Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Melbourne

Who left: Braydon Preuss, Mitch Hannan

Who arrived: Ben Brown

2020 NAB AFL Draft picks: 18, 19, 28, 50, 89

Future picks: Melbourne completed another audacious future pick-swap, handing Brisbane its 2021 first-round selection for this year's picks No.18 and 19. As part of the deal, they will also earn a future second-round pick from the Lions. They had already earned a future third-round selection from the Western Bulldogs and a fourth-round selection from North Melbourne, handing its own future fourth-round selection to Adelaide. They also received another future fourth-round pick from Brisbane, but gave it to North Melbourne as part of the Brown deal.

We say: In a canny bit of business, Melbourne effectively turned a contracted Preuss into Brown. He will partner Sam Weideman and Luke Jackson in a developing Demons forward line, following the bargain basement deal with North Melbourne. Hannan goes to the Western Bulldogs, but Melbourne improved its draft stocks following pick-swaps with Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney. That enabled the Demons to complete another pick-swap late on Thursday evening with the Lions that saw them essentially earn dual first-round selections (pick No.18 and 19) for a future first-round pick. - Riley Beveridge

Grade: 8/10 (ranked 6th)

Weird that they ranked us equal 3rd at 8/10 with Carlton and Geelong yet somehow manage to list us 6th rather than 4th (it isn't even alphabetical).

Other weird rankings:

  • GWS ranked 16th but got pick 11 for Williams (DFA), 2 extra 1st round picks for Cameron and better picks for Caldwell by standing their ground.
  • Yet Geelong ranked 4th for giving up 3 first round picks (less some back) for a player they should have got free.  Underestimated their op strategically.
  • Lions ranked 7th yet added Daniher, Cockatoo and upgraded its 2021 picks: an extra 1st and an extra 2nd.

Their rankings seem based mostly on players in and out.  Rather shallow 'analysis' not giving due weight to picks in and out. A lot of finesse is required to maximise draft positions in 2020/2021 as Mahoney has shown.

I don’t like these ratings because they’re not particularly objective and nor do they take in the entire picture of the end of season recruiting process. Every club enters this period from a different position and they have different aims. Richmond’s recruiting was always going to differ from that of Adelaide or North Melbourne. Geelong was interesting in that many were advocating that the club with the oldest list by far should start looking to freshen up its list with young blood but instead, it refreshed with experience and ends with a relatively poor hand at the draft. Even so, the Cats have a good record through Stephen Wells with its recruiting.

A better assessment would be achieved after the drafts and an even better one when a few years have passed and we’re aware of the outcome of all of the player movements including their effect on the player group. I wouldn’t be that. confident of the future today if I were a Collingwood fan.

- in fairness they have lost some high quality players and although they have a strong draft hand, they will definitely be weaker on field next year

Seen some articles online suggesting Brisbane and Carlton are winners out of trade period.. Brisbane gave up a first rounder for Daniher and grabbed Cockatoo- no guarantee either will make it on the park..

Carlton treat new player contracts like the Judd Visy deal of the century. Still no inside mid at that joint to support Cripps properly.

Brisbane got daniher for free (Essendon got pick 7 as compo from AFL I believe).

Yeah I agree. Although they negotiated well, they didn’t bring in any players of note and they don’t need more picks

Who left: Jye Caldwell, Jeremy Cameron, Aidan Corr, Zac Langdon, Zac Williams

plus Hately in the PSD. Massive losses which they won’t recover from

and from all the players their highest pick is only 10 in a compromised draft.

Along with Pies and bombers, GWS had a terrible trade period

I give us 9/10. It would’ve been 10/10 (perhaps even higher) had we landed Isaac Smith.

JM would have to be making millions day-trading on the ASX wouldn't he?

Pretty ridiculous to rank anyone based on speculative picks in a National draft this year with a bunch of kids that didn't really play much footy so exposed form is limited

Selling the farm to get early picks this year is a high risk strategy IMO

Not saying that MFC didn't do ok - they targeted a need in Brown and got the job done for a very modest cost

So far our other needs in speed , skill , excellent delivery inside 50 are still to be addressed

I doubt these are going to be sorted by picking one of two kids from the draft - hopefully I'm wrong

I do like the look of Macrae but suspect he will most likely go inside 15 so gone by the time our first pick rolls around

Geez the collywoobles are getting smashed on SEN which is well deserved imo.

The excuses that Ned Guy was dribbling out reminded me of good old Eddie's dribble when a collingwood player (cant remember his name) ACCIDENTLY went out the front door and got arrested by the police but was actually looking for the bathroom and got confused and headed out the front door instead.

Obviously the BS excuses is contagious and must all be getting lessons from the top down at good old collywobbles.

And to top it off Bucks is in his last yr of a contract so the pressure will be massive on him and Eddie. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Bloody hilarious, they are pathethic.

That looks like the current premiership window is closed and they're going back to the draft?

I'd give us 'perhaps' 10/10 for NOT landing Isaac Smith.

The trade for Brown was very good for us given the cost. And this is coming from someone who has some doubts about if our forward line will fit together next year with too many talls.

I think Preuss will be good for GWS and prove to be a negative outcome in terms of a trade. But, he was really insurance for us, so it made sense to let him go.

Hannan got a 3 year deal and we did the best we could in terms of return. It will be interesting if he gets a regular game for the Dogs. Bontempelli and English will play forward more next year (with Martin in the ruck) and they are getting another forward in the draft. And they picked up Cody Weightman last year.

Isaac Smith would have been a great addition and fit for us, so it was a shame to miss out.

It is a bit disappointing we didn't pick Collingwood's pocket for Phillips, Stephenson or Treloar, but we obviously wanted to maintain cap space and trade assets. I think we underestimated how badly the Pies needed to move players on and, in hind sight, we exited out of the race for Phillips and Treloar too early.

The pick swaps were slightly negative in terms of points, but obviously fit our strategy going into the draft and managing list sizes.

Overall, we started with a pretty weak hand in terms of assets and came out in front.

And hopefully being unable to move TMac is a blessing in disguise and he can return to being a very good AFL player.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
