Trade Targets

Starting to look like a fiarly significant list turnover. 

Oscar, Hannan, Jetta, Tmac, Preuss, ANB all mentioned as trade options and more, and other guys like Hunt and Jones still in limbo 

I'm not 100% sure what a "fair" trade for Jetta would be but hopefully we can work out a win-win for both sides.

Jetta, hannan, mcdonalds (x2), preuss .. all rumoured to be leaving ... what is going on at melbourne? Are they freeing up cap space for someone?

There is an acknowledgement that the list needs a mini revamp to challenge again. Jetta and T.McDonald are contracted but were out of favour with Goodwin so it makes sense they'd be keen to play elsewhere.
 

Ollie Wines or Clayton Oliver to Blues?

Not Wines. Rumours about Oliver have been strongly denied by his management. The Demons midfielder is unsettled but until he requests a trade I will believe his management that he's going nowhere.

 

Likelihood of Ben brown coming to essendon?

Chance, but still reckon more likely the Dees

Is Narkle from Geelong a cheap option? If he got his body right he could be a very handy player. Shown he's capable both inside and outside through the midfield. If he was a cheap option looking for a fresh start and new medical team then I'd chase him.

Obviously equalisation measures have impacted the competition, but that hasn't made it easier for us any way whatsoever. It's most clearly made it harder.

Yeh we've got a core with a lot of potential, but the last two years is proof of how many ingredients need to be there to have any sort of sustainable success. You make it sound as if it's bound to happen.

Richmond are very well coached and play well as a team, but they have some ordinary personnel.  Far more ordinary than the great teams of the past.

Don't know about that, a lot of players are nominating clubs to go to.  I'm just wondering if we are trying to off load players for Third and fourth round picks with the hope we can on trade picks to clubs that will need points to cover FS/NGA kids and get more inside the top 30 even look for a first round pick.  To me that would be a pretty good strategy, the players we are looking at off loading will be depth players and we may as well be developing the unknown potential of youth rather then keeping these guys on our list.

Yeah we're not getting Jeremy Cameron and Zac Williams.

But if we got Ben Brown and Isaac Smith and they played at anything like their optimum we would be significantly better than 2020.

You have hit the nail on the head, If they play to their optimum, what happens if their 2020 form is what they bring in 2021.  I still think their is something wrong with Brown, North are very keen to move him on, if they thought he could return to his best form they wouldn't be moving him on

It's a risk I agree but as I have posted elsewhere North are in for a major rebuild and Brown is one of their few assers that will deliver a decent pick.  They have other leaders and Brown won't be there when they next contend.  It doesn't mean he's cooked.

Only Hawthorn's list is in worse shape than North's.  Hopefully that encourages Smith to move to greener pastures.

doesn't matter where your list is at if you believe Ben Brown could return to his best you keep him, not push him out the door.

So North should hang on to Ben Brown and finish 15th for the next 3 years rather than 18th and sacrifice the draft pick they'll get for him in the trade, the drop in draft picks they'll experience from finishing marginally higher and the salary cap space they can use to front load their young players with and use in a few years when they are on the up with the rebuild?

They do have other mature players to provide leadership through this period like Cunnington, Ziebell, Goldstein and Tarrant so it's not like what MFC did in our previous failed rebuild.

Yes, they might get a late 20's or 30's pick for Brown, that might even get pushed into the 40s after all the bidding and free agency.  If Brown can get back to his best they are giving away a 60 goal per year forward for a a kid that is rated 35-45th in the draft.  I'm all for getting him as he seems to be on sale, but I really wonder why he is on sale, I think he is faulty goods.  We have a bit of history picking up players that are a little bit faulty.

Jeez it would be tough to watch Jetta play as a maggie, but it does look like he’s on the outer with Rivers showing some flare, Lockhart showing some zip, and Hibberd returning to form. With players fit it would be hard to see him get regular games as much as it pains me to say that. 

I would really like to see us linked to more movement of players coming to us. I am a fan of the idea of getting Brown (medical due diligence pending), I like getting Smith from the Hawks but I hope if it’s 3 years it would be 2 years plus a trigger based on games played. Would prefer Polak though as he would have more longevity. 

As for the word about Oliver, remember that last year Petracca wasn’t exactly ecstatic but he and the club sat down and worked out what both club and player needed to do to make him reach his potential. I suspect something like that needs to take place with Clarry.

Petracca was more around wanting to play more midfield minutes.

More so meaning that if he is unhappy about something (like Petracca was last year) I’d want the club to sit down with him and sort it out. He’s a brilliant young midfielder and I would be over the moon to sign him long term but he has his deficiencies and I would rather him be unhappy about that than anything else.

This is not a one off and history tells us we've been asleep at the wheel for many decades in this area going all the way back to when Bobby Davis stole Doug Wade out from under our nose in the late 60s.

We like to think we are a destination club but we aren't.  Some recent players joining from other clubs (Lever, May, Langdon, Tomlinson) is because we pay 'overs' or were their only option left.  I have a similar sense of the names being mentioned for us this year.

Will wait and see what deals we get done this year and hope that anyone who joins does so because they really want to play for us.

I find it very frustrating that Carlton and Saints are attracting very good players.  They have the same or better 'premiership' window.  One has to wonder what player managers are telling their players about different clubs and where they direct them.

I disagree that we've been unable to attract quality targeted players (May, Langdon being the most recent successful examples). 

To your point though, in recent times we've chosen to keep our cards close to our chests during this period, until the deals are done and we've snared our targets.

Contrary to your view, I find this Grandstanding by Carlton and Saint is reminiscent of North trying to snare Dusty (and others), it smacks of desperation, and is ill-considered given those deal can often fall through...

A bloke I would love the club to have a crack at but is no chance of coming is Zac Bailey. Watched him all year as he was in my SC team, and he is a seriously good player. Quick, tackles well, finds the pill. Also able to play in a lot of different positions.

Yes he was definitely the type we needed and was highly recommended at the 2017 draft. We got Lever for the two 1st rounders in 2017 and 2018 so missed on Bailey in 2017. He is quietly becoming a very good player and his pace is valuable for the Lions. ?

We were keen on him in his draft year, but he rose up the draft board late in the year and we wound up with Spargo instead. I rate him too, right blend of speed, tenacity and skill. Would love to get him across but doubt Lions would let him go for less than a first round pick though unfortunately.
