Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Mahoney's Trade Plan

4 players delisted. 6-8 more possible trades or delisted. That is 10-12 off the list. Brown in. That is 9-11 spots. AFL reduce lists by 2, that is 7-9 spots. We are drafting 7-9 players? No we are not.

We will pick up a few more players in the next 10 days. We won’t  go to the draft with more than 4-5 selections.

Give Mahns a break he is just following Goody's game plan when it comes to trade time.

"Oh [censored] plan A didn't work?"

"There's always next year I guess"

Repeat.

Can you let those not thinking logically have their rant before you bring such a considered approach to the thread

Why would we come out in the media and lay down our cards for getting players. Its doesnt make any sense. Trade period hasnt even started yet.

In saying that if we dont get anymore players (for wing etc) then JM is an [censored].

If he vame out and said "We have identified someone with outside speed as being the missing piece to our puzzle. We missed Smith so we are desperate to target someone else", Demonland would be screaming that Mahoney is too transparent, that we'd lost our bargaining power and that he was a terrible negotiator.

While it is tempting to think we can use lowly picks in (for Preuss, OMac, ANB, TMac if they all happen) to go up the draft order; it is easier said than done this year.

There is a clear top 5/6 draftees (recruiters believe there is now a clear group of five players – Logan McDonald, Riley Thilthorpe, Elijah Hollands, Denver Grainger-Barras and Will Phillips draft-s-fantastic-five-shaping-trade-calls) who are unattached to any club.  So clubs with those top 5/6 picks are very reluctant to let them go.  After that picks are a lottery and picks slide dramatically due to all the compromised picks.  Note:  Jamarra Ugle-Hagan tipped to go #1 is tied to bulldgos.

tbh I think there is more chance of us re-contracting Bedord, Jordan and Lockhart as there is using trade in picks to get new players.  So I expect the trade period to be around the fringes than 'big' or 'medium' fish.  And we may not have many list spots available come the end of trade period.

So the club could be keeping its powder dry until draft night and if someone they like slides make draft night pick swaps to get him.

Damned if you do and don't in a position of mouthpiece eh.

Not once under Mahoney's tenure, (with perhaps Langdon last year as an exception) was it telegraphed what players we were bringing in.

Matter of fact, not sure how this article/interview came about (mandated monthly fluff piece??), but if he had to give something, he gave that.. Josh has more straight bat's than a willow factory when it comes to conjecture.

I think they were keen on Isaac Smith because they knew they wouldn't have to give up anything to get him with him being an unrestricted free agent. What I don't understand is why we wouldn't be keen on Phillips to fill that position when he's not going to cost much at all or just a swap for Tmac, and he is 8 years younger than Smith.

They might have asked about Phillips, been told the only way we get him is of we pay full salary and we don't want to pay him the reported $600k he is due. I'm sure we've asked about a lot of guys, but won't destroy future plans (signing Oliver, trac etc.) just to keep a few on here happy

Suggest there is two things always in play:  strategic list improvement and opportunistic list improvement.  Brown was opportunistic and we swooped, Smith was strategic, but we got beaten.  Would think we are looking for a small forward and outside midfielder/winger as strategic needs, but we will only take them if they improve our list (compared to what we have) and don’t destroy the salary cap.  If they think Oscar will be better than Phillips at 1/2 the price, then we don't need to act.  If someone is available cheap, then we have a go like we did with Brown.

I like the idea of moving up if we can, but am more and more happy with the Kozzie pick last year.

Mahoney may simply be waiting for opportunities to present themselves (even a Treloar) rather than trying to pick off a player (like the druggies are with Dunkley).

Of those 4 mentioned, only Baker is an actual wingman in my opinion, and he is still very speculative at this stage.

We shouldn't bring in list cloggers for the sake of it, but surely there are some options available. And we should also be targeting run in the draft as well.

To summarise:

We’ll back in a number of our players:

“We’ll back in a number of players we have on our list currently, and give more opportunities to the likes of Oskar Baker, James Harmes, Jayden Hunt and Adam Tomlinson who can all play a similar type of role”

But consider opportunities should they present themselves -

“Like every Trade/Draft Period, we are looking to improve our list, we are looking at completing some trades during this period, but you never quite know how active you will be until Trade Period starts. There are going to be a lot of scenarios thrown up on the whiteboard, and as we do every Trade Period, we’ll try to walk out at the end knowing our list is stronger and that we’ve given ourselves a good opportunity to be better as a team again next year”

I think he’s just joshing. He's given himself plenty of latitude to chase any targets that emerge without sign posting our intentions to other clubs.

He does have a record of playing a very straight bat. And almost always, we have something on the go in the background.

There is absolutely no chance we'd move on as many players as we have, and offer up as many mature players as we have, if we didn't have some things in the works.

That makes sense.  Something must be happening.

We are possibly losing all of T Mac, O Mac, Jetta, Hannan and Preuss and all we have coming in so far is B Brown.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
