Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Tom Phillips - Outside Skills and Speed

Hang on a second. You're saying that someone who hits a target 70% of the time is a rubbish kick simply because his technique's funny? Stats simply don't lie.

What is the long term solution then? We have barely anyone with enough run who can actually kick, and there's a bloke staring us in the face who has the leg speed to improve our game, hit targets and kick goals and is being squeezed out of his club.

I'd be taking Phillips over a Polec, who would come at a fraction the cost. Polec clearly has baggage and given our mental fragility how is he in any way the right fit for our club.

Of course stats lie. One look at how they calculate disposal efficiency will tell you that. As an outside player who wins 2/3rds of his touches as uncontested possessions he should have a high DE. All his handballs should hit targets and all he has to do to get an effective kick is either hit a short target or kick long to a 50/50.

Ed Langdon who's not a good kick at all goes at 74% overall. Chris Mayne who plays the wing for the Pies goes at 80%.

Phillips will be a cheap draft pick because the Pies are shredding cap space. But the Pies won't pay any of his contract next year if they are giving him away for nothing and I believe it's not a cheap contract. Polec should also be a fairly cheap pick and the Roos might be willing to pay plenty of his cap space for the next 3 years. Anyway that's just 2 options, both of which have pros and cons.

My first choice would be going after Josh Daicos in an aggressive way because he has the skills and smarts that help a team score and a lot of upside. There's bound to be plenty more across the comp and in the draft.

He is extra soft. Avoids contact like melksham does. He may be able to take this out of his game with good coaching

I see the point your making. My only point would be that all lists have at least a few players like that and its not necessarily a bad thing. As long as they play the outside role well who cares if they are the type to put their body on the line? I couldn't care less if the same person is lacing out Sammy on the lead inside 50 ...

Forget Phillips. Stephenson is the one to go for.

Not sure on what I've seen on Stephenson lately He is devoid of all confidence and doesn't want to go in fir the ball

Phillips has always struck me as a hard worker and bobs up fir a goal now an then.

Maybe Polec warts and all is the go as he is a longer kick and penetrating to the forward  area or A target. Still mid twenties also.

I think this is a real opportunity to help the pies with their cap situation. i'd be offering a deal of Phillips and Miocek in exchange for draft picks and take advantage of their situation.

The problem is if you take Phillips off their hands you free up space for Mihocek.

If you get Mihocek they probably have the space to keep Phillips or at least demand a big price for him.

I don't think Moore's the type to demand top dollar and JDG's price has most likely decreased. Last year they got away with just moving on Aish. I don't think they'd be keen on Mihocek going and still giving away other players

I think we would get him very cheap (do we really want him?).  This is what pie fans think of him on bf (it's brutal!):

  • Dastardly form this evening. Needs some time in the twos.
  • Needs to go back to the twos at Oakleigh Chargers!!!
  • How bad is he playing? It’s amazing in his ability to hit new lows just when you think it’s impossible
  • Do the Cats still want him? I'll take a meatpie and a fridge magnet at this stage...
  • Take the rest of the year off to get over your Hammy mate. We need you back next year fit and firing ( after being traded )
  • This guy has fallen off a steeper cliff then Jaidyn.
  • He's not worth anything, so unsure what we do with him - considering his contract ends at 2021.
  • Might need to see how he goes next year with longer quarters, and more space to roam on the MCG.
  • Reminds me of Jordan Russell. One good season. Then putrid performances from there on.
  • Yea this season is not conducive to Phillips strengths. Smaller grounds, shorter quarters so less opportunity for him to use his endurance to find the footy and more pressure on his disposal which highlights his weaknesses in pace/agility/pinpoint disposal.

Tom Phillips

6th in Pies B&F in 2018

7th in Pies B&F in 2019

Both years was finishing behind some pretty good players in Grundy, Pendlebury, Treloar and Adams.

injuries this year and shorter quarters didn’t help when he played as he has great endurance and often runs out games better than most. Dees actually need players that don’t stop in the last 2-3 minutes of a quarter.

He fits our needs and comes probably at a reasonable price.  All the better if the Filthy Pies don’t rate him. I was going to offer Future 2021 2nd round but they can have pick 63 this year if they like.

** Sorry, butchered quote from@DeeSpencer about going after Daicos **

I agree. For two reasons, first being he would improve the team on the slim chance it happened.

Second is even though I don’t think Daicos is gettable, but going hard at him might raise the contract he signs at Collingwood by 50k or 100k. That puts more pressure on their salary cap and increases the likelihood of someone else shaking loose - whether that’s to Melbourne or not is irrelevant in the end.

Collingwood need something to happen early to free up cap space so they can deal with JDG, Moore and Mihocek. If they will lose one of those three unless they can get Grundy or Pendlebury and the like to start accepting lower re-contracts. Hopefully Melbourne can somehow benefit from that early move Collingwood will be looking for.

Reported on SEN that Collingwood has told Phillips that they are open to trading him.

We must ask the question. Perfect for the left sided wing as a left footer.

24 years of age. Runs all day. I would be prioritising Phillips over Smith.

Get it done Dees.

Right age, left sided winger and had some good years statistically in 2018 and 2019.

Is it salary cap squeeze or is there more to it? Clubs generally don't like to let good players go. Interesting.

100% salary cap.. he is expendable, they want to keep Mihocek.

Phillips represents much better value than Polec. He is a left footer, kicking efficiency is good and has the ability to run plus ability to get the footy. He is cheaper both in terms of $$ and trade pick.

If I was MFC I'd be calling Tom's manager right now to enquire. Why give Smith a contract for 2-3 years or look at Polec when we can get Phillips who's 24. Imagine Langers and Phillips on each side of the wing, i'd be bloody stoked!

I'd be seriously considering all three. We need runners like this on our list. It's absolutely what we've lacked and it's what's transformed an ordinary St Kilda into a finals side.

The St Kilda runners can kick though. Paton, Clark, Billings, Sinclair, Hill, Butler can all hit targets.

The Saints have his brother. Similar player. Elite tank and runs all day. He played 4 games for the year.

We desperately needed a guy like Langdon to add some run, but given our inside mids aren't great kicks either do we really need to keep adding shoddy kickers for short term gain?

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
