Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Club is shielding Goodwin and protecting its digital footprint here. Minimising direct commentary on its branded posts.

Jungle drums.

Thanks Praha, I read this last night and thought what a great observation.

Circa 12 hours later and still nothing on FB or Twitter feeds. Interesting.

Does anyone remember Tom Hawkins back injury at a guess 5 or so years ago, couldn't jump, bend down or move. This is what I think TMAC has got, I could be wrong but considering he's one of the fittest going around, doesn't make sense. Unless he's had a barney with the coach?

I loved seeing May, Lever and Rivers express their emotions they have they did, especially May and Rivers they both were extremely upset, these are players that are emotional great need to see more of that and invested in the performance for the club they play for.  That was 3 players that knew what this outcome meant to the club, I wonder how many more felt the same way.

Totally agree!  By the spirit of performance i would say 8-10 of them would be totally gutted.  Another 6 really disappointed.  The last 6-8 players are probably glad the season is over and they can start planning their end of season trips.  Generally i think we fluff over the losses and give way too much credit when they win. These blokes are generally too easily satisfied and they rarely seem to back up a spirited performance with another.  Seeing Goodwin looking smug after each win says a lot.

Apparently he was told to gain 10kg to be able to play full forward and bust packs apart. Big mistake. Now he can’t run!

Cant do much when every second kick or hand pass misses

Exactly.

Half way through the second it was 38% to 70 odd.

The other issue that stat (and the crazy number of uncontested possessions and marks for that matter) throws up is they went at 71% in the wet and that is in large part because of how many free players they had to kick exiting their back half.

Which speaks to our lack of effort and gut running to spread and cover the outlet kick and the next link in the chain. Unforgivable.

It also speaks to the obvious risk of:

  • making so many changes (not just in this game, but over the last 3 games -  a ridiculous 17 in total total)
  • bringing in so many players into the side who had barely played senior game this year, and some none at all
  • making structural changes at this point in the season in a must win game -  preuss in, albeit as basically a forward (in a game they knew was going to be wet and windy), Melksham tagging and VDB forward

Given our model is based on all team zone defence and process everyone knowing and playing their role (and trust in each other they are doing so) is critical. You could see that players were confused sometimes as who was to supposed to be on who and who was to be where.

These sort of wholesale changes are just crazy and an anathema to cohesion and a well drilled side. And they flag to to the team, fan and the opposition that we are all over the shop and lost. Which is absurd given we are close to playing finals. Such strange messaging. I'll bet London to a brick that it was key focus of Longmuire's message to his team - boys this team is rabble.

It was telling that Longmuire said after the game when interviewed on on the couch that coming into the game the message was e  wanted them to to be more aggressive, switch wide and take on corridor, back themselves to take risky kicks on - because we would 'would give them' that opportunity.

Also telling he demanded of his player 'total buy in' and all team effort and was thrilled that there was not a 'single passenger'.

It goes without saying we could not say the same of either of these things. Remind me who had finals on the line?

Something is not right.

Maybe Demons are just average

This is a still of the change rooms after the game from OTC last night which shows May and Lever.

The video version shows Baker sitting a fair way to their left and after a little while gets up and leaves.  No team mate or leader got around him.

When the camera panned further out Rivers was sitting on his own in the corner opposite May and Lever, head in hands looking distraught.  Heartbreaking vision which lasted 30-60 seconds.

Viney walks past in the foreground presumably from the showers where the rest of the team must have been.  Neither May, Lever nor Viney went to Rivers to console him or even talk to him.  Very poor leadership and care for a young team mate who was in the top 5 best on ground.

This is not ok behaviour by our leaders.  It is not ok in standard setting.  It is not ok to leave a kid to sort out what had just happened on his own.

This is reading far too much into a piece of vision that shows maybe 1% of what happened in the rooms post-game.

You simply don't know what had occurred previously nor what occurred after it. For all we know one of the blokes could've sat down and had a chat with Rivers for 15 minutes at some stage. Just because they're not around him in this small sample of vision doesn't mean it didn't happen and it's dangerous to make these kinds of assumptions off such limited footage.

The same when people say Goodwin in the box doesn't do A, B and C when the cameras probably pick up maybe 30 seconds to 1 minute's footage of the coach's box each quarter. You just can't make those assumptions.

