If we only end up with Smith and draftees its going to be a long season again especially if goody is still in charge which looks like what will happen unfortunately.

Its a sorry state of affairs if we have maxed out our sal cap with a long tail of 'journeymen' players and can't settle on a regular starting 22.

Shows the folly of long-term and/or high cost player contracts who subsequently underperform (TMac, Melksham, and maybe Harmes, Lever and Tomlinson).  Some can still redeem themselves but in the meantime it is a double whammy to list flexibility and sal cap. 

Sub-standard list and contract management.

Which may be enough. I dont know..Ive lost track of where we are as a club tbh. But I have that sinking feeling as I watch the saints and the blues essentially taking the players that seemed a good fit for us and gearing up for a shot at the big one. They've both seemingly shot past us now.

Don't take me too much as gospel, this is just what I've heard. I won't repeat the specific wording used about Polec, but what was passed on to me was that he wasn't really a desirable personality.

Lots of things still up in the air this time of year, there's been media rumours/talk about all of Jones, ANB, OMac, TMac, Jetta and more not being with us next year, so the cap situation could change, especially if there's a surprise trade request none of us saw coming.

My opinion is that we know we need forward help, but there's just not much around in our price range currently. Club rates Petty highly apparently, so it's not the end of the world, but also not ideal.

Both clubs seem to have spent big and still have pots of dough to do so again this year without maxxing out their sal cap.

I fear we throw around the big dollars to get/keep people at the club not just players but it has also been reported we paid big, big money to Richardson and to Burgess, altho the latter has paid his way.  Buying signatures is not sustainable.

On face value it really seems like Carlton are streamlining themselves into an Essendon like scenario. Undeveloped youngsters are going to languish on the sidelines behind these new big name, big money recruits. Maybe they start challenging for genuine finals chances over the next few years but fall short and big money players end up restless. Either way they're going to max out their cap without a doubt, despite all this talk of saving up over the last few years by front ending contracts, and may end up like we have now with seemingly nowhere to go.

Thanks for clarification.  Still the words '...in our price range...' worry me.  It points to poor sal cap management.  I would have thought we would move heaven and earth to get forward help and trade out an asset if we needed to. 

I think Petty will be great and its good the club think highly of him.  But he had one good game as a fwd when he kicked 3 and no defender paid him any attention.  To me it smacks of the same blind faith we put in TMac on the back of 10-15 good games as a fwd.

Lord we know how important a forward is to us given our goals this yr and last so we SHOULD MAKE ROOM for a forward imo.

Time will tell.

I think we're in strife if we're prioritising Petty (a promising player who has played less than 20 games and missed all of this season) as a centrepiece to our fwd structure, over proven key forwards who can help propel us back up now when we can still get the most out of the list we've built. As much as I hope the kid comes on and plays well and becomes a great key forward, by the time that happens im afraid we will have lost other key players in that period so its all for naught really. Really looks like the gamble on TMAC has fallen flat and bitten us in the A big time.

Just some personal commentary on Petty,

I wouldn't trade unless we could get our hands on Merrett type.

Petty is only 20 and can fill a hole down back or up forward. Im interested in how they think they'll use him.

Jist on forwards as well a combo of T Mac/Petty/Weed/Jackson isn't that shabby for next year.

Id be keen on getting more role playing pressure forwards to support them

To me it's more that there's just not many options for us this year in all the circumstances and Petty will give some more depth to our key forward stocks next year. No one is thinking he'll be a star, just that they rate his work ethic, footy nous and talent as being able to be a consistent solid performer. Burgess in particular really likes Petty.

Yep agree with all of that. No doubt an important piece if we're signing him up for a further 2 years. Hearing that TMAC's body was in a sense out of shape and too big this year for the style of game he was playing in 2018 gives me some hope that he'll return to some form next year, but realistically I feel its too big of a risk of the club to publicly state we need another forward, only to miss out on one and back in what they've already said is inadequate.

Reading between the lines the club is sending a subtle message IMO. The fanfare around contracts for Fritta, Petty, Smith & Sparrow then the big contract for Viney and a new assistant coach leads me to think we are holding off on committing to anyone else at the moment and have settled on the core list.

Unlike North who jettisoned 11 players and selling off their oldies we have signed up the essentials and may well have more to be released. It is all well and good to clear the deck but you need to have equal or better replacements to recruit

The deafening silence around the 12 players who have not had contracts renewed for next season is telling. Add that to KK a possible retirement with a year to go on his contract. We have 5 draft picks 23, 47, 62, 63, 83 most are late but can be used to promote rookies to the main list. As it stands 3 delisted and 12 in limbo. Part of the delay is waiting the AFL's final number for list sizes and suggestions Oscar and Nibbler are trade bait.

Bottom line the club have declared who is essential. Limited options to recruit ie Smith ?? and plenty with their future in the air.

how many times every trade period does a deal "collapse" do clubs say they are way off before it happens

would absolutely not be ruling out polec yet. these things take time to satisfy all but if clubs WANT it done then it happens (bar very few)

ultimately if u look at our current list there is no way about 15 of those players are going to play in a premiership for us. yet we give them so many chances to prove themselves instead of just admitting they wont do and giving an alternative a chance on the list even only for a year

Smith may be a long shot. Wouldn't be surprised of its either Geelong or Collingwood he ends up.

It's hard not to be worried that it seems like theyre backing in what they already have on the list with all these resignings. However, dumping some of those players will no doubt free up a bit of $$ under the cap to work towards landing some key pieces this off season. The fact that KK hasnt retired by this point leaves me to believe he/the club may be hopeful of him returning to play. No doubt the further list cuts will be made once the clubs have an idea of the soft cap reduction for the upcoming season. I don't think we'll be hearing much in terms of legitimate trade talk until that point and we can know for certain who is in the realms of affordability and who isnt. I would genuinely hope that those higher up at the club (especially Pert etc.) wouldn't be sitting around saying the list we have is acceptable and would be pushing hard to drive further off season change on the trade table.

God its annoying and bloody frustrating we are YET AGAIN talking about trades and coaches at the end of the season rather than about our finals performances or who we are playing this week in the finals.

I thought we were past this as a club but obviously not.
