Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Farewell Sam Weideman

If T Mac's still in our planned best 22 for 2023 and they anticipate JVR will be ready to play AFL, the club really needs to strongly encourage Weid to actively look for a new club next year, even if we only get a ham sandwich for him.

He's good enough to play 22 games for a club lacking key forward options (eg - Pies, North, Essendon). Sam should prioritise  playing a regular game over the hope of winning a flag at this point in time.

Great BBP you have in your post disregarded the 2 major reasons why Weid won't be looking for a new Club in 2023.

1. He is contracted till the end of that year and in end of season 2021 he  made the very conscious decision and after much deliberation to stay with Narrm.

2. Also at this stage the Club values his presence as either in AFL or as much needed forward KP depth irrespective of Tmac, BBB, JVR, Fritta, and the resting rucks. Unless it was interested in a trade Weid is safe for another season, as I also believe little by little he is improving in most of his game skills.

And if either Jackson or Gawn miss game, who rucks? Daw?

Weid is depth, he'd be being paid as such, no reason to force him out the door given it won't give us much cap space and we can't use 'Ham Sandwich' as a backup ruck or key forward depth.

When we were rubbish there was always talk of our better players leaving to go find success and now we are good (great) there is talk of players leaving to just get regular games.

I really want Weideman to be better, his chance was the decline of McDonald but he’s now a lock again after being dropped.

Only injuries to key forwards or our rucks will see him likely to get a game which is a shame because when he clicks (that strong mark and goal late in the Essendon game) he looks unstoppable.

Unlike Sam and other posters I've never been called "big sexy". Which, in all the circumstances, isn't that surprising.

TMAC will inevitably slow after 2023 and Sam will have a great opportunity to come through with a fantastic young group. He is smart for re-signing with us. It’s not just about the group we have now, but the group we will have 2-3 years down the track. Weideman is 24. That is still young. He can bide his time in the VFL, and shall an opportunity present - he will be capable of stepping in. Worse case for him, he bides his time, and comes through with the next group of players in a couple years time.

Technically 24, but 25 in just a month, and 26 end of season next year when he's OOC and the club has to make a call on him. I don't think he has time on his side for comingg through with the next group of players if next year isn't the one where he steps up and solidifies a spot in the best 22.

Our list manager next year is going to be weighing up whether a 26 year old key forward that hasn't broken into the side, is worth the cap space, given there are alternative options like targeting a free agent or trading for a full forward in the 2023 trade period.  Re-signing Weid and hoping he will be good enough to be in the team is the kind of leap of faith that could see us (in 2024) with a broken forward line connection, unable to capitalise on all of the inside 50's again like in 2019-2020, that would have us back in the middle tier pack.

We'll see what happens anyway, I could be wrong and of course, hope he proves me wrong.

He's an injury to TMac, Brown, Jackson or Gawn away from moving back into the seniors. He re-signed last year knowing that was going to be his lot. Why, now, would he change his mind?

At any rate, unless he gives up on us and wants out, there is no way in hell I'd be pushing him out for a so-called "ham sandwich".

We wouldn’t have a broken forward line connection. Weideman currently plays alongside JVR and they work well. He also works well playing alongside Brown in the VFL. He knows those around him. Bringing in someone else, they’d have to learn that. If we sign him on at the end of next year, and providing he isn’t getting a regular game, he’d be on a low wage. I like Sam as a player, and I believe he will get better as he matures. We pretty much lose nothing keeping him. If we do lose Jackson in the next year or so, Weideman is also a handy chop out for the ruck - if need be. Bloke is versatile. I still believe he will be a player for us.

Maybe, after another season of being in and out of the side, and for arguments sake, is not seen after round 18, I would say it's a possibility that he changes his mindset and  would look for another club where it's almost certain he'll be playing 20-22 games a season.

The guy's in his 7th season of footy and clearly has enough talent to be a staple in a club's forward line, rather than playing VFL 2 in every 3 games.

I'd rather keep him, but also don't want to stand in his way if a better opportunity arises for him next year, on the assumption that T Mac ends the year in strong form.

We are all living In optimism that the Weid will take the anger and intensity pills and take his opportunity.  He has all the tools. His height and athleticism and goalkicking are key assets. But his marking (sure handling) and intensity need to lift on a consistent basis. Hopefully today he can show us something that rewards the Dees faith in him.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
