Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Problem is Sam just does not get enough of the ball in the AFL. Seems to enjoy that second ruck and floating game in 2's bit like Jacko's role. And also his accuracy and depth of his kicking  is a bit if a myth at the moment in the AFL.

Benny was a good start and will hit scoreboard  and he needs a good defender ( No 1) on him due to his size and skills.

He was a strong contributor yesterday but he can't clunk em. That's a terminal problem for a KPF.

At the moment he's back-up for Dogga in the supporting ruck role. I think he can play that position quite well so is very good depth for us

Yep, agree with all of that. I think the problem at the moment is the role where he plays his best footy is being done by two better players (Jackson, TMac) at AFL level at the moment.

Not a great deal to say about this thread - we have all hoped (for so long) to see the possibility of Sam playing consistent, good footy, whatever the role he is allocated. He seems to achieve this marque for his game in the Casey team. If that is where he is comfortable, then let him continue in these roles. Depth is a luxury, but a pleasant outcome for the present.

Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”

What to do with Sam?, with such a lovely kick and big frame, I was firmly of the opinion that he was a Full Forward (looks like a duck, walks like a duck etc). On ample exposed form that is not the case, now instead of getting sad about that, and what he can't do, I am hoping the footy department looks at the tools he does have, and goes to work over summer and builds a new role for him. Not that I am saying he is close to Buddy, but remember Buddy has never been good as a high marking FF and had 'iron hands', not too many are worried about that. In many ways SW is an alternate to Tmac and not BBB, and TMac is not going anywhere. Tmac has also clearly struggled as the FF and is much better in the roaming forward role. But depth is important for every position.

Sam has a good attitude, has a heart, lovely kick, can run, can tackle, and currently has a mid range tank. It is worth the effort to retool him for a role up the ground or even defense. I would not be trading him, give up on the FF role, and explore what else he can do, I reckon he would be up for it, and we will have injuries. I still think he has more upside than say Joel Smith due to his size.

Advocating for Weid to be tried in the backline.

Swap J.Smith and Weids at Casey level.

Joel is working well as a back, time to give him some development up the field.

Weids is playing when away from the goals,. His problems seem to be getting the ball in the attacking 50. Can get his hands to the ball, but not clunk them when in the contest. Perfect for a key position backman, if he can punch it. He is also a reasonable field kick.

Need to make something of his skill. Could be the best thing for him and us.

We have many back up tall forwards if injuries hit, including, M.Brown and Majak. Less in the backline, and I wonder if J.Smith is more of a forward or tall winger, we should find out.

I could have just agreed with you as well, makes my post redundant.

He’s no good when the balls on the ground, and can’t apply any pressure. I think we will see him go in the off-season. I wish him well, but we’ve put in the effort and it just hasn’t come together for the young fella. I’d say if we can get a 2nd rounder we’ve done well.

Love it when someone can be polite about a player, even if they don't rate them, thanks. I went and reviewed his highlights from last season because of your comment, and while there is not a lot of footage of ground work, (so you may have something there), his pickup from the ground while running seemed pretty flexible to me, however I have seen him lay some heavy tackles, and think he's braver than Joe Daniher. With what he could do in 2020 and the quality of his kicking (which has stood up over time) I would say one more season. If he was 5cm shorter I would agree with you however.

You mean like those people who complain about how terrible the commentators are but keep listening to them anyway and continue to moan about how bad they are?  :D

Don't agree, he is often following up after he brings the ball to the ground.

I think he is pretty clean as wel,l below the knees, and is often looking for a player to handball or kick to.

Agree - He hits targets with handball more than some of the mids.

  • 10 months later...

I went for a walk Sunday evening, with a staunch Collingwood supporter and his daughter  around our local lake, she thankfully, is a passionate Melbourne supporter.  For context, she is a neurodiverse (new language for autism) 10yo.

One of her 'superpowers' is facts about the Melbourne football club... as we walked around the lake, she passionately responding to my questions with forensic detail. Eg: Listing of Bailey Fritsch's goals and points from Q1 to Q4 in the GF, who else wore his number in the 50's and 60's, what was the score for the match in 2019 Round 3.  and on and on and on.... it's amazing stuff.

We got on to her favourite players, she quite likes Sam Weideman, although she did state she couldn't understand why on earth his nickname is 'Choofa' .... Her Dad and I just glanced at each other... and I gently moved the conversation on to the pure awesomeness of Clarry.... bless her cotton socks. 😇

FWIW even my mate as a Collingwood supporter, would be reluctant to take on Sam...

Its not his 'official' nickname, it's just one kicking around supporters on social media.

The players call him "Big Sexy". (Not kidding)

Interesting. I have a Collingwood mate who would gladly take him. He reckon he needs a full season to get his game going. He also made the point that Collingwood have been playing Mason Cox for 7 years as a key forward, and he couldn’t be much worse.

I really feel for Sam. It just hasn't worked out for him. At 24 years old he should be hitting his stride but a number of things haven't fallen his way. He's played just 54 games in 7 seasons!

Injuries, lack of consistant form and the club recruiting excellent tall forward additions in Brown, Jackson and possibly now JVR possibly have all hindered his ability to improve at the AFL level.

Still baffles me why he signed on with us when there were opportunities elsewhere to really advance his career. But not complaining he remains a great backup for any of the talls we have for the next two seasons where we will be pushing for multiple premierships!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
