Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Pert has just rubber stamped one of the Top development coaches in the AFL, who has runs on the Board.

IOW he has recruited a top football person to go with Yze In football as well as hired a fitness guru of world standard and a highly regarded assistant.

If Perth not doing his job then I don't know who is???

Josh Mahoney will leave a legacy and it could well be a flag after his tireless draft and recruiting efforts. Again tomorrow night JT will have 3 to 4 good Chances to give us another group of youngsters to make a name fir themselves and be a part of history at our great Club

Thank  you Josh and good luck.

Some fair points, there.

I'm probably going to be on my own here, but I think the game has passed  Mark Williams by and I'm not sure he's the man to develop our young guys.

I'm really surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response both here and on social media to his appointment.

I'm no expert and would be stoked to be proven wrong but how many times have we seen older coaches move out of the elite level, come back and struggle to grasp what they need to be successful?

It’s interesting to note the tone of the Mahoney thread in the context of the Williams thread. I think Josh was held in very high esteem until Bartlett brought Pert over. Then he became some what of a whipping boy until his role was diminished after this season, making his staying at the club virtually untenable. I think Josh worked very hard for the club, but the chips fell differently around him and it forced him out.

Let’s see what happens with Williams. I sometimes feel like Demonland in the off-season is wildly optimistic simply because it’s been so long since we’ve seen the team lose, and fresh blood doesn’t bare the blame of past losses. Time will tell.

Think a good decision. Thirteen years at one place is a good innings. Change is a part of any healthy organisation. Fresh insights, fresh motivation and new faces often bring a spike in performance.

Just my opinion, but no senior manager should be their position for more than five years!

Been there for far too long for my liking and I am delighted he's going.

I agree.  Far to long and for what results?

I wish Josh all the best. He worked hard whilst here. I think he should have left with PJ, but i don’t hold that against him

having heard Williams interviewed on Radio multiple times

He will be a very positive influence around the FD and just maybe, a missing piece.

I don’t know what to think about this. Guess I’ve got to trust the club.

Mahoney always struck me as a competent and loyal MFC guy - he impressed me.

He was also fantastic at upgrading our lowly draft picks.

I wish him all the best at EFC. Not too much luck, but definitely some luck.

Personally I was a fan of his, when he targeted players to get from other clubs we mostly got them over the line. He was highly regarded by Paul Roos and I think he made some good moves throughout his tenure, that said I’m not super sad for him to go. The reason behind that is that he has been in his job for quite a while, and while we have improved since he began we haven’t made enough inroads to say he’s been successful.

For that reason I think a change will be good for both the club and Josh. If he was going anywhere else I’d say good luck to him but I gotta say I hope Essendon continue their downward trajectory! That said I hope it’s through no fault of his own and he’s able to continue to have a good career in footy.

EDIT: is it likely we’ll promote someone internally to take on the role he’s filled for the last couple of seasons or try to bring someone in from outside?

You really are a gronk.

Thanks for your service, Josh. Would have loved him in our corner for this draft, but the time was probably right. I never like former employees having IP on you. Hopefully Essendon won't be competing with us any time soon.

Only over the last 4/5 years, I remember him saying at a partner presentation his calls wouldn’t be answered by player agents for a number of years before we drafting ok. I remember the David Rodan and Cam Pedersen years.

Mahoney's professionalism through some of the worst periods of the MFC history has been outstanding. He and the recruiting team have been ahead of the game when it comes to obtaining the best possible draft position each year. He and his team have not gone about drafting the best available. They have chosen the best available for the Melbourne Football Club and the team.

I believe he will be missed. Essendon have gained a very good strategist.

He got some things right, others wrong. Would have learnt a lot from his time at the club. From the outside looking in, it did appear as though he got better as time went on. Looks a reasonable addition by Essendon, as they now get a more experienced and polished Mahoney than we had early. Seems a good decision for all 3 parties.

No coincidence that Mahoney has been a senior member of the football department for 13 seasons, during which time we have played finals just once. He hasn't been able to get the right support network for Goodwin in that time, and we have a playing group that stills picks and chooses when it wants to play.

His appalling contract management has held us back for years, to say nothing of signing off on years of ridiculous pick trading which leaves us without a meaningful selection in next year's super draft.

Essendon are welcome to him - they deserve each other.

Why do you say its going to be a super draft Poita? I think its going to be a bigger lottery than this year.

Plus we can always trade back into next years first round just like we did this year.

You know a club is far from being solid when the reshuffling, pushing out the door and sackings continue for consecutive years.

Two years gone and how many names from coaches through to FD personnel have gone?

Would love to see a list.

We're a strange club.

Basically all on Goodwin this year and if we fail to make the 8, we'll start seeing players want to leave. You can bank it.

After a decade of failed rebuilds resulting in an AFL intervention in which we were basically given Paul Roos and Peter Jackson on  platter, we finally get a rebuild right and now we find ourselves here. An supremely talented but under-performing list with a dysfunctional coaching group and FD which is in no way stabilizing and in my view is having a much greater impact on our playing group then many would like to think.

Never ceases to amaze. Gone from die hard fan to interested observer. Almost as if I'm watching an Attenborough doco at times.

Worst post in Demonland history.

A departure of a staff member of 13 years isn't a reshuffle.

People move on.

I'm guessing if we kept all the same staff you would say we were stale.

Some 'recency effect' happening here with folks focusing on pick swaps, pick upgrades and list management 'success'.

Looking back over his 13 years, Mahoney was a coach the day we scored 186.  He presided over assistant coaching selections and list management decisions during the Neeld years when he was Football Manager and we had a decent swag of top 10 picks.  It was only after Taylor came on board and under Roos' guidance that our list improved.

More recently he presided over the creation of the most inexperienced line coaching panels under Goodwin, who was himself inexperienced.  Last year he presided over a coaching reshuffle and then an EOY review that probably cost him his job as they were repeated this year.  So overall I don't view his tenure as a success for MFC.

Its easy to be bedazzled by recent fancy pick swaps.  Only time will tell if they were worth while.

I've always thought his strengths are in administration, contract management etc and he has been excellent representing us in the media.  I saw him at the fan forum last year and was very impressed.

But it was time to go.  I wish him well and hope his new job plays to his strengths.

There was positional reshuffling before he decided to go, mate.

Get the facts right.

My post was in regards to the number of off-field changes we've made over the last two years which is clearly alarming.

I'll continue to question the decisions of the club until we see the "sustained success" that has been bandied about from the Roos and Jackson rebuild.

The club has continued to put unwavering faith in Goodwin and his vision which has seen everyone else around and even above him go. That's a big deal and something that had a negative impact on the group this year. We sorely lacked quality assistant coaches for one and I think supporters underestimate the ripple effect that had in a variety of ways across the club.

I'm a different kind of supporter to the happy-go-luckies and from past interactions with you, I understand you're one of them. Good for you.

I don't really like digging up old posts/threads (heaven knows I have posted some shockers over the years on this site!). But I really think Josh Mahoney deserves a bit more credit for the tireless work he did behind the scenes in getting guys like Lever, May, Langdon, Tomlinson, Hibberd, etc. to the Club. These guys have been huge acquisitions for us and we really need to appreciate the part Mahoney played in those trade deals. Especially when the Norm Smith medal is hanging around Lever's neck at the end of September. Go Dees!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
