Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

So a pick 50 to 60 for a ruckman that will be GWS’, Essendons or Sydney 1st ruck choice?!  Would almost be Richmonds, Fremantles, Carltons & Geelongs 1st ruck!

Don’t forget that a 3rd rounder this year is roughly 10 picks further down the order from normal years.

He’s rated elite (56.4%) for hit out wins across his career and above average (6.6%) for hit outs to advantage. Still only 25yrs old.

I would rate him between picks 25 and 35 for trade value and I hope our team push for this also.

6 years on AFL lists for 18 games. Has struggled to get fit. Has battled with injuries. There's very little evidence that he's ready to be a starting ruckman.

Apart from GWS those other clubs you named have much more reliable options and don't need to desperately gamble on Preuss. There's no way that 2 years of doing stuff all at Melbourne has suddenly increased his value.

We traded Tyson who was going ok at the time for Preuss + Pick 62. I’d think Tyson would of been rated a mid/late 2nd round pick at the time, which is pick 27 to 36 (in a normal year). Not far from what I said Preuss in worth.

6 years behind Goldy & Gawn would be why the 18 games.

We’ll see who’s closer at trade time I guess, but I bet you bottom dollar he ain’t worth Picks 50-60, and he won’t be leaving the dees for that.

I liked Preuss but he was surplus to our needs given that he is a first team ruckman in probably about 5-6 other teams so I wish him nothing but the best of luck (except against us!).

As for the trade, well done Josh. Pick 31 from Preuss is a damn good trade for us, I tip my cap to him. I had a bad feeling we would accept a low 4th round pick for him just to move on to other deals but having Preuss on our list did give us some coverage so he wasn’t without value to us and he was contracted. From Tyson (who did NOTHING) at North to Preuss who held up well when required, to pick 31. Gotta be happy with that.

Most held off having a swing until the deal was invariably done. Preuss was always going to land a second rounder. Two years left on his contract and a commodity like a ruckman (yes, I know, I don't rate them, but clearly other clubs do) and it was always likely he'd be able to fill a #1 ruck spot.

Well done, MFC though. ;)

First up. Well done for getting in early and putting your hand up for not getting this one right.

You and I have had this conversation over the past 2 years and I always felt like someone would pay a 2nd rounder for him.

He will be their number 1 ruck next year and was contracted for 2 more years. It had to be around that pick.

But while I congratulate you for saying you didn't get it right, I also don't think you were wrong either.

He has no tank, can't play forward consistently, gets injured right when you need him and to be quite frank.... is a bit dim. He shouldn't be worth a second round pick... but its worked out due to timing and demand! We done MFC!

I'm still not changing my stance on ruckmen, but I don't recall ever saying we wouldn't get a second rounder for him. This seemed very likely as soon as he requested the trade. Given our leverage in the situation, we needed to get something in the vicinity of a second rounder.

I don't particularly rate Preuss as a player, but he'll be able to fill a need for GWS. We've hopefully now got the currency to land Brown and wriggle ourselves back into the first round of this year's draft.

Just unbelievably bizarre all round.

You'd think the club would want to hold on to that sort of potential if that's what Max genuinely believes.

Max is 29 going into next year.

I genuinely don't understand the club sometimes. The risk of Max getting injured goes up again given his age and we have a 19 year old kid as backup atm. Do we think Tom mac would cut it as a backup?

Preuss could have seen out his contract and Goodwin could have stuck fat and played him in tandem more often. Why hasn't that happened? I mean, he played Tom Mac and Melksham for half a year, both of whom should have been dropped many many times.

Preuss has been developing under Max. Next year was the year to play them together, his value would have gone up and then we sell him to the highest bidder at the end of his contract if need be. It allows Jackson to come in and out of the side and to develop the way a young key position player should be developed. Make him hungry.

So strange.

Agree with this except the timing was wrong for us to hold him.

Press for a pick for Brown was a great opportunity vs the risk that his value wouldn't go up next year.

Also, if we play Preuss we'd risk hindering the development of Jackolson, and also risk disenfranchising him with the go home WA factor looming.

The deal for Brown was always going to be done.

With or without the Preuss pick.

Pruess wanted to play first team football and is 26 himself. Gawn is just talking him up. Pruess could be a decent ruck but he is no star

Sometimes you do things because they’re simply the right thing to do. Max is 29, yes the ending to his career is closer than ever but based off a number of other top ruckmen who have gone into their 30’s he could still be one of the best for 3 years and keep going longer if managed. That would mean we’re holding a bloke at the prime of his career back to play 2nd team footy most weeks. We tried playing Preuss in a 2nd tall role, it didn’t work.

I’m glad we’ve let him go to allow his to be no 1 elsewhere, also assuming the timeframe I just said, Jacko should be just reaching the point where he takes the reigns as Max is finishing up (after captaining us to a premiership of course ?).

I think Max is looking forward to facing his protégée!

Well yes obviously, but it's about opportunity cost, and timing.

This year we were able to get both a mature forward and still keep our second round pick. Wait till next year and we have a mature forward, and a mature ruck in the 2s, but no draftee.

The question was "should we have kept him another year" and without a first round pick, the loss of a 2nd rounder itself may have not been a preferable situation.

We’ve got Brown and Weideman, 2 big forwards who lack mobility. Are you dropping one of them for Preuss?

And why leave Jackson out of the side when he’s absolutely ready to play. He doesn’t need Casey time to be hungry.

Preuss was injured for the first half of the year and has had a number of niggles last year. A second round pick and to cash out of his contract, this was the time. There’s no way his value was going up even if he played 22 games. A pick inside 30 for a 26 year old ruck, come on now?

Clearly the hope was to bring Andrew Phillips in for Tom McDonald. We’ll wait a year for a different Phillips type, they’re always available. In the short term - I have full faith in a Jackson/Tom McDonald tandem holding their own if needed as they did against Goldstein. Geelong just made the grand final with a Stanley/Blicavs combination. Jackson/T Mc, Jackson/Ben Brown, Jackson/Weid. Plenty of ways to cover.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
