Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Another theory I have regarding his form is what is being asked of him? Is he being asked to play like TMac or Brown? Is he being given different sets of instructions? Are the coaches trying to simplify it to “affect X amount of contests and aim for a getting 2-3 looks at goals for one a game”. Maybe I’m grasping at straws but I just wonder if there’s a way we can get through to him that we aren’t trying.

Part of being a “big boy” is setting your own standards - Weid should be telling himself min 1 goal per qtr and do anything to achieve that - I suspect that’s as simple as it needs to be

but like our back six have a target of no more than 15 points per qtr conceded

He has played some good games as a Key forward which is something we sorely need at present . For that matter LJ is not exactly setting the world on fire at present. It might be time to give him a rest for DAW.

I believe Sam is lack confidence at the moment , perhaps the club and of himself has put too much pressure on himself. I would give him ( at Casey ) a lot more rucking time ( 70 % thereabouts ) and the rest of the time he could play in the forward or back pocket. If after 4 to 6 games does not improve then we say goodbye. Daw with less ruck duties he can play forward. Versatility is the key to success especially when T.Mac will be out for a long time and B.Brown not firing.

Matt Taberner is an interesting comparison. Is 28 and is averaging 2.3 goals this season, much better than any of his previous years.

He also showed glimpses of quality at times and similarly frustrated Freo supports by his lack of consistency.

taberner has always had the talent, theres never been any doubts there. all the frustration from freo fans has been about his availability from injury. he's only played 47 wafl games and you can imagine 35 of those being in his first two years and then about two a year probably on the comeback from injury each time

he's never playing for us. you know how soccer teams have a third choice keeper. usually an old bloke just to help with training that's majak. big body for gawn to throw himself at during the week. he's like a walking speccy bag

Might be harsh but that's the perfect comparison really.

Hopefully gets his chance at some point.

Is this because he practices every week against the trash talking Steven May..?
would kill any player's confidence..?

He's a backup key forward/ruck.

He's played 6 games this year as such, averaging 1.5 goals, 3.2 marks and 1.2 tackles a game.

For reference, our primary key forward Ben Brown averages 1.9 goals, 3.4 marks and 0.5 tackles per game this year.

I mean, I get it's the internet and people like to make outlandish comments, but the overreaction about Weideman is silly.

That is a simple comparison between the Weed and BBB. It really indicates that both are not up to the great - yet experientially reasonable - hopes that the fans and the football department have for each of them.

Sometimes they break-out for some games to the team's benefit, mostly they break-up at the individual (and team) performance levels across the majority of games for which they were chosen, in the roles that we all expected and hoped that they could fulfil.

It truly is time to select two others, preferably young, budding and switched-on forward enthusiasts who see the advantages of leading for the ball, finding space and presenting to the team's advantage at every opportunity. There are several who might fill such a profile. There are others who have been played largely  'out-of-position' so far in their footballing careers at the MFC.

Another chance for Sam this week. They preferred Mitch Brown over Sam in the last fortnight which reflects where Sam was at.  He’s got at least the next month (4 games) to show us what we all desperately want to see. Attack on the contest.  Take the mark.  Or bring it to ground.  Constant movement and demanding the footy.  Good accurate kicking.  Remove the niceness.  Feeling like he belongs.  Tough first up v Andrews or Adams so he’ll need to be agile and lead up to the footy. Hope we see a reflection of the 2018 finals Sam.

Sam played a great game tonight. Many may look at the stats and think he didn't kick enough goals or take enough marks. But his ruck work and taps to advantage were fantastic. He was rarely out marked and often brought the ball to ground. Further, he blocked for team mates to allow them to mark the ball and he checked many leads once he realised others were in a better position to present. He also ran both ways, showing up many times in screen when another player marked the ball.

If you feel he hasn't shown mongrel and desire in the past, he certainly showed that tonight.

shame he didn't nail that set shot

he was gassed at the end but his efforts in the ruck were superb

It would have been a nice exclamation mark for his game tonight. Either way, play like that for the next few weeks and he'll keep his spot.

I remember around 2010/2011, Geelong played Tomahawk more and more in the ruck to get his hands on the pill.

While it’s not a long term solution with us as Dogga and Max have first and relief ruck possies tied up, Weed could very well take up Dogga’s role should he go back to Perth if tonight is a guide.

The best word I’d use to describe him tonight is conviction. When he went for the ball, it seemed like he actually wanted it. His disposal was top notch too.

I thought Weed was ok. Solid team performance, did his role, wasn’t outmarked too much and was serviceable.

Maybe we just have to give this kid a different role other than FF, he has good skills and is good mark and kick, he’ll I even saw him lay tackle.

I thought the same, serviceable and played a role. Happy with that

Gawn/LJ ruck combo with sprinkles of Weid to get him involved imo. 40/40/20 perhaps.

We continue covering our bases for the future.

Sprinkles of Weed is the wrong phraseology to describe the frequency of Weed being used as a ruck.

The correct expression is ‘tokes of’. 😄

He was very good.  And this is his natural position.  He played well in this role when Jackson was out against Hawthorn, but then got dropped when Jackson returned.

Agreed give him some tasks and licence to harm ANY WHERE on the ground.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
