Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Are we finished yet?

I don't think we would have given up a future first rounder in a supposedly better draft, if we didn't have our eye on someone in the top 10. We'll either trade them prior to draft night or during draft night IMO.

We need a nearest the pin competition on just who it is we are aiming for, and how high in the draft we will worm our way to get them!

Clearly it isn't one of the big tall forwards at the pointy end of the draft.  Clearly it isn't a chunky inside midfielder.

Oh... Archie Perkins.  Obviously.

Watching his highlights, there's something about his playing mannerisms, the thicker hair, the slight hunch, the way he carries the ball so low and in front when he runs and the way his ball drop barely leaves his hands by the time it is on his boot, that just makes me think 'Demon winger'.

A potentially interesting twist:  "The Bulldogs held their nerve on Josh Dunkley, but what might happen if the AFL holds a second trade period this year, just before the draft? Age Podcast

Michael Gleeson, Peter Ryan and Jake Niall are good reporters and doubt they would hypothesise that without something behind it.

It could be linked to the late advice of List sizes/TPP.  Only guessing tho.  Or is their a hint that the AFL may do it to help Essendon and the Bulldogs, both AFL darlings in recent years...

I'm hoping this is the end of the player trade and lets get on with the draft etc.

That's a weirdly specific thing with no precedent to suggest unless you had some knowledge.

If you give Mahoney a paperclip he'll end up trading it for a house.

There's a small story by Michael Gleeson on the back page of The Age today which includes a suggestion that there might be a second trade period, possibly just for 24 hours, prior to the draft specifically created to overcome the uncertainty of list sizes and the salary cap. The thinking is that some deals that may normally have got done were unable to be completed because of the uncertainty.

Thanks.  I didn't see that on line.  But that was my guess for a another trade because of the late advice on lists and TPP but my cynicism says it is to help Dunkley get to Ess.

In a way it is a bit unfair to announce a mini trade period after the official one.  It should be upfront.   While I have no desire to see Coll improve would they have agreed to give up Williams for pick #65 and pay $150k of his salary if they thought there was a chance of getting a better deal in a month.  More suitors may have come out of the woodwork - us for instance.  Not easy to get the attention of decision makers in the hot house hours of the final countdown.

Time will tell.

This in combination with the amount of attention trade period gets (helped that Collingwood imploding & Essendon & Carlton were heavily involved) means AFL would be keen to extend that.

Helps that there's a potentially significant trade just sitting there waiting to be done. We could benefit by trying for a potential pick  from WB, but may also give us an extra window to offload T Mac.

In normal circumstances I would agree. But this year has been anything but normal and the inability of the AFL to finalise important details such as final list numbers and salary cap could have made clubs hesitant to act. On balance, I think it's fairer to the players - and I think, in this instance, that's more important than the effect on clubs - that there is another opportunity, even if it hasn't yet been announced.

I don't have the stats.... but was Melbourne the most active player in this trade period?

We traded picks with Brisbane (twice), once with Sydney and once with Adelaide I think, along with trades in for Brown and trade outs for Hannan & Pruess.

I know the Dogs and Saints did well from their trades & Free agency, and GWS essentially didn't even need to take a pick in the 40s from Adelaide for Jackson Hately... but I'm very impressed with how we progressed our position over the course of the trade period ..... no massive moves, just subtle improvements to the point where we got 2 picks in the first round.

Excuse my cynicism LDC but this smells like giving Collingwood extra time to dump dollars and Essendon extra time to get Dunkley.

North are the club to keep tabs on.

I can’t imagine us using all of our pick allocation and we only need to use 1 selection as a minimum, although I think we’ll use at least 3.

North are in the unique situation of needing to accumulate points for NGA purposes, but also needing bulk picks to fill 11 recently-vacated roster spots (list reduction notwithstanding). I’m sure they’ll be after some DFAs, but you’d expect they’ll also play a heavy hand at the draft.

With Jones being a top end selection, they’ll be willing to move on pick 11. I’d propose 18, 19 & 28 for 11, 30 & 39. That is, if we’re hellbent on a certain player or players & not confident in then lasting til 18. I think 18 & 19 is a better hand, but I have no clue as to the prospects. I highly rate JT’s ability to disseminate the draft pool however - giving him the hand he wants would be a priority.

anddddddddd after all of that I’m wrong, no North NGA candidate.

I think I’m getting Jones confused with another. Can’t recall all the draftees & academy noms, but I thought North had one likely to be called around 11.

Update: checked and can’t find any reference to a North NGA candidate - must have just gotten confused and all of the above is obsolete.

Lachlan Jones, Port Adelaide NGA?

If we want Perkins or Macrae, we’ll have to move up into the 8-13 range.

Failing that, there will still be some handy options at our current range. I imagine we’ll be looking at pace & ball use, so these players could be around the mark (Bailey Laurie & Brayden Cook are 2 who also fit the bill, but aren’t on the list below) :

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
