Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Do you call Smith a Key Position Defender?

Cool.

Not the point. You already put Smith down as one when you said:

"Enough defenders? Like who? May and Lever are our only locks for taller KP players, and even then Lever isn't suited.

There's word that Oscar is off, and we are hoping that Petty goes forward. And the less we see Smith in the team the better."

Then you said:

"This to me tells me Tomlinson is playing back next year. I think we have a number of back up options for that defensive role, and strongly believe Smith is about 6th on that list."

So either you're putting Smith down in the key defender category, or apparently all of May, Lever, OMac, Petty and Tomlinson are what? Small half backs?

To be fair, you said months ago you'd stop watching if Jones got another game so you probably haven't seen what positions players are in,

Good to hear about petty and sparrow. Bemused by Smith though, what a waste of a list spot, he's a dud.

Hurry up and sign Hunt already. But you know Mahoney will trade him for a token pick.

Smith is a very inexperienced player and he had a fairly poor season.  he has only played 18 games in his career, so this signing is on potential. He has a massive leap, is 6"3' and very agile and quick. Obviously he needs to learn the footy smarts and quickly. but if he got some continuity and confidence I think he could be a player.  Play on a small quick fwd and take intercept marks, similar to Howe.

Before I get shouted down, I am not saying he will be as good as Howe, just trying to think what the MFC would be thinking with him.

I wonder if J Smith has ever played on the wing. As you say quick, agile, can take a mark and apparently has elite endurance. He is an athlete first perhaps he could maximise his strengths running up and down a wing and spend the preseason learning from Langdon.

Great to have the two young SA boys locked away for 2 more years. A full preseason and I am pretty sure Petty has a strong role to play as either a tall forward or back. Sparrow shows good application and endeavour but I am unsure where he will settle in role but he has plenty of room to develop. Smith on a one year deal is a no brainer with shortening list sizes. He is young in games and can hold down multiple roles back and forward. He is certainly much better than an unknown pick 80 as AOB suggested.

With Omac and Spargo out of contract it must be fitting to some on here that a whipping boy is locked away for next years torment.

It is almost a case of, in for a penny, in for a pound with Smith. Surely there is only upside. Great news on Sparrow and Petty. Also happy to have a trimmer TMac back. It would have been painful for him to go just yet. Trim down get fit, lead up,  put the ball near Kozzie Trac and co.

We have seen Smiths best and it is not good enough

Smith has hardly played any football he didn't play under 18's and has been injured alot including last year when he missed the whole season he deserves another chance the 1 year contract is logical. He's a better option than Oscar.

I think Petty should play back next year and with Hore the logical replacement for Hibbo over the next 12 months (look at his intercepting and lockdown stats on the afl website). it makes it illogical to keep either Smith or OMac with Tomlinson obviously staying back there too. thats 5 Key defenders already, plenty for any side + its a tall draft so theres plenty of options for a developing speculative pick. I hope smiths ready to play 22 vfl games next year and has a new career sorted for 2022

Happy with the Sparrow deal hopefully more announcements r coming soon

TMac is washed up idc how heavy he was its not an excuse to not crash packs, lead and just contest. he wasn't close to the 22 by mid-season being lighter isnt going to just change his attack on the footy and his competitiveness. the only thing we can hope is he increases his value for this time next year.

There are many posters on this site wanting wholesale changes, delisting and subsequent new listings.

Smith being one.
personally  I see Smith as a replacement for AVB, hard at it and hard at the opposition with perhaps limited skill.

Given we have 3 delistings. One retired

KK probably gone,  that’s 5 without Jones or Jetta  why would we want to get rid of some of our NQR players that we have invested time and effort into simply to trade or select other clubs rejects. Preuss deserves a senior position in the ruck. So could be traded if he wants ( win win)

we should see if we can gain one or two players from free agents or trades to improve our list plus a couple of youngsters from the draft.
better to improve our list from inside than to cut too deeply and  never really improve.
Remains to be seen what happens in 2020.  A year no one will forget,  like Donald Trump,   no one will forget.

look at port and st kildas rises and tell me what they did. port cleared out all the trash the last two years and aggressively drafted. not satisfied with mediocrity and inconsistent performances. st kilda brought in 1/4 of a side through trade and FA to take them further. we sit mid table and dabble in both and continue to sit mid table.

Goodwin said that we need to be a ruthless club. Re-signing players like Smith, to me, shows that we still don't known how to make decisions that smart clubs make.

Smith ended the season as a liability. Cannot believe he gets 2021.  Obviously he is on low $$$$.

Our new curiosity on Demonland - "who can we play on a wing" ?

Better coaching and some consistent VFL footy could unlock Smith. He’s not nearly as far off making it as people think.

What are the alternatives?

Hibberd in his final year, Hore who’s too short and slow to switch on to talls, Tomlinson who’s too slow for quick guys? Got to give him one last chance to see if he can make it

I can buy into this. Especially as there are unlikely to be large cuts to list sizes. He started late and the lack of vfl has robbed him of development a year after significant injury. Still... last legs.

It’s one year and I doubt it’s big money. Not an issue. He could potentially still be tried up forward so provide some flexibility especially if Oscar is traded.

Not exactly wrist slashing “let’s sign Harmes for 5 years and then play him out of position” type stuff.

Josh Wagner can consider himself very unlucky to get cut from the list before Smith.

I can understand this point but Wagner showed us everything he has.

Through injury, Smith hasn't scratched the surface yet.

I think he'll prove a few here wrong next season if he gets another injury-free pre-season.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
