Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Pert called one of my family members in response to a polite but critical email his way after either the Geelong or Richmond loss.

He’s certainly engaged with the members, so credit to him in that department.

I really like the sound of that. I've been impressed with our commercial wins this year, particularly off the back of our horrendous 2019. Furphy is a good signature, and to get the gin company 78 Degrees on board, as a fundraiser myself, I know how difficult it is in the current environment.

I also like that he seems to be working quietly but diligently behind the scenes.

Anyway, well done @Jack Russell on getting these sponsors over the line. ;)

good questions, well answered, other than when he said that you don't want to look at one game in isolation

while i agree with mahoney that for the most part we've been competitive in most games this year, it's not one game in isolation that is the issue - we see the same things happening time and time again

the constant inability to convert dominant f50 entries into scores is something that has clearly been a big issue for some time now, which is also something that the club has addressed previously directly to fans and within media circles - it's hardly some big secret that that and our inability to deal with a scintilla of pressure is a constant

his support for goodwin is admirable and obviously necessary, but it just confirms in my mind that he can't be the footy ops boss - or whatever the title is - as goodwin goes into the final two years of his contract in 2021

And well done to Ben for interviewing a fired up Steve May last night . Made for very good viewing and Fox footy showed snippets of it today.

May was great in his interview. He said the sentence I’ve been waiting 2 years to hear...

’We know we’re not going to win the game by kicking long down the line’

Which then begs the question why do they do it so often?

Ben is fantastic and im especially liking his pre game videos. Perhaps the best recruit for the dees at this point in time. Chuck him at FF! Can't do any worse than tmac

Elgit, his pregame videos are absolute mockers - he interviews Stafford about goal kicking and we miss everything against the Lions.  He interviews Plopp about forward structure and it sucks a big one against the Power.  Seems to have the kiss of death!

I agree with the narrative on here.

I have voiced in the past that our media department has been the worst in the AFL by a mile.

Ever since Benny Gibson has jumped on board its given it a whole new dynamic.

So well done to you Benny and the rest of the media team.

Haven't had the chance to watch the Mahoney interview.  Will now.

Honestly the way I feel right now at the end of this year I'd be happy to see what we owe Mahoney, cut him a check and tell him to get out and never come back. Our trades have been average and we have given up too much over time for players like Lever and May. Our coaching staff is not up to standard and we are piddling away more money on a world renowned fitness coach.

It's been too long, time is up.

Mahoney has been at the club for a very long time.  What has he actually achieved as boss of the footy dept?  Headhunt the best footy dept boss going around to shake this joint into winning games.

I think he's a respected, smart operator when it comes to trade time. Posters that say we get bent over, I think are being harsh. He gets deals done and had we got the coaching and fitness side of things right (which is definitely his department mind you), we'd be in a good place.

I think ultimately he's been a good, stable footy boss, but come the end of the year, it's probably time for both parties that he moves on.

Given he did the internal review at the end of the last year, you'd have to say he's tied at the hip with Goodwin's future.

They may well both go at once.

i have no issues with fitness and trading

coaching and recruiting doesn't appear to be working

the bolded bit is why he can't stay on next season, when goodwin will really be being judged

UNLESS the whole season goes to pot and then, as you say, they both should probably go

I have been highly critical of Mahoney for a long time but do recognise his strengths:  Administration, negotiation and media performance.   I believe he is a highly regarded administrator and rightly so.

My observations of the last 10 years, especially the last 5 are that managing football functions and football people are not among his strengths.  If I ever needed more convincing the coaching outcomes (or lack of) of last year's FD review sealed my doubts.

He strengths may one day make him a very good CEO and or very successful in AFL HQ but imv not in the football side of club land.

Correct. Ben Gibson asks the good questions. The ones we ask.

Mahoney is a politician.  He is very eloquent and presents well.

It’s not one offs. 2019 was a disaster.  Our skills are horrible and we need to get it right.

I don't think we can tell what his management of football people is like, can we? And what do you mean by football functions?

Football functions:

  • List management (we have an unbalanced list with many poorly skilled players);
  • fitness and medical (fixed in 2019 review)
  • coaching panel (I've commented far to many times on its deficiencies),
  • game plan/strategy development/endorsement (what can I say),
  • analytics (repaired in 2019 review)
  • player development (many of our players have stagnated or just not developed)
  • player contract management (we have put a lot of players on 4/5 year contracts and it could come back to bite us (TMac, Tomlinson, Harmes, Brayshaw).

He is responsible for hiring the people to head up those functions and ensure their programs are consistent with each other and the overall football strategy, then monitor their achievements.

Football people:

I didn't mean relationships with specific people.

When there are regular reviews of functions they result in continuous improvement of those functions.  That the 2019 review was forced upon him says something broke down in that process.

That suggests to me he hasn't selected the right people for some functions and/or he had/has not adequately managed their performance.

Managing people and their performance is a simple process:  role and KPI definition, delegation, monitoring, correction.  Can't see that overall it has been done well.  Some areas have improved since the review some have not.

It's amazing to think that they crack under pressure in a H&A game, it doesn't augur well if we were to fluke our way into the finals, because the pressure goes up a notch, think back to that West Toast final, our skills and footy IQ went down the toilet that day too.

As a Club, we are not validating recent decisions and selections adequately. We allow these to become longer-term issues and tend to stoke the fires of further complacency rather than throw a bucket of water over the mounting deficiencies. Evaluate immediate performances continuously and enact upon the evidence so gained. Only absolute positivity is acceptable - all else will only fester.

The Football Department has not recovered from that Preliminary Final in 2018

That is interesting and makes sense as all the whispers was that he was looking to get out and MFC happy to let him go but to get through the trade an draft period first.

Can Richardson do the job on his own? Still watch this space on Luke Ball being involved at the club, im still hearing it.

I thought he was going to play a pivotal role in the working group tasked with getting the home base project off the ground. Or was that just BS.

And I didn't know Richardson "replaced" him. I would have preferred Richardson get the a**e. I like the pick trading Mahoney has been doing and wouldn't be surprised if he pulls another rabbit out of the hat tomorrow.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
