TMac on the Trade Table?

We've probably done the form, physical limitations and injury discussions here a fair bit, but wonder if TMac will see the writing on the wall and look for more opportunity elsewhere?

Signed until the end of 2022; but hard to know the remuneration situation given he re-signed only 6 games into his stellar 2018 season.

Turns 28 soon so might not want to be having to compete with young players for a spot, and plenty of teams would be willing to take a punt on him IMO.

Main obstacle could be him passing a physical pending how serious a toll his injuries have taken.

Reckon it's a bit of a 'watch this space' with TMac.

I mean both Brayshaw and Harmes had career best years under Goodwin, probably Melksham too.

Brayshaw & Harmes are victims of playing under Viney.

Melksham is anyones guess, with T Mac & Jetta just physically cooked.

yeah it's an enigma as brayshaw and Harmes also played with viney in 2018.  tmac should be in his prime at 27 but sadly not.

Also joins a long list of MFC players who have gone backwards through their peak years. Do they get happy with themsleves, stop doing the work, then fall behind the pack? That would certainly fit in with the general culture of the club.

I recall he had surgery post 2018 season, got injured again during 2019. He's hardly been able to jump off the ground since. You armchair critics are quite harsh sometimes. Do you think he's deliberately ruining his reputation? Your assessment, Rufus, indicates you may have never played the game. Am I right?

So he's crap for a reason?  whatever the reason, injury or otherwise, he is now a very average player. that's not harsh, it's a reality.

What about those who have improved?

Steven May has easily been in career best form.

Trac has been in career best form.

Sam Weideman has continued to improve.

Ed Langdon has arrived and continued to improve and be an instrumental part of the side.

Our three picks this year have all come into the side to play senior footy, and all three have looked very good.

Michael Hibberd has also had a terrific year.

I mean, sure, some have had off years, but there are plenty of other examples of improvement.

Sadly I think his form can no longer be called a ‘slump‘ and he has clearly entered the twilight. Like Nev. At least Nev still puts his body on the line... TMac barely giving a yelp.

I think we need to know the reason for his form slump. to me Tommy at his best is quite mobile, and he hasn't had that this year, perhaps he's carrying too much weight, perhaps he's carrying an injury. 

the second component to this is his confidence is pretty shot, to be honest one of my real areas of concern with Goodwin is i think he manages players confidence really poorly, doesn't back guys in for lock enough, chops and changes too much. 

I thought Tommy wasn't playing as well as he'd have liked in his last stint but i felt personally like it wasn't too far away. he did seem to be getting to okay spots, getting his hands on the ball, just not quite clunking them.

They sound like excuses, which ironically also fit in pefectly with the culture of the club.

I'm not comparing Tom McDonald to me, I'm comparing his performances to senior players in similar age brackets from other clubs, which i would have thought is fair to do for a highly paid athlete. We should be getting a baseline performance that is at the least competitive and can contribute positively to the team.

Unfortunately, I find it hard to think of many MFC players over the last 15 years, outside of Nathan Jones, whose performances saw a general upward trend through their peak ages. No idea exactly what the root cause is but if it doesn't change we are going nowhere.

Its not in his DNA. There's a few of them lurking on here who just programmed that way.

Some just feast and crave on negativity.  Its no coincidence once again our mate 'O' has gone into hiding this week.

Frittas kicking has gone out the window but has been fairly solid otherwise.

If we can do a deal we we can reduce some of his (tmac)cost we should take it.

Best for player (he has served the club with honors most of the time) and the club.

Im pretty sure the poor blokes injured in some way.

In his present form it seems he wpuld have trouble getting a game. Not a great way for such a past very good player to finish his time at the club.

I wouldn't say Steven May is in career best form. We coughed up a very high draft pick for a known gun of the competition.

Weideman hasn't improved. In fact he hasn't played 1 game that has come close to matching his 24, 3 goal game against Geelong in the 2018 finals.

Petracca has improved this year but the question has got to be asked why it took Goodwin 6 years to get him fit enough to play midfield. 

Hibberd has been a previous All-australian. He has been good this year without being great. 

Not even sure why you are mentioning the 3 draft picks. They are chosen by Jason Taylor and the jury is well and truly out on Pickett whose lack of composure has been stark. The proof will lie in 5 years time as to whether they become good afl players.

So out of the 44 players on the list maybe 2 or 3 players have improved under Goodwin. The rest have stayed the same or got worse. He needs to go. And we need less suppporters that are content with mediocrity or scraping into the finals. 

Have people forgotten that we were aiming for top 4? I accept nothing less.

You lost me straight away with that comment. May is right now one of the best full backs in the game. His record for this year speaks for himself.

Yes, May is in career best form.  

Yes, Weideman is in career best form because he has been consistent.  This is easily the most games in a row he has played.  I'd rather this than one good game against Geelong.

Yes, Petracca is in career best form and he has slowly continued to develop over those last six years.

And of course I bring up the draft picks.  They have clearly been nurtured and developed since arriving to the point where they can contribute, and contribute well, in our senior side.

And by the way, I have no idea why you go off on your rants all the time.  The rest of your post has nothing to do with the point you were trying to make - you claimed a few players had not improved or gone backwards, and I showed you the other side of the coin.  It doesn't mean I accept mediocrity or whatever you are peddling.

Now, go back to bringing Clayton Oliver up in every thread.  At least, at that, you were ever so slightly interesting.

He is now about to turn 28. He has certainly deteriorated in form and it might be time to offer him up in a trade. He might represent some value for a club looking at depth in a key position back or forward. Unfortunately his $$$ ask might scare some clubs away.  What would we get? Not much I’d imagine.

A late second , early third rounder i’d think ( at best) and we’d agree to cover a fair chunk of his salary too i imagine. BUT it’s posssible that is still worth it if the club thinks he’s not going to get better. Or if he IS genuinely cooked injury wise then come to an arrangement w his salary and retire him. Perhaps keep him on in some coaching capacity to offset that as when he could run he was a fitness beast.

Sad but i can't see any club being interested with his form over last 2 years.  On 700-800K roughly a year, we would have to pay half of it and i still think there would be no takers. He has fallen so far in quick time.  Hope by miracle he rediscovers some of his best footy, just seems really unlikely now :(