By the same token I could probably make a highlights video showing Dean Terlich to be a gun rebounding defender.

It's everyone in the club. I've always said this, we're in this together. We're trying to change shape as a footy club. To do that it takes a whole collective group of people to do that.

This is all you need to hear to know, he knows he is trouble. Deflecting blame onto not just the playing group but the Club. Classic look over there comment to deflect blame. Stop  the garbage talk about changing shape. Learn to speak in clear English language. It is rule 101 in any teaching textbook. You are embaressing yourself and the Club with such jibberish.

I agree, Scoop.

Without context, it's dangerous to infer anything from that video.

If the reality is no one, at all, went to Rivers, that's a problem.

But we cannot know that from the footage that's been shown.

Interested in people's thoughts on this stat (if it hasn't been shared already):

I'm well past excuses, but would love to know how other teams stack up with this.  9 games in 43 days, when generally you would average 9 over 60 or so, is a tough ask.

That “bye” we and Essendon had in round 3 was always going to come back to haunt both of us.

Any coincidence that both clubs have stunk up the joint recently.

And we haven’t had the luxury that North and Bulldogs have had - playing about 15 straight games in Surfers Paradise.

I haven't been able to watch too many games this season due to home schooling in the mornings and then working in the afternoons / evenings, doesn't leave much free time.  Still, I caught this game and well, why did I?

This club has had an issue with a lack of leadership and intensity for a long time, perhaps since Neitz and the 2000 GF crew left?

Jones has held the ship together and I admire everything he has done for the club, but he has never been able to bring the others with him. I thought this is something that Lewis would have brought (taught) from Hawthorn, but he seemed more interested in seeing out his contract.

The lack of intensity and (in conjunction with) leadership is apparent.  The inconsistency is maddening.  Goodwin obviously cannot get these players going.

In more recent years the club seems to have got more caught up in Footy jargon rather than success.  They talk about their brand, connections and learnings - but have little to show for it. The effort is appalling and the results follow.

We deserve the downhill skiers tag. Particular zoning in on Lever, Melksham, Hannan and Fritsch on that point.

There are other points to be made around recruiting, selection and player development, but that's for another post.

I don't know why we don't put in effort every game, but it isn't happening under Goodwin and needs to change.

Coaches should be signed on no more than 2 year contracts. It was completely irresponsible to sign Goodwin up after 1 successful season in 2018.

And Without a ball being bounced in the next season when he contracted till the end of 2019. Those who approved that should follow Goodloss out the door, they wont of course.

Exactly. We have played at 9 different grounds this year, and no more than 2 at any of those grounds. What a joke. Crows, Port and West Coast have only played at 3 grounds the whole season.

If this was a one off performance we cop that, outside a good run in 2018 this side has been extremely poor, our skills have gone backwards.  We would right of 2020 if we had some sort of previous form to pin our hopes onto, we can't pin it on 2018 form as we have been so far away from this over the past 2 years.

I wish I was at the ground so as to get a bigger picture.

So many times when  the ball was kicked long, when the camera zoomed in there were 3 or4 dockers players descending on the ball and we were nowhere to be seen. It looked like we had half the number of blokes. Where were they? Just dont get why we were so slow. Even our tackles were usually broken. When we finall got the bsll it was handpassed to someone next to them. Very strange.

This team. My goodness.

And this stat has some merit.  We certainly can't hide behind it or blame it too much, but how many sides have played 9 games in 43 days in so many different places?  It has to take it's toll to a degree at some point.

This is so spot on. Something is wrong.

The freo boys wanted that win more than us. That was so clear from the start.

So many half hearted attempts at tackles. So many half hearted chases. As you say so little intensity.

For mine only langdon, trac  may, hibbo, viney, fritter, Oliver, max, rivers and maybe lever played with the required intensity.

And of that lot only langdon  fritter and maybe viney played well.

I could pick out any number of players but one stood out for me. Weideman. His effort, other than in marking contests, was simply appalling and not acceptable. Trotted around, didn't tackle, didn't play wirh any intensity.

17 changes in 3 games. Something is wrong.

Seen this too often from Weideman, will never be more than an average player. Needs to be 2nd or third man, not good enough for the number 1 key.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
