Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The Way Gawn is Umpired

Demonland

Recommended Posts

Goodwin revealed the club has approached the AFL about how the way Gawn is umpired, expressing concern about him being held up when attempting to get to a contest, especially when carrying a shoulder injury into the game.

“It was an unbelievable performance,” Goodwin told reporters post-game.

“To get up for this game, he was sore so it was unbelievable leadership to get himself up for the game in a really important match.

“Max gets a lot of attention, we continually speak to the various powers at be about the attention and he gets clearly targeted just getting to a stoppage.

“Hopefully we’ll start to get some protection (for him) at some stage.”

Lyon said he will be keeping a keen eye on how Gawn is officiated for the remainder of the season, saying it was up to the umpires to ensure all players weren’t impeded while contesting the ball.

“(Goodwin) is saying you’ve got to have the right to at least get to a contest,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“Certainly last night Adelaide went out of their way to make it difficult and little Ned McHenry was leading the charge there and that must be happening more than what we saw last night.

“I don’t mind the physicality of players and sometimes you target a player but as a ruckman you’ve got to at least get to a contest.

David King had a crack at Goodwin last night for going into this at the press conference. Agreed, it's unnecessary. If there is an issue with Gawn's treatment (which while I don't doubt there is), don't have a sook to whoever will listen. If Goodwin had been asked directly about this, maybe fair enough, but the journalist merely asked a question about Max's soreness and his ability to hold-up through last night's game.

You're not going to do the guy any favours having a whinge about it, Simon. If anything, you're inviting more attention. Dumb.

And boy, did he not help things when he uttered the sentence "Yeah look, I think this season we've been ok". Another thing which David King had a less-than-subtle dig at.

Goodwin has simply stated what most of us have observed for a number of years.  No doubt there have been advances made to the relevant authorities over some time and I think the last couple of weeks it has reached new levels.  Port continually held Gawn back in contests (Westhoff repeatedly held onto his arm), Brisbane were blocking his run frequently, Adelaide did sit him on his backside a couple of times and credit to the umpire who picked one of the blocks up and awarded a free, albeit actually behind play and not forward of it.

Aside from that, he puts himself into positions where he does frequently get smashed into.  There was a particularly crude effort last night where he was hit flush in the back of the head - no free, just play on!  David King's old coach would regularly come out with the "just give Wayne a go" call, often around August in the lead up to finals. Pagan was a master of it.  I'm actually pleased Goodwin has found his voice.

I don't see a problem with complaining in public if you have brought it up with the AFL and nothing changes.  It's not just Gawn, but anything Gawn-related. As I and others have mentione elsewhere another standard tactic used to curb Gawn's dominance is to start tackling our mid-field players  before the ball arrives.  Happens all the time and rarely is a free paid.

He is probably just feed up of going to the umpires boss explaining the same thing and not getting anywhere. I can't recall any other ruck being bumped/stopped as what Max is, every around the ground ball up or throw in he has to fight his way to get there, and I'm very happy they finally paid a free kick to him last night, but he could have had dozens. It need to be stamped out and if the only way Goody can get that happen is through a press conference so be it, all other coaches do the same thing.

I liked the way Oliver is holding his arm back now to show he's being held, it only takes 1 or 2 free kicks against for a team to stop doing this.

I will go one further Walker jumped into the pack with no intention of going for the mark and clocked Max in the back of the head with his forearm. Intentional, high contact and forceful but I bet no one will look at it. Max wears a lot. I also noted on more than one occasion May was in Walkers ear after Walker was throwing his weight around. Sadly that is all Tex can do these days as he cannot get near the footy.

Goodies issue is when minions block max's run to the ruck contest as well as being pummelled

Finally we have a coach who is telling it how it is and putting the AFL/ umps on notice that we've had enough.

Very happy to see SG finally letting it rip in public just as Clarkson does pretty much every other press conference.  Especially given we apparantly took it to the AFL behind closed doors earlier but of course, nothing changed.

The club needs a strong voice both on and off the field and a united one.  No more AFL whipping boy.

Keep it up Mr Goodwin ?

Stuff like this is just not on.

Yep, I agree.

What Lynch does here should be called out just as much as what vandenBerg did.

Teams repeatedly go after Max with cheap off the ball shots and I'm glad Goodwin is drawing attention to it publicly.

Charlie Cameron blocked Max's run to get into positions to mark outside 50 from kick-ins multiple time when we played the Lions.  Nothing dirty, but just being an annoying little [censored] standing in his was and basically shepherding without putting his arms out repeatedly.  It was so bloody blatant, I don't know how one of the umpires couldn't have seen it.  It's clear it's become a tactic to reduce Gawn's influence.

Max is a gun and it's to be expected that he will attract attention and that teams put a lot of effort to try and curb his influence, but when it's Max Vs illegal tactics from 18 other players, that's complete BS.

What should also happen is that when one of their's attacks Max, it should be two of ours getting into them and turn it into a melee if we have to and/or maybe we should just nominate a player to shadow Max around as his body guard to clear the path.  If the  umpires aren't looking after Max, it's time our boys stood up a bit more for their warrior skipper.

Yes, and after this clip over the head, Derm and Kingy were very jovial about him ‘wearing one’, after spending half time talking about having to protect the head. How contradictory!

They also had no reaction to the instance when May was bumped heavily in the head while picking up the ball and no free kick was awarded. Apparently that sort of attack on the head is fine with Kingy and Derm. I found the narrative repulsive last night on Fox. There are too many commentators on that channel with a clear hatred of the MFC

It’s interesting looking at the photo gallery from the game on the OS: in all the photos of the centre bounces, you can see how not only Gawn, but Oliver and Petracca are also being held/tackled before they get possession.

Goody has every right to make this public - just like Clarko, Chris Scott and David Teague have done. It’s not about getting an armchair ride, it’s about getting a level playing field. As soon as Max gets some parity at his contest, he will towel them up.

Also, all sides are trying to get into him off the ball, problem is that it’s hard for him to complain, as captain. May or Viney should get i the umps ear about it.

He's only jumping on because it's his old buddy Tex.

The same Kane Cornes said 'don't whinge' when Port last year used the same tactics against the same player. Apparently that was all 'fair' though.

Follow up note. Tex got reported and copped a fine for hitting Max in the back of the head. Peanuts to someone on Walkers salary.

Which is satisfying to know, but where the hell was the free kick from the umpire on the night? It was plain as day to see. I find this most frustrating, when a player is reported, but a free kick is not awarded on the night. Walker is a grub, who can no longer influence games, so tries to flex his muscle off the ball. Weak in my view.

It was so obvious that little Adelaide fella was stopping Gawn getting to contests, surely thus is not allowed?? Bit of push n shove us fine but wtf? 3 umps on the ground.
great to see Goody stick up for Gawn and not lay down like we do usually

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
