Not true, I think he worked himself into a bit of form the past month before getting injured. Taking marks up the ground and kicking 2 or 3 goals a game.

Harry McKay was in that draft and he was fairly soft as a junior. All skill and athletic potential. Curnow was the easy pick IMO, but he had off field misdemeanours and I think they thought he was a bit similar to Hogan.

When it came to Luke Jackson the recruiters saw a tall with incredible athleticism and the right physicality and had to grab him.

I don’t think we’ve drafted enough talls in general. They’re lottery tickets and it’s best to just keep buying them.

Thanks for this DeeSpencer - I’d never really understood why we picked Weid instead of Curnow in that draft. Most of the informed posters seemed to think it’d be Oliver or Parish with our first pick and then Curnow with our second pick.

This could explain why we overlooked Curnow and instead selected Weideman. I hope the Weid makes it, but it’s hard to watch Curnow playing so well.

Look, if having him on the list costs virtually nothing with a low value extension then sure, he’s the depth we always need in that part of the ground.

But if another team offers us anything for him, and we can trade into a player of similar size the I say take the bloody deal and be done with it.

Watching Cumberland last night makes me really keen to see JVR soon, I dare say he’s our answer to this problem right now.

There's no doubt in my mind that part of Weideman's role in this game was to restrict Pearce from getting to contests and taking intercept marks, and he did a good job in that respect.

But for a guy who is clearly low on confidence to be so reluctant to tackle and chase and generally impact the game is just bizarre. The easiest way to get involved in the game is to lay a tackle or make a block that helps a teammate.

I think one of the commentators mentioned it on the weekend that he “scared himself” out of the contest. I don’t know what it is, but he’s just not cut out for it. Some call it confidence, others would say it’s a lack of willingness to throw yourself into a position where you might get hurt… - cut him loose

It does him as much of a disservice as it does us, let him move on with his life in another profession or team.

That is the mystery. And that is why people say he lacks mongrel. 
 

Last week against the Doggies we saw how Sam can thrive with faster ball movement. He is clearly not a pack marker. That’s ok, lots of forwards aren’t. Naughton, Curnow, McKay etc are forwards that would work in our system. 
 

He just doesn’t fit our system and I think he  is aware of that. 
 

We could really benefit from a dedicated forward coach who could teach craft, leading patterns etc that would work with our system.. I think Weid would benefit greatly from this.

Interesting praise in the vfl report on JVR - very competative and rarely gets outmarked ... need some more of that in the AFL

This has been my opinion Since 2019. Some here fall in the trap of squinting trying to see something that isn’t there . We did it with Jack watts. And many have done it wirh this guy. I can’t see it and haven’t been able to for years. He’s a bust. No [censored] in him . Like watts . Great bloke I’m sure.

I was at the game. I know we didn’t have the best seats but I seriously didn’t see Weids having a crack. Maybe it was just our viewing.

I will say that the one thing I criticised about Goodwin’s coaching last year was giving Weids games at the expense of Brown. Brown was really good when he played and Goody would still put Weid in at his expense. I just couldn’t understand it.

Brown hasn’t had the best form lately, but he can still be counted on taking at least one good mark and kick a goal. Weiderman can’t. While Brown is far from his best I’d take Brown over him any day if the week. I just can’t comprehend people saying that Brown’s no better than Weids. Brown is way better and given his recent form that’s saying a hell of a lot

Jack Watts was a far better player than Weid is and I think your comparison is pretty unfair to Jack and incorrect.

Jack played in a worse team and was used all over the forward line, even playing a bit in defence and ending there with Port where he was going very well until injured. He was actually BOG against us playing off the half back line for Port. If we had Jack at Weid's age now, we would be far better off than we are and he would be absolute best 22. Nice mark and brilliant kick for goal and was mobile for his size. Have a look at the running goal winner against the Pies, could you see Weid doing that?

Watts was traded after 2017, a year in which he was dropped from the team. We made the prelim the following year and won a flag 4 years after he was traded. There is no way you could say we would be better off with a 24yo Jack Watts, and that he'd be best 22.

Watts was more skilled than Weid and statistically achieved more, but both suffer from the same trait of lacking competitiveness. Watts was traded for this reason.

BBB is limited with a knee injury and we have no one else ATM, as an experienced and fit key forward.

Jack Watts would be in our team tomorrow night, if he was Weid's age and on our list.

Yes I can say we would be better off ATM, with him. It is my opinion. 

My comments on him were really in answer to a poster who said Weid and Watts were the same and both failures. Watts played 150 games for us in a far worse side. I could see Spargo, Tracc and others passing to Watts, who would kick goals for us and was a better mark and kick than Weid as well. I am not saying he was a champion, but is a better player than Weid and would be handy in this far better Demons side.

He kicked 6 goals against the Crows in his first game with Port.

Yes OD they do.

Weid has played 59 games in 7 years and only kicked more than 13 goals in one year. 

Weid has constantly been bagged by Dees fans throughout his career.

I don't recall that happening to Jack at the same stage. He was an automatic in every week, until 2017, when he still played 16 games, after playing 82 in the previous 4 years.
