Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I said "a bit" :)

I'm annoyed that people higher up than a guy in his first few seasons instructed him to do it and aren't copping it as well.

Totally agree coach instructed but he still a little t**d

Gawn is a bloody marvel and we are so lucky that he plays for us.

Too right. Gawny is a legend, with enough bearing to dismiss physical abuse and personal targeting. He avoided another penalty by not responding to the attacks. The umpires wanted to see him stumble but he outsmarted them. Held his dignity when all around were losing theirs. We won the game. The Crows lost. McHenry and in particular, Walker, disgraced themselves and in the eyes of the footballing public, deserve no respect for their losing efforts. Onyer, Max.

Just saw the FoxSports segment on thetargettig of Gawn. Unbelievable.

Was not shown in the normal coverage so it went under the radar. But those maggots umpiring that game should never umpire again.

Not sure if this is the same as others have shared, but AFL Website has included some footage of Crows targeting Gawn.

https://www.afl.com.au/video/482945/exclusive-vision-crows-disgraceful-attack-on-sore-gawn?videoId=482945&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1596928380001

I'm actually now at the point of hoping they lose every game for the season.  I might have had sympathy for Matthew Nicks up to a point but for a zero-win coach to be putting his time into getting talented players to focus on dog acts behind the ball is just miserable.

Jake Lever must be immensely confident of his decision, there.

Hmm, I wonder, Laird's form has dipped a bit and he is being played a bit away from his defensive rebound role where we would love to have him...  RFA 2021, but Crows might want to clear him before he just walks.

Lol, I just had a look across their list for fun and they are just in so much trouble. Winless with a mature playing group - average of best 22 has been over 25yrs and they've had the older team in a majority of their games.

A team with zero wins that knows things are going to get worse?  Good times.

Why can't the AFL apply a sanction now? The vision is damning and why David King said it shouldn't have been brought up by the coach completely befuddles me. He goes on (rightly) about concussion issues but continuous sniping at a player to cause injury is unremarkable. Goodwin was absolutely right to call it out and should continue to do so.

3. Max, love you more then anything. But geez wouldn't hurt to get some angry pills in you and actually give it back to blokes like McHenry and Walker. I remember watching Braydon Pruess last year play angry in his first game against the swans. I look at Shane Mumford and he too is someone who just doesn't take a backward step and hurts blokes for a living. Time to get angry Max because time and time again this precedent has been set since the port Adelaide game and nothing has been done since.

I agree absolutely Dazzle. Max needs to advise the umpires in the game where it is happening that he will defend himself if they don't.

If he is ignored by the umpires, IMO Max needs to belt the next bloke that hits him illegally off the ball. It doesn't matter if he is reported for it, but he has to stop it.

If he gets any suspension, you threaten to take the AFL to Court, for allowing him to be assaulted each week without protection and then penalizing him by denying him his legal right of self defence.

No one plays football and consents to being assaulted. Everyone has the right of self defence. Just because you are involved in sport doesn't deprive you of that right.

Make it clear if you are assaulted, deliberately off the ball, you will retaliate and then do so.

What is the difference between a player running 50 metres to bump you off the ball in a footy match, ora bloke knocking you to the ground in the street? There is no difference. You are entitled to protect yourself. Actually it's worse on a footy field, because the coward is relying on you not fighting back for fear of being suspended.

How is this type of off the ball assaulting allowed to continue by the AFL? What does it tell young players about stopping star opposition players? Is this the look the AFL wants? If not, do something about it, or the player has to himself.

Mind boggling stuff. The one where McHenry runs 50 meters away from the contested area to charge straight into Max right in front of the non officiating umpire was extraordinary. Max goes to ground not expecting the hit, umpire does nothing. Cornes said the umpire saw it but ignored it. To me it’s a reportable offence and the MRP should have picked it up. Never knew you could just run around cannoning into players off the contest whenever you felt like it.

Add me to the team that wishes Max could defend himself against the constant behind the ball attacks...

But, and there's significant MFCSS at play here, I can just see him throwing a blind elbow to shrug some pest off and splitting their eyebrow right open. Said pest takes minutes to be assisted from the field with blood everywhere. Terrible optics for the AFL who need to set an example, so straight to tribunal.

Yes, and after this clip over the head, Derm and Kingy were very jovial about him ‘wearing one’, after spending half time talking about having to protect the head. How contradictory!

They also had no reaction to the instance when May was bumped heavily in the head while picking up the ball and no free kick was awarded. Apparently that sort of attack on the head is fine with Kingy and Derm. I found the narrative repulsive last night on Fox. There are too many commentators on that channel with a clear hatred of the MFC

There are many Fox haters on here and rightly so. Fox have got such a bent interest in sport in Australia, let alone politics, where commentators are much like their compatriots in the land of the great WHITE cloud who  haven't the guts, let alone the brains to call the Truth out when it needs to be done.

Just another example of infringing against Max, is where he doesn't get a run up at the kick in to take the mark, and the ball is put too close to his fixed position, it is patently obvious that he is going to get  undue and unfair close attention.

