugely. Kossie tuns well Is lightning quick  and is learning his craft and will be a good/ great player fir us.

BUT Laurie and Bowey are professional style potential elite A graders with bells and whistles ie many tricks that can play wing HFF FP centre and even hBF and maybe on the ball During their career.

Writing them off is like saying a Small horse can't win or that a small player can't bowl. Sport is diversified these days and think of Caleb Daniel by 2 (even better msybe) with Kossie and Spargs improving our smalls can be a strength instead of an obvious weakness in numbers and class.

Oh just to complicate we look like having a 194cm versatile winger come forward and maybe CHB or flanker intercepting In the team, with elite endurance and pace for his size. Should he bible verse a key position player then due to his height ?

22 players are a  team and it's how they coexist and perform ie with a gxme plan that still needs improving that will enable  us to rise to the level required to Win that elusive flag/s that both you and I yearn For every year., not whether we have 3 under 180 cm or 5 (Tigers have 8 in their team) in that lineup that triumphs.

Go to 11:29 @DeeSpencer

I think you owe Jason Taylor an apology. Not only did you kick up a big fuss over the Max Holmes debacle you still didn't provide any evidence.

Jason Taylor pretty much confirmed that while we were interested to some degree,  we had hoped that he would be there at our 3rd pick.

Taylor was not fazed one bit that Geelong jumped in early.

Some other key notes.

- Jack Carroll was a player of interest, but the order of players they had he just wasn't in that position for them to draft him.

- Deakyn Smith will be training with the Dees after the new year.

- Taj Woewodin has been invited to train after the new year.

- Still deciding whether to offer Kobe Farmer an opportunity or not.

How could anyone accurately rate the overall strength of next year's draft at this stage when everyone has been saying that this year's crop is underexposed?  That goes double at least for next year's crop.

Underexposed yes (but more so in vic as the other states played junior footy this year), but they track kids from under 11s so I suspect they have a pretty good handle on who is the group of say the best 80-100 players for the following years draft in any given year. The challenge this year would have been ranking that group.

On the Josh Mahoney discussion, I would expect a thank you or the like will take place at the AGM.

You're probably right. He had only finished up a few days before the members forum and perhaps it was bit of a surprise. The AGM is in February, so plenty of time to process and make sure they acknowledge his contribution.

Thanks to all for organizing the interview with JT - he is certainly a straightshooter - hopefully our forwards will capture a lot of that in 2021 :)

I'm hoping that the 3 Victorian lads have slipped under the radar a bit given their lack of exposed form in 2020. Obviously this can go both ways but he seemed quietly confident. I realize that Rosman is a bit of a smoky but he seemed genuinely keen on his potential - lets hope he can develop quickly and take hold on one wing as his own

Is Tay eligible for this year or is it more for 2021. So if Deakyn, Taj and maybe Kobe, any idea who the other 3 might be...?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