We will have situations soon where someone will be coming from behind with the intent of swing arm spoiling , except he's not, and will miss the arms all together and collect the bloke's head, knock him out, concussion , fractured jaw and eye socket damage may follow, similar to the old king hit.

...and they think that swing tackles are dangerous....

I disagree strongly

Max should play the ball. Let his team mates support their Captain. It's actually a disgrace they let that happen to their Capt and best player.

And after those peanuts in the commentary team had a go at VDB for giving the Crow player a push its clearly too much to ask for some consistency. Butu we know they are massive hypocrites in any case..

I love Max but is he playing 'too nice'?  It looks like he just takes it.  Maybe he should get into a scuffle every now and them.  Even if he gives away a free, I feel he needs to get more physical and let the ops know it isn't on.  Or cause a melee, wear a few fines.

The umpires won't protect him so Max and his teammates have to do it.  In the video only once did a player (good on you Jonesy) stand up for Max.  Even JV7 didn't remonstrate when a player ran 100 meters away from the ball to crash into Max.  No-one remonstrated with Lynch or Walker when they hit Max in the upper back and back of the head.

Players in Max's vicinity need to help him to stop 'faux tough guy-has beens' like Walker and first year pipsqueaks like McHenry targetting him.

Max, time to get physical!  Stop them pushing you around.

I don't agree.

Max taking the high road and focusing on football is just what I want.

I don't want our players stooping to the level of the gutless, cowardly, inept Crows. Or any other club who does that.

I want us focusing on football.

If we start focusing on the scum of the football earth, as the Adelaide Crows are fast becoming, we'll lose focus on what we need to be doing: winning.

Raise it with the umpires. Have the club (Goodwin/Mahony/Bartlett, whoever) raise the issue publicly (tick to Goodwin) and privately with the AFL (hope that's been done forcefully). If it happens again, get louder. The more focus we put on it off the field, the less likely an opposition coach or player will be to try it again, IMO.

If anything, I'd have liked some other players getting stuck into McHenry, Walker, Lynch and whoever else was so pathetic as to think that was a reasonable tactic to employ, but always within the boundaries of the game, to avoid giving away free kicks.

But I'm absolutely behind Max taking the high road.

Agree with this entirely.

As I said, scum of the football earth. I hope they go winless and their only talented players desert them.

I also hope that next year, within the boundaries of the game, we make McHenry earn every touch he gets.

That is the very problem Jnr, if a team mate goes in to even up we will get frees against us and maybe reports and suspensions. If Max defends himself it is less likely to be as impacting, as he has a defence in that he is merely defending himself. A legal threat to the AFL will see them back down IMO.

I'm not sure tho that defending yourself has ever been a defence. In fact often the retaliator gets punished.

I like the fact Goodwin has called it out.

The 3 umpires we had were a disgrace. We couldn't see it because the TV coverage didn't show it but the vision in the Cornes segment was damning. And Gawn is unable to play this week, as is the case with Viney who got concussion.

Unfortunately we have them again.

"ADELAIDE coach Matthew Nicks has backed the Crows' move to target Melbourne's Max Gawn off the ball last week, declaring "we actually didn't know Gawn was injured". it-was-never-our-intention-crows-defend-gawn-tactics

If he expects anyone to believe that it adds insult to injury.

and 'confesses' "They'd [Demons] done a lot of blocking off ball for him and freeing him up...so we went in with the mindset of not allowing that 'throwing the first punch' (mentality), becoming a physical side off ball so that we weren't dictated to".

I didn't see much evidence of us blocking off the ball for Max, in fact I felt we didn't do enough to help him.

Crows should be find for deliberately flouting the rules.

David King had a crack at Goodwin last night for going into this at the press conference. Agreed, it's unnecessary. If there is an issue with Gawn's treatment (which while I don't doubt there is), don't have a sook to whoever will listen. If Goodwin had been asked directly about this, maybe fair enough, but the journalist merely asked a question about Max's soreness and his ability to hold-up through last night's game.

You're not going to do the guy any favours having a whinge about it, Simon. If anything, you're inviting more attention. Dumb.

And boy, did he not help things when he uttered the sentence "Yeah look, I think this season we've been ok". Another thing which David King had a less-than-subtle dig at.

disagree. The AFL responds to whatever has 'optics' as they say, we see it time and again. and I assume the approach was done a while ago with no result so why not bring it out.

Pig's [censored] you didnt know Gawn was injured, Nicks. Everyone knew he had scans during the week and might've missed. Players clearly instructed to target him way off the ball.

Wouldn't be a bad thing if Nicks never wins a game and gets the sack.

Agree with many, if the AFL wants to be the law then they do something about it, otherwise we should, better yet tell the opposition it is coming. Goodwin at a media op before game, "We've instructed AVB to run through whoever targets Max."

The thing about Max (and why he is such a champion) he doesn't need to tell people anything, because he is a champion, others will do it for him.

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
